why on every one of these trailers do I have to correct the number of soldiers present at the battle? It's obvious that not everyone is well versed in history, but if you want to get touched up on the facts of the legendary battle go to Wikipedia, and type ""Battle of Thermopylae"". And just so everyone knows, this movie (while totally awesome looking) is historically inaccurate on many counts. For one, the Spartans weren't even Democratic, they were Oligarchic. I can go on and on, but I won't.
It's a hell of a lot more accurate then some of the comments I've read on this site, thats for damn sure. Besides, I've read the entire article, and I can assure anyone that the info is reliable.
roflmao. of course, frank miller, the god of movie fx. True that this movie is going to be mostly entertainment right? like who want to see a "march of the pinguins"type of movie. Let there be blood.
An old man wandering around the Olympic Games looking for a seat was jeered at by the crowd until he reached the seats of the Spartans, whereupon every Spartan younger than him, and some that were older, stood up and offered him their seat. The crowd applauded and the old man turned to them with a sigh, saying "All Greeks know what is right, but only the Spartans do it."
Americans are the true inheritors of Democracy and embody the Spartan Warriorship creedos, much more so than Modern Greeks who are far removed from the Ancient Greeks. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA arodo ur a moron have u ever heard of the battle of thermoplyae dipshit get ur shit right before u make a ridiculous statement like that
It is based on a comic. The comic is based on a true story they making the movie in comic book style for effect. Also next time you call people stupid make sure you spell correctly and learn grammer.
Greeks killed 10000 elites of the persian empire on the third wave of attack... If you calculate the rest it is more than 35.000. I am greek, i have a history book in front of me... i am precise :P
gidearom, Alexander never defeated the Spartans because he never fought against the Spartans. His father Phillip fought against the Southern Greeks in Chaeronea, but Spartans did not participate. Spartans had been defeated earlier by the Thebans. And Sparta itself was conquered for first time by the Romans around 145 BC
This would be the fight against persia where 300 Spartans stood for three days against the persians, The Spartans would have won but Persia flanked them, this is that battle.
well at the time of Alexander the great, the spartans were nothing like they were during the Persian Invasion or the previous centuries when they were considered invincible and enemy armies would tremble at the sight of a spartan.
DrunkBishop is right, the Mongols had the largest "empire" ever... if we can call it that... but tehnically they had the largest chuck of land conquered at ONE time :)
But i was under the impression that Alexander did defeat the spartans...
BTW the largest Empire in human history was the Mongolian Empire, stretching from Korea to Poland, and the longest living Empire was the Byzantine, existing for more than 1000 years.
Exactly one year later, King Pausanias of Sparta leaded the allied army of 50.000 Greeks (5.000 of them Spartan hoplites), to the fields of Platea (central Greece) to face the remaining 100.000 Persians. It was a slaughter with over 90.000 Persians killed, including general Mardonius.
2 days after Thermopylae, the Persians entered to Athens and burned her to the ground. But the day after, at the straights of Salamis, the Athenian fleet anihhilated the Persian armada and forced Xerxes to return to Persia, leaving in Greece 100.000 of his soldiers under the command of general Mardonius.
The sacrifice of King Leonidas and his 300 bodyguards was of immense moral value. He stood in Thermopylae for 5 days giving time to Sparta`s biggest rivals- The Athenians to evacuate their city and gather their population and their fleet to the nearby island of Salamis.
They were also 700 Plateans and 1000 Thespians there, because their cities were the nearest to Thermopylae, and the first to be destroyed if the Persians would advance.
Each Spartan hoplite had 7 followers-servants. These servants were preparing his camp, food, carrying his weapons etc. In battle they were skirmishers. If they hsd showed great valour in battle then they could win political priviledges and become Spartan citizents. In Thermopylae they were 2000 of these servants.
im hispanic but i dont think the spanish were the greatest empire. They were greedy people who declined because of their wanting for gold and eliminating innocent people who had it. the spartans were couragous people who knew only about honor and defended their land even though they knew they were going to lose and they prevailed. i believe the spartans were ten times better than any spanish country would ever be. sorry to stay but the truth hurts.
that's true, during the Spartan/Athen's war the reason the Spartan's lost was because they refused to use bow and arrows (which the Athenian's used) cause it was dishonourable
are you kidding? Athnens creamed the Spartan's during tha civil. That's why the Greek Capitol is Athens and the Sparta that used to be there is in ruins and tourists go there to see what was once a big city.
The pelloponesian war was very bloody and destructfull for both parties. Both parties lost their previous glory. But it was the Spartans who won the war at the lat phace in Sicely (Syracuse). The Athenian army was crash completely (noone returned, survivors died as slaves at the mines). After the war an spartan rule was established in Athens but only for a few years.
I have practised my Ancient Greek on Herodotus and I was translating the book.... :)
The lack of Architectular buildings of Sparta in comparison with Athens is because of the difference on culture.
Spartans was from the dorian tribe and Athenians from the Ionic. Spartans were more conservative and Athenians were libelar. Both were good mylitery powers.
But as an individual soldier a Spartan was the best ever. Spartans from the age of 7 years old lived a life of training and fighting.
They used arrows but not a lot: these battles favoured closed compat and heavy armor because of the rough terrian.
Spartans were like devils, they would have done anything to win a battle (no considarations about arrows). If it was dishonourable to use arrows they wouldn't have hunt with arrows.
There was a law in Sparta never leave the battle-field but there was not any law not to use arrows.
No i watched a documentary on Sparta, it was quoted from a historical text that the Spartan's refused to use arrows as it was dishonourable. They got hunted down like flies by the Athenians.
True that the Athenians lost the pelloponesian war but
they destroyed the Spartan's later.
I know this because the Greek Capitol is currently Athen's NOT Sparta
I am sure that you haven't watched the documentary quoting that. The was not any law forbitting Spartans from using arrows. Bec of their training they never were used as archers (maybe the slaves, but not as archers, as petalstes)...
Athens has never been capital of Greece before 1845AC.
Sparta was never crashed by Athens. Even Alexander the Great haven't won them. Alexander won and unified all the greek states except the LAKEDAIMON (Lake-DEAMON), the Spartans!
Hey Morons who cares which was the greatest empire, Dont waste your comments here unless it is about the movie, Which by the way it the best thing I have ever seen in a long long time! Cant wait to see it!
Of course its gonna be great i guess. I m excited and really wonder about this. The state i didnt like is this: Some guys use this subject for boasting about their political fantasies. Greeks werent so free in the history. They were ruled by many other nations. Lastly i remember, they were ruled by the Turks for 4 centuries, and that is a very long time.. So be cool, and dont boast please.
The Persians where not barbarians. I guess the people had no say as to should happen. No freedom of speach and stuff etc. But the Greeks did have the freedom of speech etc..Basicaly Greeks fought with everything they got because they didnt want to loose their freedom
god damn you people. they were all barbarians, stop trying to make it out to be some socio-politico bullshit. its just a retelling of the battle of thermopolaye, its a great story, and yes, at the time this movie takes place the persians were ransacking all of the known world. so get over yourselves and enjoy what looks like its gonna be a great movie.
Always the same story. People from east are barbarians. People in west are civilized and deserve everything fine. Barbarians don't even deserve to live. Becouse they re different. And these civilised dont have endurance for difference. And heroes belong to those who have written the history. Every honest historian knows this. So this is not greek power. This is politics.
In the Greek culture the most important thing is FREEDOM. We can loose everything but freedom. Freedom is a power that comes from within. If you are free you can think better, love, think and fight better. Our culture is based on our freedom.

gidearom, Alexander never defeated the Spartans because he never fought against the Spartans. His father Phillip fought against the Southern Greeks in Chaeronea, but Spartans did not participate. Spartans had been defeated earlier by the Thebans. And Sparta itself was conquered for first time by the Romans around 145 BC
DrunkBishop 5 years ago
This would be the fight against persia where 300 Spartans stood for three days against the persians, The Spartans would have won but Persia flanked them, this is that battle.

well at the time of Alexander the great, the spartans were nothing like they were during the Persian Invasion or the previous centuries when they were considered invincible and enemy armies would tremble at the sight of a spartan.
chrisfromoh 5 years ago
DrunkBishop is right, the Mongols had the largest "empire" ever... if we can call it that... but tehnically they had the largest chuck of land conquered at ONE time :)
But i was under the impression that Alexander did defeat the spartans...

It's based on a Graphic novel you jack ass. No one says its based on real events.
It's fantasy. But thanks for finding a way to bash America. That's clever. No one has EVER done that. Moron.

BTW the largest Empire in human history was the Mongolian Empire, stretching from Korea to Poland, and the longest living Empire was the Byzantine, existing for more than 1000 years.
DrunkBishop 5 years ago
Exactly one year later, King Pausanias of Sparta leaded the allied army of 50.000 Greeks (5.000 of them Spartan hoplites), to the fields of Platea (central Greece) to face the remaining 100.000 Persians. It was a slaughter with over 90.000 Persians killed, including general Mardonius.
DrunkBishop 5 years ago
2 days after Thermopylae, the Persians entered to Athens and burned her to the ground. But the day after, at the straights of Salamis, the Athenian fleet anihhilated the Persian armada and forced Xerxes to return to Persia, leaving in Greece 100.000 of his soldiers under the command of general Mardonius.
DrunkBishop 5 years ago
The sacrifice of King Leonidas and his 300 bodyguards was of immense moral value. He stood in Thermopylae for 5 days giving time to Sparta`s biggest rivals- The Athenians to evacuate their city and gather their population and their fleet to the nearby island of Salamis.
DrunkBishop 5 years ago
They were also 700 Plateans and 1000 Thespians there, because their cities were the nearest to Thermopylae, and the first to be destroyed if the Persians would advance.
DrunkBishop 5 years ago

Drbolla345 5 years ago
that's true, during the Spartan/Athen's war the reason the Spartan's lost was because they refused to use bow and arrows (which the Athenian's used) cause it was dishonourable
CHumga 5 years ago
i think this is not true bec. in greece we learn that they finaly the Spartans won the war!
lipooo 5 years ago
i meant the civil war between Athens and Sparta
lipooo 5 years ago
are you kidding? Athnens creamed the Spartan's during tha civil. That's why the Greek Capitol is Athens and the Sparta that used to be there is in ruins and tourists go there to see what was once a big city.
CHumga 5 years ago
History lessons:
The pelloponesian war was very bloody and destructfull for both parties. Both parties lost their previous glory. But it was the Spartans who won the war at the lat phace in Sicely (Syracuse). The Athenian army was crash completely (noone returned, survivors died as slaves at the mines). After the war an spartan rule was established in Athens but only for a few years.
I have practised my Ancient Greek on Herodotus and I was translating the book.... :)
lipooo 5 years ago
The lack of Architectular buildings of Sparta in comparison with Athens is because of the difference on culture.
Spartans was from the dorian tribe and Athenians from the Ionic. Spartans were more conservative and Athenians were libelar. Both were good mylitery powers.
But as an individual soldier a Spartan was the best ever. Spartans from the age of 7 years old lived a life of training and fighting.
lipooo 5 years ago
About his arrow thing:
They used arrows but not a lot: these battles favoured closed compat and heavy armor because of the rough terrian.
Spartans were like devils, they would have done anything to win a battle (no considarations about arrows). If it was dishonourable to use arrows they wouldn't have hunt with arrows.
There was a law in Sparta never leave the battle-field but there was not any law not to use arrows.
lipooo 5 years ago
No i watched a documentary on Sparta, it was quoted from a historical text that the Spartan's refused to use arrows as it was dishonourable. They got hunted down like flies by the Athenians.
True that the Athenians lost the pelloponesian war but
they destroyed the Spartan's later.
I know this because the Greek Capitol is currently Athen's NOT Sparta
CHumga 5 years ago
I am sure that you haven't watched the documentary quoting that. The was not any law forbitting Spartans from using arrows. Bec of their training they never were used as archers (maybe the slaves, but not as archers, as petalstes)...
Athens has never been capital of Greece before 1845AC.
Sparta was never crashed by Athens. Even Alexander the Great haven't won them. Alexander won and unified all the greek states except the LAKEDAIMON (Lake-DEAMON), the Spartans!
lipooo 5 years ago
It wasn't law that they didn't use arrows, they didn't use arrows because they believed it to be dishonourable.

what i don't understand why was there so many more persians then greeks?
er1115 5 years ago
Of course its gonna be great i guess. I m excited and really wonder about this. The state i didnt like is this: Some guys use this subject for boasting about their political fantasies. Greeks werent so free in the history. They were ruled by many other nations. Lastly i remember, they were ruled by the Turks for 4 centuries, and that is a very long time.. So be cool, and dont boast please.

Dude, it's only a movie (a superb movie that is)
MyLittleUserName 5 years ago
The Persians where not barbarians. I guess the people had no say as to should happen. No freedom of speach and stuff etc. But the Greeks did have the freedom of speech etc..Basicaly Greeks fought with everything they got because they didnt want to loose their freedom
Achileas101010 5 years ago
god damn you people. they were all barbarians, stop trying to make it out to be some socio-politico bullshit. its just a retelling of the battle of thermopolaye, its a great story, and yes, at the time this movie takes place the persians were ransacking all of the known world. so get over yourselves and enjoy what looks like its gonna be a great movie.

I just love it <3

Always the same story. People from east are barbarians. People in west are civilized and deserve everything fine. Barbarians don't even deserve to live. Becouse they re different. And these civilised dont have endurance for difference. And heroes belong to those who have written the history. Every honest historian knows this. So this is not greek power. This is politics.
golebshera 5 years ago
In the Greek culture the most important thing is FREEDOM. We can loose everything but freedom. Freedom is a power that comes from within. If you are free you can think better, love, think and fight better. Our culture is based on our freedom.
