the beatles were overwhelmed that carl perkins would allow them to record his songs, and even my overwhelmed he was in the studio to oversee them while they did so.
Beatles with an a and not double e, spelling mistake. Credit where it`s due, they were good. Sorry Beachboys, Monkees. Have to defend fellow Liverpudlians!
Who needs the fackin' Beetles? This, Buddy and a few others were the BEDROCK of Rockabilly. Rockabilly, a 5-window '32 coupe, a big stroked mill and some free time with your gal----what else do you ever need?
we love carl...I mean the whole gang over here we sit around and sing this one..I would have treasured to have meet him.and see him perform.a truely beutiful man! god rest youMr Perkins
thank you thank you thank you!!! pure,raw,unadorned,rock-a-billy the way its ment to be played! had the pleasure to see carl once in 1977. he wore that pale blue jumpsuite he did alot in later years.
Charlie Feathers and Carl Perkins were magic playing Honky Tonk music.Rockabilly is really a development of Hillbilly Boogie and probably Hank Williams would have been the greatest if he had lived.Elvis quickly left his home grown roots for the greenback by jumping on the watered down pop music band wagon to be accepted by and to please the masses.Commercially he was easy to sell.Good luck to the guy,but don't forget his roots and early Sun recordings!!!!
If it's one thing I know it's Rockabilly. I live eat, breath, and sleep Rockabilly. It's in my blood. Carl was the true king, following was Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, and so on. Mr. Perkins was and still is considered the true king of RnR.
@theonlysail- I think Carl was content being the King of Rockabilly, and letting Elvis have the King of Rock and Roll title. Carl will always be the greatest Rockabilly ever
No offense, friend, but if rockabilly "is in your blood", how come you call Chuck, Jerry and Gene rockabilly artists? They were rock'n'roll guys, not rockabillys! If you disagree, you must have a very strange definition of rockabilly...
saw carl perkins live in 1977 with bo diddley in Chatham, he rocked the place. If you like his Sun stuff check out his Columbia recordings, there's some really great music there. Marvellous stuff . Why mention the Beatles ? they murdered Carl's songs, isn't it Ringo singing Honey Don't ? Atrocious nonsense.
@simonnott You're right - the sad thing is that really was the most money Carl made in publishing. The same with Larry Williams, Arthur Alexander, Little Richard and all the other great American artists that the Beatles covered, it's depressing but true that yanks would rather have their own fabulous and authentic music covered by scouse chavs than the genuine article. They still think Twist & Shout is a Beatles original, as if McCartney and Lennon could write a gem like that.
i read an interview in the memphis paper and oddly feathers did not consider carl to be rockabilly. feathers had a very strict definition of what rockabilly was; you had to play brushes instead of drum sticks, etc.
History may have been different if Carl hadn't of had that auto accident causing his career to be put on hold. He was getting pretty well known at the time. By the way, think about it, Elvis's big influence was Dean Martin-now think of Elvis' deeper vocals and 'attitude'-it's Deano!
yes, and if my grandmother had wheels she would be a convertible...I'm quite tired of "ifs"... facts are facts my friend and the real fact it's that Elvis is too big to be compare with nobody with the exception of the Beatles and (perhaps) Michael Jackson, and I'm not very sure of this last statement.
I read both of these 'facts' somewhere. I happen to believe both, so what?. It said Elvis sang Blue Suede Shoes on TV instead, because Carl had the accident. It's like listening to Emmet Miller sing Lovesick Blues-without Emmit, there may not have been that beloved yodel, it's that Hank Yodel before Hank. Everything starts somewhere, just maybe not where we think it does. That doesn't discredit our icons, they didn't discredit theirs, they kept their heroes influences as part of themselves.
Elvis sang BSS on TV because was his latest single at the moment, not because Carl's accident. I heard from the same Carl Perkins that RCA wanted to record the song as the debut single of Elvis and he refused cause "Carl it's a friend of mine",and when he made the record Carl's original was on top of the billboard for several weeks. Anyway...I love Carl Perkins, that's the reason I found myself here watching and listening to his songs :-)
I hear lots of Hank Williams influence in the phrasing. So who coppied whom between Perkins and Presley. Probably hard for Carl Perkins to gain his own stardom when elvis had so much charisma. The Beatles could coppy anyone because being they were not a solo act and had so much talent, Charisma, foriegn novelty (in U.S.) If the girls go crazy, guess who sells records.
This is the sound that tweaked my mojo back in the otherwise drab fifties. Still sounds wonderful. Didn't George Harrison sing this at Carl's funeral?
Typical Rockabilly.... you can hear that true Blues, Gospel, Rock n Roll and Hillbilly all thrown together perfectly to form a perfect sounding track.
I met Carl a few years before he died & he told me about the Beatles session he attended at Abbey Road in 1964 while they recorded "Matchbox." He said they jammed together for about an hour but it was unrecorded. Pity. A REAL gentleman and missed.
I get a kick out of how they sped up the studio version intentionally to be in the key of F as to make him sound younger and more appealing to the teen market. Silly rabbits, Carl didn't need any help!
That may not have been an "accident". Carl's book, if I remember correctly, reflected his bitterness about this song. It was released about the same time in Memphis as Elvis's first hit. This song, had it been recorded properly was to have been Carl's foray into mainstream pop music.
This is the one with the jazz turnaround in E. In the original key and at the right speed, praise the Lord! When Sam released it it was in F or Fsharp because of his "speeding up is better" ideas.

These Beatles get in everywhere. You really believe Carl would or should be humbled in any way by this outfit. They and other British
groups inexplicably took over the US because of media hype. The true talent disgarded and replaced by clueless imitators. When asked
for his opinion 50's record producer Major Bill Smith responded "They stomp on beetles in Texas"
KOOLGENTS 4 years ago
