  • They tried to get Exterminator to participate this race but the 3 owners could not come to a compromise on the conditions of the race and so Exterminator was scratched, but raced that same day on a different track. If anyone out there knows what race that was and where PLEASE respond.

  • No really a match race, is it? Man O'War is cantering and still winning by ten lengths. Its possible the jockey on the other horse gave up.

  • anyone else notice how Man O War's mouth is gaping open at the end because he is UNDER WRAPS?!?!

    wow

  • It is fitting that Secretariat was called "Big Red". For that was the same exact nickname given to Man o' War. Two shining examples of the American Racehorse. Don't discount Sir Barton(sadly a failure at stud)he was a very high class runner (1st to win the US triple crown),he suffered from shelly feet and in this race he was suffering from it. Not to say he would have won,but he would have probably ran better, after all he had beat the great gelding Exterminator before. Only good 1's can do that

  • i love man o war he was such a good horse my dad was a little boy when he was race i wish we got to see he he was soo amazing!

    r.i.p man'o war

  • Anyone interested...you can find the audio of Man o War's funeral under media on the Claiborn farm website.

  • I just visited the National Racing Hall of Fame site and they seem to have old clips of champions...one has to download the Real Player and it's free for 14 days and then $14.00 a month after that...guess that's the only way to view the races and you may have to be a member???

  • Are those people standing on the fence when they come around the last turn? Looks like it to me. But I probably saw it wrong. Cool vid, thanks for uploading.

  • You're right, they are standing on the fence!

    Great historic video.

  • Thank you, someone else noticed that! I just thought it looked so funny and random, lol.

  • süper olmus

  • To me it always seems that the horses are going much faster in older racing clips! Im not really sure it might just be me!

  • They are going much faster; film way back then was far from perfect with speed and sound not yet mastered.

    Take care.

  • This is because the film then was photographed in slower time (fewer frames per minute/second) than normal projectors today (and now for many decades) play. Hence, put 10 frames/sec in a projector running 20 frames/sec, it will speed up the action.

  • @horseyaddicted

Film was slower then, and rarely is it played on the proper slow projector nowadays (this has improved in documentaries very recently). They tend to show it on fast modern projectors, which consequently speeds up the motion. That is why it seems faster - and people walking (frequently shown on old films in doc's) seem very choppy.

  • Man, I wish all the race was released! I know all of it was filmed. I wonder what happened to those other 12 cameras.

  • I couldn't agree more. It would be awesome to see. Take care.

  • Video of MW actually racing are RARE. I've seen this one, which I have a copy of. But many years ago in the late 60's or early 70's I could have sworn whichever channel ABC, NBC, or CBS that carried the Belmont, showed footage of him running in that. I have never seen it again.

  • They simply don't come like that anymore. It's just Rare to see a Horse race a Galliant as that.

  • he'll be dead 60 years this month. long live his history.

  • You know the more I watch this the more incredible it is. Notice how they pass the first time in bullit speed, yet Man O War canters to the finish. Like Secretariat at Belmont....all looked normal until the backstretch....then things got a little weird.

    Totally awesome.

  • Wow, another piece of incredibal history. Man O War,

    the greatest of the greats.

    Keep up the good work

  • The great Man O' War's place on this channel is essential, and it's an honour to have him here. Hopefully, with luck, there will be more footage of him to come.

Thanks for the kind support. Have a great holiday weekend!

  • It's great to see this, my good friend and associate producer. Wonderful!

  • Thanks buddy! Yes, I felt it was time to have the great Man O' War grace my channel. I hope more footage of him is found soon! It needs to be seen, if it exists!

    Thanks for the comment.

  • As the proud owner of the very best channel for vintage racing footage that exists, I agree with you ... it was time for the great Man o'War to make an appearance. Good timing!

  • I wrote that comment, so let me clarify: cf1970 IS the proud owner of the very best channel for vintage racing footage that exists. Forget about finding that on my channel, which consists only of The SECRETARIAT Project.

  • I thank you for your support. Having Man O' War here dresses up the joint, dontcha think? :)

  • I do indeed; it provides a more complete form to your already fantastically resourceful channel. I have to say that your vintage posts of Seabiscuit's Big Cap trials and tribulations are absolutely wonderful.

  • Very kind words. I greatly appreciate them. I have to say, it has been a struggle at times to pick and choose when, where and how I want these fine horses to appear on my channel.

I love doing it, and it's a great honour, but it might be time for a break. I've been planning a holiday for a week or two in September, so you heard it here first. A little R&R would do me a world of good.

  • Indeed, sir.

  • I hope you have a great time cf1970!

Thanks for posting this great video!

    Jazz

  • I want you to know how much I truly appreciate the time you have taken to post the wonderful vintage racing videos! They add much pleasure to my day!

  • Mine too. Your channel is a treasure .... "Borrego!"

  • Borrego?Do you mean where the sunsets linger, the nights are balmy ,and the stars sparkle?I am headed that way as we speak...

  • Nope, but that sure is a nice image! Ask cf to direct you to the race that I mean. It's an incredible display of closing power!

  • cf -if you have time later would you mind directing me to the race?

    Thank you!

    Jazz

  • Sure thing, Jazz. In the search bar, type in "2005 Jockey Club Gold Cup". It's a mind-boggling performance!

Also, for a great battle between 4 horses at the line including Borrego, type in "2005 Pacific Classic".

Both races are awesome to watch. Take care.

  • Will do! Thank you!

I will talk to you guys later cf and gf!

    Jazz

  • gfn: Borrego! HA! That's such a classic Durkin moment. Hard to believe that first post was almost a year ago now. Time flies...

Your friendship and camaraderie this past year has been a blessing for me, I'm a lucky fella to have met such nice people here. Cheers!

  • If it had not been for you sending your first email to me I would never have even heard of Borrego or seen those 2 incredible performances of his that you have, so ... tally ho!

  • Great memories, pal! Glad to have shared it with you first.

  • Me too!

  • Jazz, your kindness and support is very much appreciated, and will not be forgotten.

I'm happy to have provided you with some moments of joy. Your joy is my joy!

    Take care, my friend.

  • Man O' War was amazing. With there was more videos of him

  • I agree, he was quite the horse. Finding more footage of MOW would be terrific and, I believe, help further substantiate his greatness, which up to now has been mostly through word-of-mouth.

I hope someone out there proves me wrong and posts more video of MOW. More...

  • Video evidence of his races must be produced to firm up his spot in the top 5 of all-time. Without it, I rank him #6, as it stands now.

Surprised? Don't be. My list changes with more research.

Thanks for the comment, Carly. Have a good day.

  • Reasonably stated indeed, and full of logic. Don't be all that surprised if you receive a strong response ... most of his supporters consider it sacrilige not to have him at least 2nd. Your position is eminently reasonable to me, though.

  • Thanks. Believe you me, I'm expecting a strong response, and I welcome it.

I think it's high time that some questions were FAIRLY raised about his greatness, instead of the seemingly endless disparaging Secretariat talk that I've been reading. I'm tired of it. I certainly don't doubt MOW was a great horse, I just want to see it with my own eyes. I'm positive others would love to as well.

  • It's courageous of you to welcome that kind of discourse because I also have perused the other "discussions" concerning that topic, and have found it to be quite aggressive and rude. That's why I've stayed out of it for the most part. I've also tried, for the most part, to encourage considerate debate on my channel without all that stuff pervading it.

  • Haha, courageous is a good word for it. I might not know what hit me when MOW fans read my opinion (oh well, can't please everyone), but I think it's a fair and respectful one.

My hope is that people will come here and offer opinion that is honest, fair, and respectable.

I certainly will NOT tolerate rudeness or profanity in the least. I cannot allow that kind of crap to tarnish this channel.

  • You mean horse apples?

  • Haha. Precisely. Bull cookies, prairie oysters and the like.

  • I'd be interested in more terms for "the like", myself.
