I do not even understand why Christians see general atheists as enemies. Most atheists are not even anti-religion, they just do not believe in a god, for whatever reason they have. Not a Christian God, not a Deïstic god, not an Hindu god. Some people áre anti-theistic, but there is not a clear causality, other than moral critique on diverse religious texts. But in my experience most reasonable believers are quite happy to hear this critique, for some texts bother them as well ethical-wise.
I have little doubt that many (most) people of faith sinply wear the cloak of religion to justify their pre-conceived opinions, and have little or no interest in living up to the moral exhortations of the founders. They are often cold, inhospitable to the 'out group', and positively cruel and hostile to evil atheists, as they see it. To say that religion is not actively harmful is nonsensical.
I really felt goosebumps when I read your comment. That your family just outcasts you and your mother like that is beyond imagination. Absurd what kind of grip religions have on people. They just become numbminded robots. You say good riddance and I really understand why you are saying that, but we atheists should weep for the individuals who have lost their way in religion and became subject to infectious dogmas and religious terror. I really hope your family will see the "light".
I see you're from Dublin (I did have to google earth Artain for this comment, had no idea where that is!) How's it over there for atheists? I'm Welsh living in Devon, nobody seems to give a toss here. When I see this kind of video I still find it hard to grasp an understanding of what it must be like to be an atheist in America. Scary stuff, one step away from a theocracy. Any who, thanks for putting that up, interesting.
That was rather moving. But aren't some of those numbers a little off? I thought that about 10% of the US population calls themselves unbelievers, not a mere 3%...
