Barenboim's got to be the laziest conductor i've ever seen. he barely moves. is he conducting with his eyes? WTF? hey,move a little and earn your salary. i'd like to hear how different the orchestra would sound if he wasn't there. i'd like that gig.
@philpara1 I don't know much about the percussion, or about drums for that matter, but I am almost certain the handkerchief would have been used to convey and effectively beat the quietest Pianissimo possible. As you know, the Bolero begins with a quiet drum beat, which continues throughout, gaining more and more strength and sound as it progresses. The hanky is used to make the drum begin with a softer sound, and I think also for the players hands to rest on at the beginning (?).
@neutralcpu If you like this Bolero I pity you. this Bolero is devoid of sensuality. It is much too fast. Many instruments are too shrill. The tam tam and the cymbals are nowhere to be heard at the end. It is nothing but boring! The orchestra and Baremboim neglects Ravel's intentions which are very precise on the score.
@ledormant that's because you were't there and you are hearing tihs via youtube and through your computer speakers. This is section is already approx. 10 minutes into the piece ,the tempo and the expression had already been building up by this point. Aso, Ravel's expressions had been conveyed appropriately, and to say Barenboim and CSO negelected, is quite a ridiculous comment to make.
@dasteufelhund Baremboin can be very bad at times. So was Toscanini when he conducted the Bolero. Ravel was furious with him because he conducted the Bolero the way he wanted and not the way Ravel wanted. By the way I never make ridiculous comments.
@johnaigi Craig Morris has an incredible sound, but Chris Martin is doing a terrific job as principal. Check out the Haitink Mahler 6. Easily the best recording I've heard, albeit a little slow in the first movement.

Shame on you whom evidentally know nothing of this piece as well as never had the experience of making love to it. You have lost out!

WONDERFUL Please do not split this into 2 parts. Making love is without "seperate," continuous creshendo.sp

@natyt333 @zuzrwolrd was right, the handkerchief is used for dampening the drum. I play percussion and I use handkerchiefs to dampen my snare drum.

Whats the purpose of the handkerchief on the drum< never seen that done before.

Not a very sensual Bolero. The score should be respected.

@ledormant If I want to hear a piece the exact same way, the way composers meant, then Classical music would be dead a long time ago.

a fantastic bolero sorta ruined at the very end(5:02) by what sounds like a kazoo, but is possibly bass bone or an outta control french horn.

@ertatta sounds like a sax to me
jacobflaschen 1 year ago
@ertatta
Yes, I think it sounds like a sax, although how it could have overpowered the entire orchestra by itself I have no clue.

@freshhh1994
Actually, we can hear the tenor saxophone as if he played as soloist !

Yes, that young guy is Ted Atkatz - and yes, clearly he enjoys what he is doing.

The young guy playing the snare drum looks like he is really into this piece.

Whoaaa....what's up with that strange balance on the final lick (@ 5:01) ??
FreddieSausage 2 years ago
Is it a balance issue or just the dissonance in that chord? To me, the recording quality makes it hard to tell.
b286guy 2 years ago
it's just a really dissonant chord
