  • The L-1011 is like a family member that I love dearly and I don't get to see anymore !!

I miss that old lady !!

    great video !!!

  • The aircraft begins the right turn over Barbers Point and flies directly over Iriqouis Point into Honolulu International.

  • At least the L-1011 flaps were quiet, unlike the flaps on newer planes like the A380.

  • love the flaps

  • When i worked for delta, i did this route every time on the L-1011. Miss those birds alot.

  • The L1011 is already greatly missed. I had the great pleasure of flying on Delta L1011s many times as aa young man and I have to say, those were truly great times. A true queen of the sky.

  • Filmed on the day I was born. Wow....

  • Filmed on the day I was born. Wow....

  • Are there any L-1011's still flying?

  • @msk7046 RAF mostly, Sheldon Adelson has 1 private Tristar (N388LS) and couple more maybe in comercial service.

  • great vid

  • "Lockheed has always built the most high tech and best aircraft available. To bad they never figured out how to make money off of it."

  • "Lockheed: Confidently accomplishing the tasks for which it was built"

  • Feb. 18th My Brothers B-Day!!

  • those engines were the best!

  • @dougiecoolietrini To bad they killed the plane.

  • I never got to fly a L1011... I think I just did... Thanks :)

  • i was to be born in about 3 months...

  • Feburay 19th? Thats MY BIRTHDAY!

  • @VieneSuSu the boeing 727 had high lift devices..that was a beautiful jey ..pitty they took it off service......designed for short take offs.....I miss it.

  • @pentogram23 Old and inefficient. But with some upgrades...

  • kind of scarey when air brakes are deployed in midair...I guess they know what they are doing.....LOL

  • @pentogram23 do you get scared when you're slowing down to exit the freeway in your car and you have to tap your brakes too?......same thing here

  • @pentogram23 The air brakes (spoilers) are used to slow down faster. Many times Air Traffic Control will ask to slow down more to separate traffic who may be ahead being lined up for landing.

  • Useed to do these flights in First Class every other month in the 80s with my Cousin who worked for Delta.

  • music goes perfectly with the video, so calming and peaceful, much like how it felt like to ride on a tristar.....Oh, those days.

  • @ie210 Thanks. The L-1011 was a treat to all passengers who enjoyed traveling by air. In those days, I had the chance to ride in first class. What a joy. I loved the LAX ATL SJU trips. From boarding, the special sound of the doors closing or opening. The firm click sound of the landing gear when it was locked before landing until the friendly wave goodbye by the flight attendants made the entire travel experience unforgettable.

  • @1DLflyer Was the L1011 a quiet plane sitting in the back? I never flew on one, but every video I have seen seems to show a pretty quiet cabin. Pretty amazing when you think it's 43 year old technology already! I remember reading some years back, that the L1011 was already Stage III compliant even before there even was a Stage III !!

  • @Coaljet Yes, it was!. As you can see in the video, I was sitting in the last bulkhead seat by the exit door behind the wing, and you can tell how quiet it is. It didn't even vibrate like it does in the 747s

  • L-1011 the best alongh with delta have floen on both and rank them among the best, but the L-1011 was and still is the best large airplanes to fly on.

  • That was a smooth landing!!

  • i wanna go back!!

  • Awesome vid, Luv the L-1011. great to watch the DLC in action too.

    Thanks for posting.

  • A 707 at the end too - Fantastic!

  • @jackd166

    Actually, that's a Douglas DC-8-60

  • 777 flaps are also HUGE!

  • Best plane ever.

  • Who were the pilots?

  • Ahh rolls royce. Beautiful sound.

  • 1. What Song is played at the beginning?

    2. L-1011 has some of the largest flaps I've ever seen.

    3. Very smooth landing.

  • Smooth landing indeed. Only Delta pilots do it! ha ha. I suppose you don't like watching a video on its entirety. Watch it again, and wait for the credits to answer your first question. Thanks for watching!

  • Yes, I love these kind of videos and I watched from the beginning. Didn't realize that song info.

  • @1DLflyer Not true, I flew on AWE and I didn't even realize the plane was down.

  • @1DLflyer *No disrespect intended

  • "Miss you My Hawaii"

  • @bryanb16th the song is I miss you my Hawaii - Na Leo

  • I miss taking off from the 'Reef Runway' out of Hickam.

  • I was fortunate to travel during my youth. I experienced Tri-Stars on Delta and TWA!

  • My first flight on the L-1011 was for my job interview LAX to ATL on a DL business pass. Since then, I always selected the flights with L-1011s.

  • @1DLflyer My first flight was on a L-1011 back in Oct. 1993 Delta flight 38 ATL-AMS-STR. I love and miss the L-1011; her shear power, and size un-matched performance. My new baby is the 767-332ER.

  • No place like Hawaii. If only there were a paradise on earth, Hawaii would be it.

  • The only chance I got to fly on an L-1011 was 4 years ago on Euro Atlantic's CS-TEB, an aircraft that was used formerly for Tajikistan Airlines and Air Portugal. It was the best flying experience ive ever had out of all the planes ive been on.

  • never once got tofly on one :(

  • too bad. If you should ever get the chance to fly one take it. The L-1011 will give you one of the best rides of your life.

  • yeah, it's an awesome airplane. i got to ride on a DC-10 like 5 times but the L1011 is better

  • I took that same route and plane, i believe it was in '95 though.

  • memorys come flooding back of flying on TWA's L10's, thanks for the amazing memories.

  • honululu was so windy yesterday at the DVA event fly in. anyways great video i was looking for something like this

  • What ever happened to the good old days...

  • State: Hawaii

    Island: Oahu

    City: Honolulu

    Home.

  • Mahalo!

  • I'm a native Hawaiian and I get along with everybody. Only a few are like that because they say Hawaii is not a state.

  • The aviation industry is in a bad way these days. IMO the best era of flying was the 1990s, when all the trijets were still active, and there were coachmeals for FREE.

I'm in the process of getting my private pilots liscence. I was hoping to become an airline pilot one day, but now I am having serious doubts.

  • @ThreeCharlieKilo

and back then the airlines actually PAID you.

  • what ever happend to the good ol days of flying? now they stuff you into what is basically a stretched private jet with very small seats

  • Yes and now it's everything computer... no more 4 people in 1 cockpit so they talk etc... it was more fun flying in those days true

  • Does everyone in Honolulu wear grass skirts and big flowery shirts and necklaces? Great footage, music is nearly making me puke though.

  • probably not, Im sure its just a stereotype

  • You can always turn the sound off

  • I miss this beautiful bird in the sky. What a marvellous aircraft! Good bye L-1011

  • first flight i ever took was this plane, this airline, and this exact route

  • ah, the good times...

  • Great Video I've only flown on a L-1011 one time from Egland AFB LA to Norton AFB CA in 1985 Great Plane to fly on ...How long was your flight from LAX to Honolulu?

    Keep Rocking

    Elstarbreaker

  • a little over 5 hrs.

  • you've must have been flying ATA Airlines

  • It says in the title Delta

  • Great vintage video! Never lucky enough to flight a Tristar before, maybe some day.

Thanks for sharing, check out some of my vids!

  • Those L-1011 are as tough as a brick shithouse!

Love those classic Honolulu landings, swaying in the Kona winds then touching down on a runway in paradise battered by salt, extreme heat and the landing gear of a heavy every 3 mins!

Good to see an AIR Marshall Islands DC-8 on the ramp at 5:23!

  • I Miss You, My Hawaii by Na Leo

  • wow, he had to put the spoilers up in midair!

  • when i was little, my grandma and grandpa would fly out twice a year to see my uncles,...grandma loved this plane. even though she wasnt 100% informed of all the technical stuff....she always said, "thats the best plane there is". and she could never stop telling us how smooth the flight was. unfortunately..when i started flying, the L-1011 was gone:-(....but boy, would i give anything so experience that "smooth ride"...THANKS! GREAT VID*!

  • Thanks for your comment. The first time I took my parents on the L-1011 was from LAX to SJU. We flew in First class, and as we sttled down the flight attendants were hanging my parents coats and we were getting our drinks , my dad asked me when were we going to get on board. I replied that we were on board already, to which he replied "I thought we were in the First Class pre-boarding lounge"!

That was a classic that shows how wonderful this airplane was.

  • Bring back the l-1011 and Ill be a happy traveler. The best plane of all time.

  • I couldn't agree with you more...

  • This has to be in the early 90's. nice video. By the way I live in Ewa Beach. Those planes always passed over my house in the mornning hours.

  • I listen to KINE 105FM on the interternet and they play it all the time. Also, done this landing with Hawaiian and ATA from LAX over a dozen times until they retired the fleet. LOVE this approach into HNL. Bitchen fun man. And oh so beautiful!

  • Thanks!. I agree with you. Nothing beats the excitement of arriving into HNL and for the exciting time awaiting for you.

  • omg you were on the exact same bridge I was on. I went to gate 24....

  • I really miss this plane. Since my dad worked for Delta here in Hawaii we flew between here and LA alot on this great bird. My last L-1011 flight was when I was 6 back in June of 2000. I wish Lockheed still made these planes!

  • My grandad helped build that plane! :]

  • No. They are not INBOARD AILERONS. They are spoilers

  • Actually, the L-1011 does have inboard ailerons.

  • so the l1011 does have inbored alirons

    nive video!

  • I love the song at the end how did you find it?

  • play the end titles and Google it

  • I flew on 2 DL L's CVG-ZRH-CVG July 95.

  • You must been aboard an L-1011 series 500. I hope you received a great service. Thanks for flying Delta!

  • What kind oof plane is that?

  • You are very observant. Have you read the title of this video?. Does that tell you what you want to know?. Have you read the other comments too?. They all know what kind of plane it is.

  • I should have wached the whole video,Good Video!

  • Delta was one of the biggest L-1011 users in the world.

  • they were the largest L-1011 user.

  • Really? Thank you. :)

  • Very smooth touch down, barely even noticed

  • man, great vid, i miss the tri star and that rollys royce hum

  • i used to fuel these planes...wow..man they took forever it seemed to get done. but they were ahead of their time when they were in flight.

  • This would be an even better video if the music wasn't in the background, but hey whatever floats your boat.

  • great video, it's just a shame Lockheed doesn't make commercial airliners anymore. The Tristar is a great plane.

  • wow!

  • You got it! Many times you'll see that happen during descent, mostly when ATC request the pilot to drop the speed to set the many arrivals taking place.

  • Thanks :)

  • Actually, in the case of the L1011, what your watching is the Dynamic Lift Control in action, those spoilers are controlling the rate of descent, not the airspeed. The L1011 maintains a constant angle of attack on approach.

  • Thanks!. I hope you don't mind the music. To me, it adds the Hawaiian mood to the video. :)

  • LOVE the music! They should have had that playing on the intercom LOL! :) Also, can anyone tell me why they're using the spoilers in flight? I've never seen that done before. Are they trying drop their airspeed quickly?

  • great video, i was in honolulu at that time 1993 was great i have many pics but no videos , sad ,but u got this so im happy

  • Were you the one that was filming it?

  • yes :)

  • When you look at Honolulu in the vid it looks so cool compared to today.

  • L-1011 is one great plane that will totally be missed. Thanks for the behind the wing footage, that wing is marvelous. It's so cool to see that Direct Lift Control in action. The L-1011 is my favorite plane of all time. The Rolls Royce motors are music to my ears.

  • Brilliant footage...including a nice look at AMY- the DC-8-62 pictured at the ramp.

    Thanks!

  • smoooth...

  • Nothing flew like or flys like the L-1011 Tristar. I flew for 30 years on business and pleasure. It was by far the safest most comfortable, and could handle turbulence like riding in a Rolls-Royce. For some reason I always felt extremely safe in a the Tristar. I am sure it was all psychological, but it was good feeling.

I would put it up there as one of the best planes ever designed. Now we have Airbus's that are like flying in a model "T" Ford.

  • Damn oil prices, or it will still be flying. Shame for the production of the L1011 was a "failure" or insufficient demands. :(

  • Not just an L-10, but 4 of them.

And an active DC-8 as well.

This video has amazing superb clarity.

Are you sure it's from 1993?....Wow!

  • The l011s: One arrived from SAN, the other from LAX. On the other side, One ready to depart for DFW and the other to ATL. The DC-8-61 was ready to go somewhere in the Marshall Islands.

  • I think it is the most comfortable plane, because you have leather seats and personal screens.

  • flew the 1011 from ohare to vegas on ata charter and it was the best plane i have ever been on! i miss that plane...

  • smoothest landing i have seen or heard on youtube lol

  • Right on! The only clue to the touchdown was the spoilers deploying. Amazing.

  • Look how much open space there is in Ewa Beach lol. Now its all subdivisions.

  • i wish i could've flown on the L 1011

  • Much better than the MD11 or DC-10. Love that spoiler action on the descend. 1st aircraft to use the Rolls Royce RB211 engine. Now used by the 747

  • I like L-1011!!!

  • i was here last week!

  • Those flaps look disgusting, not as in dirty, but they look freaky

  • This video was made on my 18th birthday, when I graduated in MAY, by AUGUST 1993, I flew home on a Royal Jordanian Airlines L1011-500 from Chicago O'Hare to Amman, JORDAN via Amsterdam for refuel. I am based in Dallas/Ft Worth. I flew DELTA B737-200 to Chicago OHare for connecting flight with Royal Jordanian. It was my 1st International flight.

  • Great Runway 8 left landing...miss home.

  • Excelent video!! I still have the pleasure of flying the good old Ten Eleven as a Flight Attendant. I love this aircraft :)
