  • poor thing . it made me cry. its horrible how can you do such intense work with out realising that its to much .<3 reast in peace

  • i love how the narrator doesn't even pay attention to the fact that a horse just collasped and keeps talking hahaha poor horse

  • may eight belles rest in peace and enjoy life in heaven with barbaro and the other horses. i will always remember her.

  • the 29 female horse to race... she came second to big brown which was a big deal but the sadly after the race she collapsed due to two shattered ankles in the front end of the horse, it is sad she was a Beloved filly and we were all rooting for her all the way R.I.P Eight Bells :'( we will always remember you

  • Think about it, if you were the only one who realized you were wrong for putting your colt or filly on the track so young, you probably wouldn't stop yourself. Too much money and effort is on the line, and you don't want it to be for nothing. Your horse is at their peak strength, and why would you want to lose everything by following the rules, while everyone else is still cheating?

  • @GoodbyeOswald because its the right thing to do. the selfishness of trainers and owners is why there are so many deaths of show horses and race horses. they're pushed too hard too young all for the sake of money. think of the horse, he has feelings too.

  • @HavvahartKL I know its the right thing to do, trust me. I just wish humans weren't fundamentally greedy beings. I wish more people understood compassion is worth more than money, because money isn't success. I'm speaking more my disgust with humanity than I am trying to make excuses for racehorse owners and trainers.

  • @HavvahartKL oooh okay. i misunderstood. in that case, i agree with you completely. lol sorry!

  • Horse sense is the thing that keeps horses from betting on people. The fact that people would do this to a true athlete is heartbreakng.

  • I just hate humans for their stupitidy.... -_- why are humans such an idiots all off us. why do they make youg fillies and colts race on a pretty bad groud to race on their not ''grown up'' bones??? why??? why cant they wait untill the horses are 5. beacause horses are raced in such a young age they are just doomed to die. -_-

  • I was there when she broke down...

  • Why support racing if someone loves horses?

  • Love you Eight Bells

  • Poor girl, you can see before she falls she is on the wrong lead, and she appears to not like it, and then right before the fall she changes her lead to correct it, thats when she broke her ankles. It kills me. :(

  • HOJE 3 ANOS SEM EIGHT BELLES EU A AMO, REST IN PEACE, : ( anderson do BRASIL

  • @wsnbmbnbb You're an asshole.

  • @MaggieCredits dirty tree hugger

  • @wsnbmbnbb When it's your turn to go, I'm sure pple will get over you sooner than they got over that horse.

  • @wsnbmbnbb hey how bout you stfu no body gives a f"k if its a horse or not it died you should show respect so stfu crack ho

  • why is there a "'Glo' In The Dark Fish" video as a response?

  • Poor baby :( she was too young to race. The minimum age for horses to race should be raised ;( RIP sweet beautiful horse

  • Is it me, or do most racehorses die in action in America? Over here in England, the only falls I have seen are the steeplechasers. I have never seen a flat racer fall

  • @hannahbananaroxsox some of it has to do with the fact that dirt tracks are a lot more popular here, where as I believe turf is more popular in England. Turf is easier on the horses' legs. There are still flat race accidents in England, but like you said, they are much more likely to happen in steeple chasing.

  • @asuperpickle Most of our racecourses are grass. Maybe because it's cheaper. We have a few all weather surfaces dotted around and they're a mixture of sand and rubber and the ground conditions on those don't really vary like the grass surfaces

  • ruffian and eight belles were both amazing!

  • she had steriodes thats why she got 2nd

  • at least she died beating all the colts and almost winning!! RIP! have a wonderful new life in horsey heaven

  • The problem too is the crossbreeding. A lot of people wanted to breed to Native Dancer, Northern, Dancer and Mr. Prospector. If you look in a lot of family trees(pedigrees) a lot of horses on the dams and sires side you will see them.

  • oh god : ( why did he collapse?

  • seriously how do you not know?

  • I just saw the video, but I've never heard of the horse. I'm not american and here in Germany the american races are not being broadcasted on tv. So my only chance to see u.s. thoroughbred horse races is via youtube ;)

Now I know that Eight Bells is not a he but a she. I still don't know why exactly she collapsed, but I heard some rumors about drugs? Is that true?

  • @billabong1939 I know this is late, but to my knowledge, they did not give Eight Belles steroids. She sadly still died, though.

The good news is that Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta are both healthy fillies and seem to have owners that care enough about them to let them rest (Rachel did not race in the Breeders Cup last year.) The bad news is that if either of them gets hurt, it could be devastating CONTINUED

  • @billabong1939 many years ago there was an American horse named Ruffian. She was an incredibly talented horse who died in a match race against the top colt of her year, her legs literally fell apart. Both Rachel and Zenyatta race in a similar style to Ruffian and even bare a passing resemblance to her....and both horses have caught national attention in a way that few others have recently. It would break a lot of hearts.

  • @shadowkitty56 Ruffian had a compound fracture that was in basically the same place as Barbaros. Had it not been a compound frature she very well may have been able to recover. Her legs (plural) did not literally fall apart. Either way she was a great filly.

  • he broke his legs... and hes dead now!

  • it's a she..... the 'filly' who made a heroic effort 'against the colts'

filly is a baby horse 4yrs and under

  • *she* collapsed because she'd broken both of her front ankles sometime during the race, and the poor lil' thing STILL ran her heart out against the colts, and beat all of them before one, before finally collapsing.

    She died on the scene.

  • She, actually

She broke her her suspensory ligaments in both front legs, they hold the hoof up, without them the hooves flop uselessly. It threw her off balence when it happened and she fell.

  • I hope that jockey ate shit when he fell.

  • why? it wasn't gabriel's fault. Eight Belles had a history of clipping her heels as she galloped out, there wasn't anything Gabriel could have done to stop it

  • yes its not picking its feet up, BUT HORSES WEREN'T BORN TO RACE.

  • they were born to RUN, hence racing

  • horses where never fucking born to race at all, like us, we weren't born to race, if someone came along to you and said right, i want you racing every week of your life, you would shit yourself, fucks sake look around you.

  • they dont race every week, horses first instinct in life is to run. My friend has a thoroughbred that's never been on the track in her life and she always races the other horses in her paddock. No one telling her to or anything, thats just who thoroughbreds are

  • still, i have 3 horses, and i don't think they would be happy if i made them race every week, it's just not nice.

  • Eight Belles raced 10 times in a two year career, thats only 1-2 races every month. My horse loves to run and she's never seen a track in her life. She tries to run away with the bit if given half a chance.

  • Horses only races every other week, if that, mostly every 2 weeks, for about 2-5 years (more often less) out of their 20+ year lives. Then they`re retired to stud where they cover mares until they become to senior to do so, and they`re retired (again) to pasture. Mares are covered till they`re too senior and they`re retired to pasture. Geldings are normally used as ponies or retired to pasture.

    I`d actually like being a racehorse.LOL!

  • c b a !

  • Ur gonna have to speak english, the whole, c b a business ain`t gonna make no points to me, as I can`t read it.lol

  • Comment removed

  • see people, shes not picking up her feet, just like Larry Jones said. so everyone who's cussing out Larry Jones needs to shut their mouth.

  • good job 8 belles i have horses nd if they died in a horse race i'd sew

  • i am so proud of that filly! shes gotta be fricken fast to beat all colts except for 1 in the kentucky derby!

    rest in peace sweet heart

  • well im from portugal and i didnt saw that and never knew until peta sent me an email about the subject...thank god i didnt see that because im a animal lover and is hard to describe the feeling everytime i see a thing like this...STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY! is sad that everyday thousands of animals are beeing mistreated everywhere. save animals and PEACE TO THE WORLD!

  • Go to hell, id like to put you in the jungle with 50,00 lions

  • well is 50 000 times better to die like that than living as beeing YOU!!! stop animal cruelty!!! And peace to the world!!!

  • i grew up around horses and you didnt...so shut your bias ignorant mouth you fucking tool, horses live for racing

go back to your PETA cult and you all should drink the koolaid or just hang yourselves....either way the world is a better place

  • It`s ignorant to jump to conclusions like you have, just becouse PETA sent an email. Look into horseracing, I`ve been watching since 2006. I`ve only seen a few breakdowns in 3 years. Barbaro, Pine Island, Eight Belles, and I think 2 or 3 others. I know more do happen though. A lot of the injuries and deaths result from over training and inbreeding. It`s not a cruel sport. I`d suggest studying and reading about the possitive side of horseracing, that way you get both sides. I`ve studied PETA side

  • Comment removed

  • Honestly, I know a heck of a lot about racing, you don`t study horseracing for three years (I`m talking conformation, how training, stalling, feeding, starting gates, how the race works, the medical teems, ponying horses to the gate, rules and regulartions, etc...), and not know what your talking about. And also most tracks do not supply stalls to owners/trainers who send their horses to slaughter. BTW, 2 year olds aren`t babies in the horse world, they`re actually preteen.

  • Also, I do not agree with running horses as two year olds, cause being preteen, their bones are still growing and aren`t fully developed, but then again, some horses develope faster then others. Even so, I won`t be putting my two year olds on the track until they`re 3.

  • Don`t listen to PETA too much, they`ll steer ya into posin naked on billboreds.

But honestly, ur talkin bout cruelty, why don`t you go through PETA`s police records? You`ll find a whole slew of reports of them dumping DEAD animals in public trash bins. They`ll even flippin adopt animals from shelters, just to automatically kill them (that`s murder BTW.). They also want to kill all pitbulls and pit bull type dogs.

  • They should cross throughbreds with other breeds like akhal-tekes(strong,fast and lots of stamina) or hanoverians(agile, strong). Sure they may lose a little speed but a live, healthy, somewhat slower horse is better than a dead one.

  • good idea but come on them stuck up ass wipes wouldnt do that any day they want the prize money they dont care about the horses R.I.P eight bells i really agree with ur pointthough

  • Larry Jones loved that filly, he broke down crying during an interview I watched.

  • Comment removed

  • well, i personally have a horse that i saved from slaughter, what have you been doing for them? PETA supporter? PETA's crap, nobody like's them much

  • Each trainer/owner is different. A lot of them care and wouldn`t slaughter their horses, others will. The Jacksons cared about Barbaro, and Larry Jones cared about Eight Belles, but then again, their`s trainers who could care less. I strongly suggest that you do some research before jumping to conclusions.

  • I agree, I think they should introduce QH, Arabian, or Akhal-Teke blood, but unfortunetly, they`re wanting to keep the breed pure.

  • QHs and Arabians have their own races, and racing style, best to let them stay where they are...

...and A-Ts aren't anywhere near as fast as the aforementioned three. Why would you want to pollute the already seriously-lacking TB lines with that (so far as racing goes, kind of) trash?

  • Oviousely your not a horse person, but I`m going to explain anyway.

Introducing the sturdier horses would make Thoroughbreds sound (sturdy). The TB has softer, thinner bones that have weekend over the course of time through inbreeding and impurities that are passed on for generations. Introducing a sturdy breed would improve soundness and reduce breakdowns, thus reducing the risk of PETA finally winning and closing down horse racing.

And QH are faster than TB over shorter distances.

  • "Oviousely your not a horse person"

Assumption is the mother of all screwups.

I BREED TBs and QHs, genius... and the LAST thing either of them wants is heavier bones. Particularly as seen in the latter, with AQHA now accepting 7/8th TBs as non-Appendix stallions!

  • I know of breeders who aren`t horse people.

I`m not talking about speed brilliant, I`m talking about strudy horses that wouldn`t break down as easily.

  • In your attempts to sound relevant, you're only succeeding in coming off as dimmer and dimmer...

...think about it brainiac: why are today's TBs so delicate? Could it be that, since their demise to warmbloods and ISHs as showjumpers and eventers respectively; that modern breeders have bred solely for SPEED at the intentional sacrifice of bone?

  • You`re coming off VERY stupid. I told you, I`m not talking about speed. I`m talking about sound, but fast horses, slightly slower, but strudy.

I really don`t care how fast they go, I care that the horses are sturdy AND fast. It`d solve a TON of problems and it`d get PETA off our butts.

  • I'm aware of what you said... I as giving you the benefit of the doubt-- so far as realizing that no one in the TB breeding world, would have the slightest concern as to the opinion of the likes of you. Apparently, I was being too generous.

The animals are bred for speed, nothing else, as thats what the market for them demands. No one's going to start polluting bloodlines because some internet yuppy is scared what a hack (not to mention, powerless) organization like PETA is going to think.

  • There are TB breeders who breed for sturdyness and speed.

It`s not my opinion alone, there`s plenty other who think like me.

If people would breed a mare like Zenyatta or Rags To Riches to a sire like Dynaformer of Curlin (I`m just using them as examples) who are all sturdy and fast, instead of an unsturdy horse like Big Brown (who has soft hooves and will cause problems for his offspring) then there wouldn`t be a problem, but unsturdy horses are too engrained as sires

    Just Breed wisely

  • Yeah I watched the derby last year and I nearly cried. No lie D: RIP Eight Belles...

  • I love Horses and miss eightbells and all the other horses that are injured or killed during horse racing.

  • well no, because 8 belles was a girl.

  • omg that iz soo sad what happened to eight belles i hope she is in a better place...R.I.P. eight belles!!

  • Uhhh.......What happened to Eight Belles?

  • She broke her front legs from an unknown cause. Vets who checked her prior to the race said that nothing was wrong.

  • She broke BOTH front legs?!Oh,my God!I just can't believe in it!

  • I really am not. So please dont count yur Chickens before they hatch. And I wouldnt be able to, Cause if I ever saw something Like THIS the picture will never be out of my head. I'm sure you've worked their for awhile. But It's just things like this rae things Just set me off.

  • Well I'm sure Ridingx Im not saying that. But would you like to be forced to do something you dont want to for all your life? And why is everyone thumbs downing anyone who says Horses SHOULDNT Race? you'd have to be insane to think that Horses deserve to live a life they dont want to live.

  • You cant force an animal that is 10 times the size of you to do something it doesnt want to do....get real.

And before you make an ignorant comment about racehorses, why dont you work at a track for a while. Your opinion will change.

  • You can force a 1,000 pound animal to follow you and you can force it to accept that it is NOT the boss of you, but you can't make a horse that has broken both front fetlocks get up.

  • If a horse doesnt wanna do something, you can't make it. A the barn i work at, we got a retired race horse... Prettiest horse ive ever seen; sweet too. Besides the fact that he never wanted to stop running!

  • Let it be said...

    Rest In Peace Belles.

  • just 4 get I said anything. everyone says how they thought she died. idk how so ignore me

  • R.I.P eight bells u will never be forgotten

  • I am speechless and ashamed. Even ashamed at myself for ever loving the butterflies in my stomach and tears in my eyes as I watch them fly. Racing has been done around the world for centuries, many have died. They are so young in body and mind, we use them for our entertainment at every cost to them. We take until they have no more to give and throw them away. We have taught them to trust us, and they do...to the end. God help them all.

  • Do you go on every video of Eight Belles and write the same exact ignorant thing? Get a life!!!

  • I'm sorry are you the You Tube police or something?! It's called the 1 st Amendment... and I'm the ignorant one.. Along with everyone else, I will write whatever I choose as many times as I like. Thanks for caring about my comment so much, apparently you DO have a life that's why you comment on other people's comments.

  • No actually, get you facts straight.

She broke he two front ankles and collasped. The fall didn't cause her death the injures before she fall did

  • hahahahahahhaha

i'm pretty sure a lead change would not be cause for a euthenazation

  • no she didn't midnightrider4708, read the description and you will find out what ACHUALLY happened

  • my cousin got on my account and commented on this, i didnt say that. i kno she broke her ankles. sry!

  • There were so many things that they could have done different. For one she did not really have a shot because of who her sire was. I have a Thoroughbred who is off the track. Her right back ankle got injured and thats what took her off the track. I am very lucky to still have her today.

  • She finished second. How could she not have had a shot?

  • She was a great horse. Had many wins, however her sire was known for having a low bone mass. She had the heart and pace of a true champion but not the strength.

  • oh. i see now. That's what I figured after I posted it. Someone told me that Barbaro had a history like that as well... Don't remember who, though.

  • Well what about Big Brown? Does he go back to your mare's sire? Hes got the hoof problems, which is why if I were into thoroughbreds, I would not breed a mare to him.

  • RIP Eight Belles- amazing horse should of never happened rip babyy

  • Where ever she runs now, it is without pain, always in joy and in the love of the Creator of us all.

    R.I.P sweet girl.

  • k, eight belles was not injected with steriods, first off, GIRL running with 19 boys, second, SHES 3! that race is a mile and a quarter, that takes so much out of a filly, i mean look at rags to riches, you never hear of her any more after the belmont, steroids is not part of this

  • r i p eight belles

  • did anyone notice that all everyone was really talking about was Big Brown? Cuz really that's all I heard! I watched the Race at home but not all of it I got to school my BFF told me Eight Belles collapsed and had to be put down. I almost broke into tears! Those rich fancy people probably cared for big brown and big brown only!Actually, Big Brown could've collapsed and they wouldn't care as long as he WON they're happy! But I know alot of people who felt terrible and sad for Eight Belles.

  • I noticed the same about more talk of Big Brown, but Big Brown's team did acknowledge Eight Belles and people on the track didn't know till after TV. As for NBC, they want to downplay tragedy so that more people will watch subsequent races.

  • here is the answer....STOP RIDING HORSES SOO YOUNG 2 YEAR OLDS ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO ENDURE THE PRESSURE

  • your right about that.

  • that's the problem right there

  • eight belles on steroids???

look at the video description to check out the video or click my profile.

  • you cant once a horse breaks an ankle it has a great amount of pain and goes into shock

  • I am very dissapointed that they had to put her down. I mean the least you can do is try to find a good home for her that would PAY MONEY for her and get wonderful EXPENSIVE babies. I caped those words because that's all horse races are about!~!

  • wow you would only care about money most likely but really they had no choice but to put her down because of her ankles

  • That's not fair to ask of the horse. You're trying to keep a young Thoroughbred calm and steady when it's in so much pain. Both ankles is too much. Believe me, I have a Thoroughbred. He was never on the track, but I have had him for eight years. They won't stand still for long.

  • what are you talking about...

  • It would have made her suffer more to try. there are so many other complications that can come up with a broken, leg like laminitis. It would have caused her more pain in the end if they didn't put her down. In my opinion they did the right thing by putting her down. She was an amazing animal and what happened to her was a terrible accident...

  • Not only that but she probably wouldn't have survived since she needs all four legs all the time-horses can't distribute their weight well enough like that.

  • Jockey's are not the problem, and vets are not the problem. What is really going on is these horses are being bread for speed, not indurance. Look at the Derby winner Big Brown this was only his fourth race. Seabuiscuit in one year ran 12 races! Now horses run 3 or 4 big races and then are bread. Barbaro should have been put down, but was only kept alive to stud. How fair is that to the animal? Owners and breaders need to stop trying to get the fastest horse, and try getting the strongest horse.

  • We are all fighting on the internet which is real mature some people have there opinions others hae different ones but it is sad everytime a animal like Eight belles dies

  • it is sad, but you can expect a horse to live on without pain after breaking both front legs. If a horse did, she would be in pain for the rest of her life. I know how that feels, I lost a horse to a hip injury once and there was no way to fix it without her being in intense and constant pain. Now Epona (goddess of horses) is watching over them. So, don't worry, all horses go to her pastures.

  • Eureka!!!

  • <:O. NO!!!!!!!!!!

  • jockeys dont 'love' horses there all in it for the money. how selfish.

    kalghavkjebvgj

  • how can u say that, that isnt true! look at Edgar Prado, Barbaro's jockey, he adored that horse! He even wrote a book about him. This jockey did nothing wrong

  • Well, then. I'll suppose I'd be the first. -_-

  • what?!

  • I was referring to hahaohmy, my apologies for the confusion.

  • oh ok

  • Until we start accepting how truly valueable life is, nothing will change. I'm sick and tired of all this selfish delusional "o, it's in a better place now" crap.

No. It's dead. D E A D. dead. No more life. Game over. Nothingness.

All for a bunch of gamblers to get their fucking thrill.

    Disgusting

  • **sniff** ;''( poor Belles. i hope that her and Barbaro are in a great green pasture up in heaven.

  • aww :( feel bad for you Eight Belles ur in a better place now tho :(

  • gunny 150......you are the worst person i can remember....to laugh at an animal who just collapsed and was killed minutes later is sick and cruel....you have no life and yur a fag

  • Wow, that really is depressing. Living right near Churchill Downs has always made me want to see the Derby, but I'm not so sure now.

  • Poor horse, they should race fat Americans not Horses.

  • Yeah instead of hurting these awesome animals! :) <3.

  • This is so devastating. First Barbaro and now Eight Belles. I just cant stand racing anymore they push these horses above their limits

  • Feel bad for the owners and trainers. I am sure they are heart broken. A lot goes into getting a horse ready to race, especially at that level.

  • This almost made me cry. Such a horrible thing....

  • This is terrible.

  • I absolutely hate this sport.

The horses that are run in these sports are too young for that kind of work.

How old are most of them? 2, maybe 3 years old. At this age their legs aren't fully developed nor are they able to handle so much strain. Heck, when I got my little Quarter Filly, I was too nervous to ride her any faster than a walk at 2.

Hopefully Eight Belle's death will not be in vain. I hope people will start to see how dangerous this sport is.

  • i 100% agree with you i used to LOVE racing infact my mom and i had a racing filly of our own. But now, after Barbaro and now this beautiful filly my mom have volounteered to try and stop the abuse that is involved in this sport and stop the steroids..and hormones put into these young horses. They should NOT be racing at this age. its horrible.
  • They are broke at only 18 mos or so, and racing at 2 years old. Very sad, isn't it? Growth plates in colts and fillies are prone to injury (ESPECIALLY fractures!) until about 3 or 4 years old.

  • Quarter horses and Thoroughbreds are built differently. I've owned a quarter horse and been around thoroughbreds all my life.

  • I wish people wouldnt push horses to race, they should be left to live a happy peaseful life, niot one that theyre being forced to live.

  • Racehorses are overwhelmingly happy to please, thank you very much....

  • I have been around thoroughbreds all my life and if a horse doesn't like to run it won't. If a horse doesn't want to do something like run a race its almost impossible to force them and if you can get them to leave the starting gate they wont do well in the race.

  • I was really disappointed to see that a horse had to be put to sleep after coming so close to first place, but it was definitely the best thing for her. Horses legs are very fragile and a break like that is like completely shattering ours...not to mention she broke both. I bet it hurt them to have to put her down.

  • yea Ive seen horses go down and ive seen jockeys lose ther lifes (rip)

But once a horse breaks there legs Its a long run and allot of money to see if they even heal properly, Both legs the horse couldnt walk and has more chance or further injurys, i guess it was for the best

  • i dont understand why they have to euthanize the horse after it breaks its legs, maybe im dumb but i dont see the reason why???

  • Well u c a hores has to walk and stand up to survive and it is really hard to fix there legs after it falls and if a hores rolles around on the ground that culd make it pass away to cause there intestance will get all tangled. it is just a wierd thing that happens to them.hopefuly that helps.

  • i knew that cause i lived across the street to a ranch for 14 years but i just think there should be or someone should make an alternative safe way out, i know there isnt one now but hopefull w/ new technology we can think of new ways?

  • there probably could be new ways but think about it, walking on two hinds instead of four.. also that is just too much pain for a horse..

  • yeah i get it

  • yea i see wat ur saying and i agree with you!

it is really sad when they have to euthanize horses! but idk mabey and hopfully overtime they will think of something to help save thier lifes!

  • what happens is, the trainers/owners will sometimes choose to have the horses leg fixed (like Barabaro), but once the horse breaks both legs, then they will put it down.

I can tell you right now that the owners/trainers of Eight Belles would have had her leg fixed because she was such an amazingly fast horse (she was so far ahead of the rest of the horses), but she broke both....

It was extremley devastating. and what JonasLuver247 said.

  • Sadly, Eight Belle had to be destroyed. Both her front ankles were shattered. If it was only one foreleg, perhaps she would have been able to possibly heal enough to live in a pasture being a broodmare, but probably not. See, horses weigh about 1200 lbs, and 2/3 of their weight is carried on the forehand. No cast or ortho surgery could support that great weight, much less heal shattered bones. Trainers break and race horses before their growth plates close; makes the fracture risk much higher

  • i'm ashamed that you are a fellow Redskin fan. I guess you thought it was awesome when LT snapped Joe Theisman's leg.
