I love how he practically lifts her into the car without her spoken permission, and then pushes her into the car. It's creepy and sexy at the same time, haha.
Jean Harlow may not have been what you call a classic beauty, but she was beautiful on the inside and out.The way they talk in old movie,on any language, isn´t wrong,it´s the generation of today that can´t speak proper.
I've never gotten what men saw in her. She's bent over and looks like she has two black eyes. And that outfit! What kind of a decent woman would have let a man stand so close at this time? Weird.
@Songsmirth Jean Harlow did not have class or the best face or fashion sense, but she did have a sensational body, trafficstoppingly dropdead gorgeous. Evident by hint, in outline in long 1930s bodyslinking skirts.
Poor Jean. Born in 1911 so she would have been about 19 when this picture was made. Died in 1937. The original blond bombshell. The only one who ever came close to her was Marilyn Monroe.
Jean always got praised for her looks, but blasted for her acting... I can see why! Who thought to give her the phony Oxford accent... "IIthurr" for either my ass!
youve obviously never seen any of Jeans later movies...because she turned into quite an excellent comedic actress...this early effort was before she started getting the full blown M-G-M star treatment and starring in her movies...check out "Red Dust" or "Dinner at 8" or "China Seas"...youll be amazed at the difference in her acting ability.
Yeah. Her Mother insisted she take elocution lessons from Brits, like all stars at the time did. She's not very good in this, although the star quality is there in spades. By the time she died she was a brilliant comedy actress. Like Monroe, we'll never know what might have been.
Her speech is actually a unique amalgam of flat miswestern tones, nasally 1930s telephone operator pronunciation, coached upper crust diction and baby talk, making it very hard to emulate. Nobody else spoke like that, ever!
Love the response Cagney gives to Harlow's character: "We're not gonna be strangers." Classic Cagney with the fist bump on the back of her arm as well.
This looks to be in the vicinity of Wilshire Blvd. Perhaps towards the eastern part of Wilshire, around where it intersects Normandie, Vermont, Western, etc.
No, the street lights are very unique to Los Angeles. These lights were installed to the Wilshire area in the 1920s and many of them are still in place today. Furthermore, one of these buildings shown in the movie is also still standing, it is just north of Wilshire, in what is known as Korea town today. However the street name escapes me. Next time I am in that part of town, I will see what the street name is and post it.
Jean Harlow was the first platinum blond star in Hollywood. She was born Harlean Carpenter in Kansas City, Missouri in 1911. She died at the age of 26 of renal failure. Her mother was a devout Christian Scientist, and because of her religious beliefs wouldn't allow any standard medical treatment when her daughter was deathly ill.
I love to hear Jean, who in so many of her films played a tough broad, use carefully coached upper-crust pronunciation to say in this clip, "You can let me off here. I'm going to meet my friends on the corner...."
James Cagney was a wonderful actor, too, whose tough guy character perfectly complimented Jean Harlow's persona.
Thats called being human.Today we are backwards ass clusterfuct by a bunch of assholes that think they know shit, and everyone mindlessly follows.A little tochn might get people back into feelin human, instead of shooting each other.
Jean Harlow was the "it girl" before Marlyn Monroe. Wow... watching this footage really makes it hard to believe that she has been dead for over 70 years.
Actually, it isn't a Texas accent. It is the standard pronunciation that was taught to many Hollywood actresses. It was very much of the time, and was considered to be an elegant way of speaking. That is why it is so ironic that Jean Harlow, who most often played the role of a floozie, spoke that way. She was, if fact, born in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Lol. If you took a ride from a stranger now you'd get gangraped.
