to the camera. There was a better version by Kissin but was deleted some time ago. Try other versions to see the difference there are plenty nowadays. Kissin's just not up to his usual high standards, he has spoiled us. Covering about 8 different emotions in 2 1/2 mins is not easy..
Well, that's a fairly good rendition, extremely maniac and tormenting, as it should be, but alas, his tone is very hard, almost bombastic, destroying the phrases and the music's natural flow... At last, he has surely understand Scriabin's temperament, while on terms of musicality and phrasing, he has a lot of work to do...
Ummm...for those talking about the dynamics of Scriabin's recording need to take a quick history lesson: it was recorded on a PIANO ROLL. In other words it has no dynamics at all when played, it simply replicates the notes played. Meaning that there is no one alive who can legitimately claim to play closest to his intended dynamics, because we few if anyone alive today have actually heard him.
@aggrorulz Really? Well Liszt also used to compose in this direction, when he got old. What a pity that Chopin died so early. Seems that Scriabin and others filled this gap!
Do you think that Chopin would have composed also atonal pieces?
87 people think Vladimir Horowitz wrote this piece. There's a recording of Alexander scriabin himself playing this on ampico. Compare recordings and see who comes close to Scriabins dynamics.
@ChrisWatch I have heard Scriabin's play it. That recording is horrible and has no dynamics, maybe it's the age. Also Scriabin was not conisidered to be that great performing, Rach did nothing but all-Scriabin concerts whle he was in Russia. Kissin's dynamics and phrasing are closest to Horowitz, the acknowledged master. I like Kissin's performance, it's worlds better than Lugansky and others who try to play this.
@ldhmage That's the problem with modern day thinking. You don't care much about the composers music, you care about the hogwash romanticized gooble gobble dribble any self-indulgent can think of. Scriabin was crazy, his technique was in a different world, something you obviously can't relate to. Vladimir Horowitz is a great pianist but he knew how to sell his stuff, what you hear is Horowitz trying to make sure every audience hears the piece. Same with Kissin. But, scriabin played closer.
To my point of view, Kissin is the only one who succed to understand and play the piece correctly, with the good phrasings, dynamics, energy. He makes live the piece like no other pianist have ever done.
For me, this piece can only be played with a strong emotion, like a storm, a hurricane, as if a powerfull fire burn inside of us. An explosion of energy !
I remember the time when i saw Kissin play for the first time at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra... That guy is just incredible and there will absolutely never be someone as good as he is... россия вперед, Женька!!!!
@Tader321 No I think the other guy is right. Sorry dude. If you listen to Horowitz perform this, with him slowly building to a crescendo at the end of the piece rather than blasting off at the start in full forte.
Since 20 years im a musician, and i know whats all about that creepy prodigies...
If you want to put passion in your music, you need life-experience... Such a "kid" its not supposed to play such kind of music, cause of absent lifetime...
Just watch some of Hamelin´s or Horowitz´s peformances and you will appreciate me.
Still amazing how fast Evgeny can play this piece without loosing anything at all. Most newer pianists who attempt this piece loose character of the piece for the speed. Great performance.
Kissin probably understands the piece even better than Horowitz does, because he's russian himself. He goes stronger and weaker through the piece to enchance the feeling. On the other hand Horowitz plays it strong at first and then goes down in different sections. Makes the piece more american/hollywood alike. Like more suited for a movie. It's just taste. I like Horowitz's more in this case. His interpretation is just more appealing to me.
@Ianthe22 horowitz is so savage it's tactical. I love kissin; but it feels so 'color by the numbers' compared to horowitz. Don't get me wrong; it's all there. But there's something lacking in his performance. He get's it at the end though so mayby it has to do with what you're saying :O
@planetamer YEs it is very artificial the performance of Horowitz. But fo me it's what makes it so very likeable liek the background music for a Hollywood movie. But i do agree on that he shreds all the feelings Scriabin put into the piece. On that note Kissin's performance is a lot more original in it's feeling. Although both versions are very different from one another they are both good..
@planetamer i find them both special performances horowitz has a bit more agitato and it seems a little contrived also the ending is a bit scruffy, however it is still brilliant also the pianos are quite different
An amazing artist is one who can satisfy himself, not his audience. For what concern is his that his audience is dissatisfied if he is satisfied. Music is an art, a personal thing. @ZekBlek in order to be russian you must have a russian blood, Kissin has no russian blood for he has jewish blood therefore he is jewish. The fact that I know arabic does not make me arabic. Got that?
yeah, but he wasn't born with it. He probably gets perm done for his hair. His hair is just very curly if you can find a picture of him shortly after a haircut.
I love Kissin, and I think he plays a great Scriabin. Whether it is the best or not is all in the ear of the beholder, haha. One thing I love about this is that Scriabin sort of forces Kissin to put a lot of emotion into his playing. I consider Kissin to be a technical master, focusing on playing fast and perfect and less on emotion. This piece forces him to show emotion, and I rather like it! ; )
I've several times listened and watched this piece played by each of Kissin and Horowitz. Neither performance touches that of Van Cliburn. I find his interpretation the most musical by far - and much less of a bang-fest.
1st time i hear Scriabin.... yes yes i swear. Seems that some notes are lacking, or that the track is jumping like in an old 45 vinyl. Something between delay or advance. Not usual to my ears, but so expressive. Human feelings are so complex. Anyway, the Music is here. I dont knox Mr Kissin, but he plays in a powerful, expressive way too, such a clarity as "robertslistening" said... when the interpret meets the composer?
Very happy for a first time. Some advices for future listenings?
The key word with Kissin...power. I've listened to a lot of speed technicians. I haven't heard anyone play scalewise motion with the power that Kissin can, although I wish he would take it easy on the overall volume at times. His clarity on his recordings is wonderful. I can hear every note so clearly...and speed to go with it.
A wonderful pianist. Definitely in my top 5 in the world. I think he plays Liszt and Rachmaninoff best. Some of his chopin is a little harsh. Still my favorite.

yeah, but he wasn't born with it.

I like this very much. Kissin understands Scriabin, unlike certain individuals that I won't name.
