I think it's somewhat of a mistake to link the rejection of any new ideas with Capitalism. Look how much anti-capitalist stuff gets published, particularly in the area of music. What are the top selling albums of all time? They each contain strongly anti-Capitalist statements.
It seems to me the philosophers themselves are pretty closed to real alternative ideas today.
@TheBeardedThinker check out- Episode #03 - more Descartes episodes planned but not for a while yet, please subscribe and hang on and we'll get them out! :-)
I haven't watched the others yet, but I'll do it by tomorrow. But the reason I say speed it up, is because I haven't got 5 mintues to waste. 2 min of philosophy is just the best. There's a guy on youtube who does something like that. But this video particularly slow.
@Sesshomaru24U this is a radio play not an education in philsophy though I'm sorry that you consider it a waste, our videos range from 3 minutes to 7 and a half, but I think 5 mins is a reasonable average for a comedy skit, hope you enjoy the other vids if you get a chance to check them out
I didn't consider it a waste. I'm just one of those people who don't like to spend to much time on my lap, I'm kind of fast paced. It was good though. I'll check out the rest now.
@sergijoe there is no truth in anything said by IllichSketchShow, this so-called comedy is degenerate and must be destroyed. Death to The Illch Sketch Show!
@natmanprime ILLICHSKETCHSHOW is the worst thing to have ever been unleashed upon the internet! The sooner it is destroyed the better for all of us I say!
and this revolutionJam guy below is involved i think somehow...hes a fucking idiot AND a patronising cunt when he doesn't have a valid argument to respond with.
Then they tell me what i should/shouldnt say but still not answering my valid questions
@natmanprime I could not agree more, although as a gentleman I would never use the "C" word,
however, this Revolutionaryjam character if he is involved with Illich he too should be destroyed and placed in a cave somewhere with no hope of ever escaping.
I'm glad some others have seen the truth of what a scourge Illich is and also have machinations in place to oppose what they are doing at ever turn.
This is misleading about how capitalism works, capitalists are always looking for new ideas, about how to profit that is. All though this is a pretty accurate description of how book publishers work from what I have heard of them.
@NadezhdaNovikova 'feeling' encompasses more than just the sense of touch.
there's the other 4 senses 4 starters, plus the heart beating, the sensation of time passing, you're not explicitly thinking "one, two, three" etc., the sensation of genetic instincts, emotions...
@NadezhdaNovikova ...and it's receipt of sensory and genetic information that gives you that ability, in other words sensation, in other words 'feeling'.
It should be: I think therefore i have an idea of what i am,
@NadezhdaNovikova well, i never said you're not your brain, I'm just saying that feelings come first. And, as you've clearly implied, they can still come from the brain, or through the brain from the NS. The brain's just an extension of the NS really.
movement in the brain doesnt have to be thought, it could just be a reception of sensation. all sensation is internal movement without thought, if movement stops you're dead.
experiencing the passage of time is fundamental to our being. (i wonder if you agree with THAT)
we also notice that our experience of the passage of time speeds up and slows down depending on our mood (like when you're reading your fangirl's comments, or MY comments lol ; ))
so: your sensations are fundamental to your being.
you don't have to think in order to feel time passing.
@NadezhdaNovikova very perceptive, so i take it u agree...you're describing something called a reality tunnel, and there's a wonderful book u can download 4 free by Robert Anton Wilson, called Prometheus Rising.
@tamkukushka urm I don't think this is serious political comedy or trying to make a point dude, it's just absurdist humour satirising the "populist" I wouldn't take it too seriously.
These days you can self-publish anything if you got the cash to get your own book printed. If not, I would recommend Amazon's Kindle e-books. I have four different titles published with Kindle books as Susan Lee. (nothing off-color in any way, though). You could certainly explore your own philosphy and have it published on Kindle if you simply keep it all "clean".
@natmanprime Descartes? An idiot? You sir are mistaken. Sure he was wrong on several things, but he was correct on far more. Aristotle thought that everything revolved around Earth. Was he an idiot? No. Einstein was wrong about quantum mechanics. Was he an idiot? No. Furthermore, your statement about "I think, therefore I am" is incorrect. "I feel therefore I am" is just as valid as the former, because feeling is a perception, just like thinking. Why would the Central Nervous System come first?
@Flingtheduck Central NS comes first because it came before the brain. Sensation comes first before any thinking takes place. Feeling is not a perception, it's your reality. You think you percieve something, you KNOW you feel something.
you percieve something as an insult, you KNOW you feel hurt by it. U c?
You don't think you are, you KNOW you are.
without sensation or emotion, there's no means by which to think one thing over another.
His mistake is fundamental, unlike the others u mention
@natmanprime You make an interesting point. I retract my statement on "I think therefore I am". However your original statement about Descartes being an idiot remains false. Perhaps you have heard of the Cartesian coordinate system, or Cartesian doubt? These are key ideas in Geometry and Philosophy, respectively.
@Flingtheduck thank you for your open mindedness, i 100% agree with your retraction and your follow up statement...i'm sure Descartes came out with alot of clever stuff, so he wasn't a complete idiot then ; )
I think your comment belies a basic misunderstanding of what Descartes actually meant
which was not I am because I think or because I feel (which would have worked as well)
the point is the fact that you are even capable of thinking (or having an experience at all) proves that you EXIST, even if the whole world is merely an illusion fed to you by a malign demon, the fact that you can even think it as real shows that there is a you to malign
@RevolutionaryJam In that case, why did he choose 'thinking' specifically, as opposed to any sensation?
And even if we disregard that, his statement becomes rather pointless because it bols down to: I have the sensation of being, so i exist. Totally pointless statement, it answers nothing.
At least, I say what comes FIRST , and what is, therefore, fundamental.
Thinking is NOT fundamental.
He's
just
wrong
sorry ; )
PS i nearly didn't reply, i only noticed u bcos someone's reply took me here.
@natman I can only speculate as to the answer to your question
first of all he established that you might not even have a body, in which case sensations would be highly dubious
secondly "I think therefore I am" is a simplistic translation, it's more like "I think therefore I am IN THE MOMENT WHEN I THINK IT" though you may think you have thunk in the past doesn't mean you actually did, but at that moment when you even consider your existence you must exist in order to make that consideration
@RevolutionaryJam waitaminute, so...by that logic you don't need a body to think then???
sensations and thought are informaton, the difference is that 'thought' is rationalised information.
lol adding the words "in the moment when i think it" doesn't help.
while it's true, that while you experience thought, you must exist, it does NOT follow that 'thought' is the most basic aspect of existence, and if it isn't, then you might as well say "i eat food therefore i am"
@natmanprime I think you should study some philosophy because the questions you are asking are very basic and show that you do not understand the concepts that you are arguing
Descartes takes us through the stages of doubt one by one and concludes that no, we cannot be 100% sure that we have a body, for all we know we are plugged into the matrix or a brain in a jar ("deceived by an evil demon")
that is not to say he actually BELIEVES that is the case he just admits it as a possibility
so to continue, Descartes is not being sceptical for the sake of it, he means to raise doubt in order to banish doubt.
The point is even if you are at the mercy of a great malign deceiver the fact that you can conceive shows that you exist IN SOME FORM OR ANOTHER
IE. The only thing you can know with certainty (at this point in descartes thinking) is that you EXIST, he then goes attempts o rebuild knowledge from that foundation
of course in the East they disagree, they say "there is no self"
@natmanprime he does not say "I eat therefore I am" or "I walk therefore I am" etc etc etc because there is no way of knowing for sure you are doing those things, if you were a brain in a jar (oor plugged into the matrix etc.) you would not be eating it would simply be an illusion
2. We ARE a brain in a vat, if you like, that 'vat' is called the skull, DOESN'T change anything.
3. Of COURSE 'to think' means you must exist, u keep missing the point, I'm saying if it's not fundamental, then u might as well say anything...how about this then, "i am annoyed, therefore I am"?
4. ok try it this way: what comes before the thought?
This makes me slightly sad to be a student of philosophy xP

@NadezhdaNovikova 'feeling' encompasses more than just the sense of touch.
