I used to skate with Linda at Pickwick Ice Center in Burbank, CA. . We did our school figures together and some people thought she was snobby but she was the most modest person I ever knew. And during public session, she couldn't afford always the ice time, she would skate with regular people and do triple Sachows in the corner. I don't think most people knew the world champion was skating with them.
@mrjking That's nice to hear, but that modesty/shyness was often misundersood as arroange for some reason by the press... By the way, this performance feels SO refreshing.... How buttery smooth.
@npe1 Hmmm. Are you sure you are thinking of 77? I know the ice at Yoyogi in 1985 was absolutely horrendous and it was reportedly a nightmare for the TV crew. but I always thought it was great in 77...
@nondescriptnyc No I mean '77 (I know it was bad in '85 as well) I still have my skating magazines from '77 that are full of comments about the ice. At one point the paint underneath started to seep through the ice.
@npe1 Hi. Sorry about the delayed response...I just got your comment. Could you double check the article? I vaguely remember hearing about this hocky-line-seeping-through problem at a nearby Meiji Jungu Arena, where the compulsories and official practice sessions took place--if I recall correctly... I might be completely mistaken, so please know that I am not "fighting" you. I genuinely want to know what the article says because I can't remember!!!
@nondescriptnyc Yes. The ice was bad in '77 worlds. You are right about the hockey line on the practice ice, the paint seeped through the ice but also the ice was poor all over. They painted the concrete below the ice just before the championships and they didn't let it dry properly, therefore it seeped through ice. Just look at the ice on this video of Linda Fratianne, you can also see it on the videos of Minoru Sanu's great performance at '77 worlds - the ice is a kind of grey/black colour.
I was just noticing that too..the ice is gorgeous,,i always loved it when the ice was "dark"..it was great for 'figures'..it usually came from a type of 'paint' they put in the ice when it was laid...very cool, rarely seen, but one of my favorite skating conditions...

Funny how people say they like the look of the ice. I remember '77 Worlds. There were sooooo many complaints about the ice. Times change I suppose.
