Newman's Landing used to be where human toons first spawned on character creation--they would be teleported to Northshire Abbey after a split second.

you can also get there by swimming north from swormwind harbor for those allies out there, and i remember before the goblins, it was mysterious. they should leave places without npc, it adds mystery and rp elements, not everything needs to have a special story behind it, sometimes you need to let your imagination work

Got there once on my Dk (yes i've got a death knight and unlike most others i'm not afraid to admit it, as most anti-dk cursers are) after i got bored and desided to search for "hidden" area's so i left from the Harbor, but ur right, under Sw makes it more fun =P

You don't need to get under Stormwind to reach there, you can simply swim East from the docks.
