I see a totally different meaning to this, I see that If you met someone you know a close friend or colleague who you look up to and has better qualities of viewing than you, they totally help you see the world from a perspective you admire. You know can't follow in their footsteps, but you find it admirable that they have such potential and when they pass on you wish you they we're there to guide you, but at the same time you wish the best for them where ever they are.
@stramurto yeah dude! the dancing one or the lonley one? because if its the dancing one then he says bladibladiblabla and im sure hes having a good time but he didnt he just wached?
@andaldana I try to trick my self into believing I left her when I listen to this song, and that I found a sunny new world with a pretty new girl to dance with. But that illusion never lasts longer then 4:32. Where ever she is, I hope she is having a damn good time.
The best interpretation of purgatory I've ever seen! (and did you notice that the vox says "welcome to paradise" just before they open the lid to the dancefloor?
The way I see it, the miners experienced a cave-in and the area where they are dancing is paradise (Note the echoing of paradise as they open the trap door)
The man with the mustache died in the cave in but the other survived the ordeal. He's later explaining how he's having a hell of a time in this paradise dancing with these hot babes.
Regardless of the meaning of the music video, this song is 100% unrefined awesome.
This song really has nothing to do with dying or living lol but thats what they mix in...to make us think..but i dont know what the REAL meaning of this song is more like grabbing an oportunity to be famous but leaving you best friend behind in order to succeed...idk really im only 15 XD
@PoutineProductions When you've had a messy breakup from a person you really care about, and you slowly break out of that cave, and the world is like a dance with birds singing and the sun shining, and you realize that you don't need your past to be strong.
it was 10 years ago that i first brought this album, within 15 seconds of this first song starting i knew i had found an album that i was gonna love for the rest of my life :))
ha, didn't realise until I saw this, but one night at a club a girl made me do this dance with her. She just said 'follow what I do' and I did. Funny as.
If only I'd known wtf was going on at the time.. :(
@slitherlock lmfao, must be different cultures. Birthday is like, when you celebrate being born, and being a year older. Unless your just trolling lol
this song has helped me realize all the opportunities i have had in my life that have been wasted on procrastination and thinking about the things i should of done or said. thank you avalanches i needed that. beautiful song!
Whenever I hear this tune, I think about all the past mistakes and moments I questioned myself, realizing in hindsight that I had to find the strength to walk away from a lot of bad relationships, stupid bullshit and things I thought were important at the time to before I could discover quality people and real happiness moving forward with my life.
This would have to be one of the top vids EVER MADE, the editing, the lighting, the choreography. Humerus and touching. It can be interpreted in many ways. One more logical one would be that they passed out from lack of oxygen, hallucinated in their near death experiences, one is rescued and the other dies and stays in the heavenly hallucination. Sad but still beautiful. BIG credits to the film makers.
check out wikipedia for their album of the same name, it lists most of the samples the artist used for each song...this song used: "Everyday" by The Main Attraction "Anema E Core" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" by Tony Mottola "Daddy Rich" by Rose Royce "The Sky's the Limit" by The Duprees "Take Off Your Make Up" by Lamont Dozier "Let's Do the Latin Hustle" by Klaus Wunderlich
There is something so beautiful about this song and video, that trying to disect it to understand its meaning is like trying to disect your heart for the love that you feel for yourself.
@YhoJoKinson That's because these guys take stuff from other songs and put it in theirs. Maybe they got it from America Tin Man. There's a good chance.
Conversely, the other one enjoyed the Afterlife so thoroughly, because his soul wanted to stay there forever - he lived long enough and had his share of life (he's much older that the other miner).
...deep inside he wanted to come back (or he just didn't fit in there because it wasn't his idea of heaven). Hence, his hesitation). The rescue team found out the two unconscious, but one of them had such a strong will to live on that he could be brought back to life (notice that he's not very upset when he's getting black and white).
Now that I think of it - it does make sense that they both died and the one we hear speking at the end was rescued and brought back to life. I noticed the "welcome to paradise" bit just now, and it supports your interpretation. What makes it almost certain is what we hear at the end. Following this theory further - and looking back into a book titled "Life After Death," it seems it wasn't the rescued miner's time to leave this world - he just didn't experienced enough and...
And I feel so sorry for the i-can't-dance-so-i'm-gonna-die-alone fellow. One moment in which it was all about the talent of dancing changed one man's life and made the other miserable. It's really amazing that such an intelligent story could be told in a dance video! And it's amazingly puzzling why the Avalanches released such a brilliant album (10/10) and hasn't since.
Yes, the blonde girl is gorgeous/lovely, and the tune is gorgeous/lovely, and the samping is gorgeous/lovely, and the video is gorgeous/lovely. PS That guy isn't really big/fat - that's a handsome Australian dancer who got to wear additional clothes. PPS Someone said that the black-and-white man got to escape and the other died. Nonsense - the former got forcedly transported back to his dull life of a miner (and than of a lonely old man), and the latter can dance with lovely girls forever!!
the meaning of this beautiful video is that when you are hesitant and turn your back on opportunities of relationship with someone, than you will regret it for a very long time, this video is a great lesson
@RedWhiteGreenBandit I think the real meaning behind the video is that the other man died and the other got to escape. Listen to the 'Welcome to paradise' And the bird at the beginning and the end
@AndreLeCoz The meaning of anything, is what someone interprets it as. This is what the story means to Bandit, it's also wrong for him to say that that's the overall meaning, but still, you shouldn't provoke something like that, it's just stupid.
@HoboNoah wrong, only when something has no direct meaning are you free to make your own interpretation - but there is an actual story to this song which is about the brave miners who risk their lives and who some times die as a result of working in the dangerous conditions.
@AndreLeCoz Oh? So I HAVE TO THINK THE WAY THE VIDEO WANTS ME TO THINK. What is direct meaning, is it what's written down in hard text? Would I have to speak to the artists directly to get the direct meaning? Or do I just have to guess, over and over, until someone random, like you, tells me what he THINKS is the direct meaning. I don't care about the "story". That can have a lot to do with meaning, or absolutely nothing to do with meaning. My OPINION of this, is what it means to me.
@HoboNoah Hey moron u can have ur opinion only it's wrong....theres a clear message in this video, if u want to find some other meaning, fine. But that's not what the director had in mind when they made this video. So all you're doing is making an opinion in something that has no basis.....faggot.
@AndreLeCoz what do you mean "no basis"? My basis is the idea that I can perceive something anyway I choose. And I was just trying to point out, the message the director's trying to portray and the "meaning" of the film are two different things.
@CreativeFilmMaker just watch the expression of deep regret of the guy who is too shy to ask the lady for dance, even if this isn't exactly the message of the video and song, but at least this is what I got from it
@RedWhiteGreenBandit Although I agree with what you say I disagree that the video speaks of this. Who was hesitant? The short guy maybe didnt know how to dance... I think this video is more about two miners that were close to dying and heaven (the music and the girls) and one of them got saved (the short guy) and the other guy went to heaven, and is having a "damn good time". I think the message is: dont be afraid of living or dying, just dance :)
@fivos833 This is why The Avalanches are some of the best poets with their music and their visual pieces. I've heard so many different ideas about what this song and video is all about and after hearing about some, i've come to the conclusion that The Avalanches are one of the best over-looked musicians of all time.
fucking video =/

@RedWhiteGreenBandit wait really? I LOVE that reading of it, I never understood it though, what make you think that's the message?

@CreativeFilmMaker just watch the expression of deep regret of the guy who is too shy to ask the lady for dance, even if this isn't exactly the message of the video and song, but at least this is what I got from it

@RedWhiteGreenBandit Actually, clearly what happens is that the mustached guy dies and goes to heaven, but his friend survives.

@RedWhiteGreenBandit sounds more like a Carbon monoxide poisoning that caused halluzinations. One of the man got rescued, the other one died.
But seriously, this is a beautiful video

@HerrKorbes Dont think so, the canary was still alive :P
