I remember getting to go and see this at the BBC studios.I was fourteen and had been playing guitar a couple of years. The crowd was very polite and couldn't believe that One Man Band. It was a real experience I will never forget it as were all the Old Grey Whistle Test concerts I saw there.
Every song on Harvest conjures up different memories of that era for me...favorite being "A man needs a maid."...not for any misogynistic reasons...honest ; )
i am one of Neil Young's biggest fans!!!!! when i saw this for the first time it almost made me cry haha and it still almost makes me cry!! i wish i could see him, i am only 15 and i can relate to half of the stuff he says. my favorite song by Neil is Helpless because i moved from N.B to A.B and it took me awhile to make a change. but i hope i see Neil someday before i die!!
@YoungZeppelin2112 well somethimes I think I'm a huge fan to but actually compared to others I'm just a fraction of a fan. Like someone in my town has almost every cd/dvd published from Neil young. So as you know that is one hell of a collection! I had the privilegde (how you spell that? xD) of seeing Neil Young playing in Belgium, sportpaleis in 2008. Incredible and probably last time that he was in Belgium so I won't see him again I think. cheers
@ejgiv -granted, that was reallly good performance of theirs.
but if it werent for this very performance by Neil, that band never wouldve had the inspiration or cohones to good thru with the unplugged gig in the first place.
I dont know if your familiar with Mark Lanegan's solo records, but that first record, "The Winding Sheet", was like this ^ also a huge influence on them deciding to go unplugged.
When I get asked at drunk house partys or ever get asked the question. "If you could go see any gig in the world, dead or alive, who, and where would it be?"
This would be it. To have sat in that crowd and have witnessed this genius god like act. Is beyond me. (Watch all the way through, part 2,3, and 4.)

I love how he's just screaming in Old Man!!! AMAZING!!! and thats coming from a 16 year old! Neil is my HERO! I wish they would bring this kinda music back to the airwaves!! but since the lyrics actually have meaning... they probably wont because they only play are about scoring with chicks and money and being a ganster... retarded. I don't even consider that crap music! andyone can mumble to a beat!!! or scream to some shity assholes playing guitar!!!
I saw three seconds of the first bit, with the sound off. Out on the Weekend I thought. Sound on, I'm right. Well done me. Not really, its 'cos The Man gets into your soul and that will never ever go away. Now Old Man's playing..... Must go so I can drift away with the best ever songwriter to grace the Earth. Love you man.
Just got off the phone with Neil. Frankly I like mostly his '66 to '80 and only some of his more recent stuff (please no criticism from all of you far-out open-minded experimental lovers. His songs from 1980 on are sometimes great but too often not) No one even comes close in the number of great songs he has written. Next closest is John Lennon with the Beatles and early Elvis Costello before he went Cole porter in 1980.
I love Neil Young more than anybody. If only he's write back more than once a month (just kidding .. I wish). It is always amazing how he does some of his early performances as good or if not better than the record. To think when he was with Buffalo Springfield that he was scared of singing .. his voice is so heart-felt and amazing at times and one of his greatest weapons .. Never will be another like him.
He has been an inspiration for me the past few months. He is an inspiration for many musicians. I'm an indie artist who is ready for a change in american music.
I love Neil Young.. being able to watch this so easily makes me appreciate technology. I can't see how Neil would be opposed to us enjoying his music.
He's living comfortably.
Sit back and enjoy the music, don't waste your life away, arguing in the YouTube comment area :)

Funny to see all the piracy talk on a Neil Young performance. Posting the whole four part series seems a little over the edge but I've got a feeling the people that will tune in probably own a crazy amount of Neil Young CDs, DVDs, Vinyl, MP3a, Learn to Play Acoustic guitar, Bobbleheads etc etc. Think of this as marketing if it makes you feel better.

Judge for yourself. We`re coming up on the 15th anniversary of file sharing. How many bands that came out around 2000 do you still listen to ? No too many...The music "industry" was there for a reason man. To provide an excellent "product". YES, product. Label executives, producers, engineers, managers, A&R, etc.
@chev202 What? Music has not died, there's plenty of amazing stuff out there...you just have to get off your lazy ass and look for it. There's been crap in music since the dawn of time..there's no more today than there ever has been. And before you wallow in your own ignorance, not all rap and hip-hop is anything like what's popular on the radio right now.
@chev202 I think the song is called "Out on the Weekend" from After the Goldrush......he was always giving the impression of a lonely man....but he was happily married to susan when he wrote this song....then she left him because he was always away and on the road.......and then he met and fell in love with carrie snodgrass immediately! Never without his maid this guy!
you sound pretty bitter, guy. music has changed, not died. relationships are hard, but girls and women are out there. drink up, stop wallowing, and live it up. good luck.
does anyone know what microphones they used in these videos. they used them in the old grey whistle test a lot in the early 70s. Are the telefunken or neumann?
Watching him introduce such an epic song like "Old Man" for the first time in front of an audience like this is incredible. They had no idea what he was about to drop on there unsuspecting ears.
where are you Neil, I forgot about that song, and would love to just give you a bite on the face, a primal nip...u know...look how time the goes past, rolling into your songs, old man, a cool old man I'm sure!!!!!!!! Look at your lip, I can tell it's true! You're always welcome in Jersey, by the lake, with the cool history, U've Always Been the best, the sliviest, great word right? I think so but we could have written the dictionary, LOVE YOU!

If that were true the music must have been so much better before napster (1998).
Nuff said, bc we all know how much crap there was.
This "copying music on the internet kills good music" is a myth made by the richest of the rich, who now had to downgrade from Rolls to Bentley.
And ppl like Lars Ulrich said they were fighting for the little band..BS.
Never before have there been more succesful GOOD bands coming up than these days...
Before MTV and big labels dictated who made it and who didnt.

@chev202 What? Music has not died, there's plenty of amazing stuff out there...you just have to get off your lazy ass and look for it. There's been crap in music since the dawn of time..there's no more today than there ever has been. And before you wallow in your own ignorance, not all rap and hip-hop is anything like what's popular on the radio right now.

downrodeo2112 1 year ago
@chev202 I think the song is called "Out on the Weekend" from After the Goldrush......he was always giving the impression of a lonely man....but he was happily married to susan when he wrote this song....then she left him because he was always away and on the road.......and then he met and fell in love with carrie snodgrass immediately! Never without his maid this guy!

The show was recorded in 1971 in Massey Hall. Neil was about 25 years old.

This is not the Massey Hall show... read the info on the video. Listen to the Massey Hall show.. it's definitely not the same.

does anyone know what microphones they used in these videos. they used them in the old grey whistle test a lot in the early 70s. Are the telefunken or neumann?
chuck1990bb 2 years ago
Totally agree, just talking about songs like that, so new, and playing them so raw... just brilliant. God bless you Mr Canada!!!

This is so heady.
Watching him introduce such an epic song like "Old Man" for the first time in front of an audience like this is incredible. They had no idea what he was about to drop on there unsuspecting ears.
