Man, I was looking for this song for a while. I knew it was by Rush, but it wasn't showing up just by going randomly from song to song on YouTube. Thankfully I heard it on the radio today on my way home from school, so I went to the radio's web site and found out the song's name.
A very powerful song emotionally for alot of us misfits...really a gloomy song for me all these years but still attracted to it and the haunting synths...like a firefly...
This song is much more relevant today than what it was when it was originally released in 1982. I wish all the misfits listen to this song, find solace in it and ultimately feel good about it.
@ChachaChapati Ahhhhhhhhh Maple Leaf Gardens, Ontario Place Staying at the Royal York Hotel, Driving The QE, The CN Tower, The beautiful Stadium where The Argonauts play, The Museums, Center Island, North York where I grew up Don Mills and Sheppard, Walking down Yong street Friday and Saturday nights going into bars to see some of the best talent around.
What a great town to come from, I have lived in Florida for 33 years now and I miss my old hometown.
@GhostsInMyAttic Just traveling there; I live in Cali. When I went to Toronto for the first time, I made sure to put on this and the rest of "Signals" after leaving the airport...had to hear YYZ, too.
@ChachaChapati I was borrn there to American parents my Dad played pro football for Toronto and my sister that just passed away was on the Canadian Olympic Diving Team.
Moved to FL in `79.
I`ve had my Canadian friends down the last couple weeks and we been touring strip clubs...lol
@ChachaChapati Yes something that from what I understand is no longer available but, I got mine in `78 I think? I do miss my sister she was very cool thanks for the kinda words.
I spend way too much money in those places I just sit back have a few beers and talk to a few girls, Then I buy them drinks then we have dinner with the girls and all of a sudden we spent a Grand...Damn Bitches...lol
I don't listen to Rush much, I love punk music, but my dad loves them and I appreciate the band's talent. A lot of punk and Rush have the same message... People live as though they're cut out of molds, and they live and think along with the crowd. I live and think for what I think is right, what I myself think is good or not. Society and the cookie-cutter people around me won't bring me down. I'm going to pursue my dreams, live them, and make my life significant! Don't lose the spirit of rock!
@hjmcgill thanks man. I agree. America is going to Hell, but we'll pull through... but, man I really hate the music that's playing on the radio today. I do feel kinda stupid that I quoted the lyrics wrong though. Thanks again to JoyfulGypsy for the correction
@SpeedyXGunz Don't feel stupid. I gave you the lyrics that I went with proudly for years. That's just it. I have a ton of those magazines that would print the lyrics of hit songs every month, and this song never made it. So I never knew the words. In fact, I didn't know who sang the song, so I couldn't look for the album. Didn't know anyone who knew. I was 11-12 years old. Black kid. I was stuck. I'm pulling out my 2-disk set for the commute tomorrow. OMG - Is that sad, or what?
It`s amazing to go back and see these guys, I grew up in Toronto, Canada my two older sisters went to high school with Neil and Geddy and Alex was my girlfriends neighbor.
We went to see them so many times I lost count same with Triumph free shows down on the lake front and parties. =]
OK...YouTube gave me a heart attack! It says that Rush is playing in Toronto my hometown, and I almost died of happiness!! Turns out it's some band called "Big Time Rush" which look like NSYNC wannabees....*sigh*
@loverofhighlanders20 Try going to Maple Leaf Gardens every year the night before new years and new years eve they have been doing 2 shows there for at least 20 years.
...Oh, and one last thing. Don't be surpised 'Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame,' that when you FINALLY induct them (hopefully in my lifetime), that Neil doesn't show. He cares nothing for the limelight, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was just Alex and Geddy accepting the award.
Rush, hands down, have some, if not, THEE best lyrics in the history of rock. Only this group can incorporate the lyrics, "Any escape might help disprove the unattractive truth, but the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth," into a cohesive and melodic song, that flows off the tongue, without one realizing the complexity of 'said' lyrics. It just fits, and that's Rush.
@SpeedyXGunz Man, you are so right. And the lyrics just grow on you with age. It was years before I really knew what Geddy was saying at, "any escape...," so I put in the words that fit for me; because when this song first came out, to me it WAS about the suburbs, hormones, charms and school - the restless dreams of youth! But he says it even better. And now, now the suburbs are in shambles, and America in general is on the way to hell in a handbasket. Kids of today just would not get this song.
@iknowmyus3rnamesucks I guess it's good to know there is someone out there of a younger age who can feel the angst that us 40-somethings knew only too well.
@Shanethefilmmaker Beiber is just a commodity; all flash and no substance. Perfectly symbolic of the vapid emptiness and utter shallowness of the modern (i.e., post-1970's) age.
@GasconyKid one thing positive I can say about him is he does give everybody what they want. His fans want him, while we want something bad to happen to him. Otherwise he wouldn't have agreed to that CSI episode.
I saw Rush in 85 , Power Windows tour. However,we couldn't see Neil Pert because he was completely conceiled behind his 144 peice drum kit. Freakin Awesome!
I saw Rush way back during their A Farewell to Kings Tour, @ the Allentown Fairgrounds in Pa. We were the first audience to hear Tom Sawyer and Limelight live.......memories to last a lifetime...i am over 50 now...God bless rock and roll
This is the second video I've seen tonight that has the wrong lyrics to a Rush song. C'mon, is it really that hard to find out the correct lyrics to a Rush song?
Never get tired of this wonderful song after almost 30 years. Just kicks butt and is timeless. My favorite RUsh song of all time although there are so many. Signals was just great.
I once had a great, vivid dream to this song when I was about 12. I was being loaded on this red rocket ship to be blasted off into space. Something about the music just SENDS, you know? I can't describe it, but every time I hear this song, I'm transported to that heady dream and the excitement I felt for that brief moment (at the time I wanted to be an astronaut). Just thought I'd share my own memory from this amazing song! :)
@Sue71 Very cool how certain songs from youth trigger that long and deeply instilled special memory. Thanks for sharing. But if you too terribly don't mind, i would love to hear more details about being "loaded" onto the red rocket ship. Were there other people or just you? Paint the scene. Was it futuristic-like or present modern day, both time and ship?
i love RUSH me and my dad listen to them all the time. my dad always says its odd seeing a 12 year old girl listening to a bands that came out when he was 12 or 13. I just dont like all the nowadays music it sounds like crap. this is real music
@jenny21935 Thanks for sharing Jenny. It's refreshing to hear youth feeling the same way as some of us older folks about the music of today compared to yesteryears. You let me know there is is still hope. Keep 'digging' (into) and spinning Dad's vinyl, and Rock On. (I'm assuming he still has some old records and maybe a dusty Technics turntable or some such ancient devise in which to spin 'platters')
"Any escape might help disprove the unattractive truth, but the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth..." My goodness! Henry James, or Geddy Lee?
Congratulations Joan Jett on being nominated ahead of RUSH for the Hall of Fame. I love rock and roll/So put another dime in the jukebox baby. RUSH just couldn't come up with the lyrics, that's their problem.
@Thenitrohawk64 geez guys chill. kyoozocanada was makin a joke. he was saying in a joke way that rush has awesome lyrics while joan jet suckks. kyoozo not nice to call another rush fan an idiot. we gotta stickk together boys and girls.
Thee will be done. I just wish she had ran. No one could comprehend sitting powerless to help one's child to save her soul, and be the only one to know that was happening. I protected her to my demise, who would not their child. I will still march into hell and fight for her, it was a heavenly cause. Yes i see and Heaven caused. But are they forsaken beyond life. One's alive. Is that the beast or the soul. The priests i would not ask, belief or doubt. But i pray to save them. it is bitter,
the lyrics are posted front and center yet they seem to evade attention by nearly all...Is there not a dreamer here **stuck** in a sh*t job who get's these lyrics?
Good job on this vidio these lyrics are fantastic I've always listened to rush but I never actually paid close attention now after reading them rush are pure musicians to the word this song hits the nail on the head in terms of the burbs these lyrics are so %100 true
Thanking you for posting the lyrics. This is my all time favorite song. How these guys are not in the Hall of Fame is an absolute disgrace. Long live RUSH
@hoss861 all those 3 people this and 10 people that comments are so fucking annoying. and btw, this song is FOR the castouts, the misfits, the dreamers, the non-conformists.
@piratebri I think we like the poetry of this and the great performer's RUSH... I know exactly what this means. No not good, but conform or be conformed by OUR government. you think we're free? Not really. But don't be different or you'll be shut down.
Classic song, the angst of youth. :-) First heard it on the way to SUNY Oneonta to pick up a friend to go to the 250cc USGP motocross at Unadilla many years ago.
Awesome band. You can tell they work extremly hard to write these complex songs. Theres not one band out there like them. Maybe Dream Theater but no lol
This song reminds me of my childhood in the early 2000's. I remember hearing this song all the time and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I really thank my dad for introducing Rush to me at such a young age. Rock on!!

One's alive. Is that the beast or the soul. The priests i would not ask, belief or doubt. But i pray to save them. it is bitter,

@hoss861 all those 3 people this and 10 people that comments are so fucking annoying. and btw, this song is FOR the castouts, the misfits, the dreamers, the non-conformists.
oldvat19 5 months ago
@hoss861 no no no, 3 people have been conformed, the 341 people were cast out, thats better =)
RamsdenB 5 months ago
@hoss861 Nope! Not at all... them three "conformed". (This most excellent classic wasn't made for the likes o' them anyway...)

@hoss861 No excuse. I was cast out all my life, and this song is still great =)

@piratebri So if we hit the "like" button we are conformists?
GhostsInMyAttic 1 month ago
@piratebri I think we like the poetry of this and the great performer's RUSH... I know exactly what this means. No not good, but conform or be conformed by OUR government. you think we're free? Not really. But don't be different or you'll be shut down.

Classic song, the angst of youth. :-) First heard it on the way to SUNY Oneonta to pick up a friend to go to the 250cc USGP motocross at Unadilla many years ago.

This song reminds me of my childhood in the early 2000's. I remember hearing this song all the time and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I really thank my dad for introducing Rush to me at such a young age. Rock on!!
