if Im not mistaken its called Wushu, if I remember right all martial arts were outlawed in China during the communist movement in the mid 20th century, later the chinese gov. allowed only certain arts and schools to practice in order to compete in the olympics to show the world the power of China. those arts found a common ground wich is now named Wushu. dont quote me on it but I think thats how it got started :)

erm...i would not dare to say i know a lot about Chinese weapon fighting, but i believe by sparring & practicing with ppl using different weapons in this manner, they are able to apply their experience in real life weapon fighting.
