i love how you can easily see the genuine affection between them. judy may have completely spiraled down in the latter part of her life but she did a wonderful job bringing up these children.
You guys really need to read Lorna Luft's biography of life with Judy, it tells all about Judy's parents and the men she married and the kids and everything, it's a really great book!
@123victoriamarie I also read her book. FANTASTIC. I loved hearing all the inside stories about the antics that they would do with their mom! I also enjoyed how about half the book is just about Lorna growing up after her mom's death and dealing with her "Shadow".
I know everybody says Lorna is nothing like Judy, but everybody always says that Judy was hilarious, and personally Lorna made me laugh! And she obviously was making Liza laugh, so maybe she got the sense of humour x
I think LIZA just had a certain persona on stage, that somehow, LORNA doesn't quite have ~ Lorna has the smoother voice while Liza was always a shouter - they're both interesting though in their own individual ways.
Its funny how Lorna and people say that she doesn't look like her mom because both Liza and Lorna and her son Joey all have something of there mother in them they both have Judy's big doe eyes except that Lorna has blue eyes and is blonde I guess and Judy had dark brown hair but I personally see something in Lorna kind of looks her mother thats funny that wink 8:08 she says I am so naturally blonde doesn't matter Lorna looks kind of like her mom as does Liza but lorna has her moms nose and eyes.
i love them both just saw lorna at carnegie on 3/11/11 in 50 th anniversary of judy's concert she blew the roof off. some of these comments are nuts of course they had diff dads and of course lorna was not adopted she looks most like her dad

I wish she would act more. A judge on CSI or something like that.. not into her stage act don't think she has it anymore but acting GDam she is funny and good! Come on Liz make some movies!!
@gtrdc that is not true! Yes, she had an addiction problem, and for a very short period, an alcohol problem too, but the only time she was away from them, was when she had to work. Judy loved her babies, and Liza has told many stories of the dear moments she had with her mother. Judy would never just leave her kids!
@gtrdc These two Women and their Brother Joey had their Mother with them as Much as possible. Judy Love for them was very demonstrative. When she wasn't working all over the world to support her family. Judy made the most of her time with her kids. Judy made sure that her kids knew they were loved & Manyy times Judy gave them a choice to go withher on tour and have tutors or stay with their fathers & she would get back as often as possible to see them but she had to work alot.
Lorna is a terrific singer too! In facr she has been described as the true rival to Judy. Check out Grease 2 - absolutely abominable movie, but lorna sings in it and is incredible. Real scratchy, flava type of voice.
I wish the 2 of them would do more together... Lorna was at Liza's side when she was so ill in Florida. Have seen Liza perform over 60 time so far...and Lorna twice.... Hope they team up in concert eventually.
Joey wanted no part of the spot light. Liza and Lorna's relationship was stormy. Lorna was in her Mother's shadow and her sister's shadow. Liza had two very talented parents where Lorna and Joey only had one talented parent. Liza was brought up around creative people at MGM but each have a strong singing voice but neither one of them have the very rich smooth singing voice and technique that Judy had.
@rockabillygirl77 Yes They did. Sid Luft is Lorna's father, A big time producer. Vincinte Minnelli Liza's. He directed Meet Me In St. Louis which Judy Starred in.

@Tumadre520 Amen to that . . . long live Liza! Her performance in Cabaret was immortally breathtaking, a joy forever. She inherited Judy's one-woman-powerhouse stage entertainer talent -- like Jolson, now torchy tour de force, then subtlely, whispersoft ballady -- to hypnotize the hordes. Both consummate artists, great actresses as singers. My opinion is that Liza's talent equaled Judy's, but that debate may echo thru the next centuries.
I love Liza, i could never understand why she married Gest, i recon she married him for a bet. it should`ve been me. Liza i adore you, thanks for sharing your talent for acting and singing thankyou al,
Bullshit. Lorna is doing a new show "Lorna With an L"..her 11:00 ballad will be "Dammit, She Was My Mother Too!".,,,other tunes will include "Me and My Shadow".,,,and "Consider Yourself Part of The Family". You'll laugh...you'll cry,,you'll kiss $27.50 goodbye...what a show.
From what I've heard, Joey Luft was damaged by fetal alcohol syndrome. He is in a special, assisted living situation. Liza and Lorna pay for it. It's sad that Judy could not stop drinking during her pregnancy.
@pstone69 That is very slightly disguised slander. He is a normal person and photographer and likes to be out of the scene. Judy did not give birth to a fetal alcohol baby, and I hope that one of the Garland estate people sees your comment, looks you up, and sues your ass off.
Speaking of Joey Luft never being mentioned or interviewed, the same can be said of Minnelli's other sister Tina Nina Minnelli. Why no mention of her? Did she request to be left out to maintain her privacy? I mean she (Christina) is also the daughter of Vincente Minnelli. I doubt many people even know she exists. I'd like her perspective of things. Or since Tina is not the daughter of Judy Garland, does that mean she doesn't even count? Just asking. Anyone know?
Liza speaks exactly like her Mother...Lorna is a little more brazen, I adore them both equaly though, and not just because they are Judy's daughters, I love them because their both unique.... =)
I agree, it would be great to see things from his perspective. I think, though, that he's made a conscious decision to remain private, so...I mean, he's got more than every right to, but it would be nice to hear from him. :)
@bsw3222 Joey was in a Liza concert recently. He, unlike his sister Lorna, doesn't like the spotlights, and he doesn't live off his mother songs. He's a very nice guy.
@bsw3222 The three have done an interview together but I was so young when I saw it that I would have no idea how to tell you when it was. I remember them all sitting on a couch talking about Judy. Sorry I couldn't tell you more but I just wanted to let you know that they have.
Excuse me, but just because a person observes something, and has a strong opinion about it, doesn't make them"ignorant" or a "blowhard".We forgive children for believing everything at face value, for they don't have the ability to form nuanced thought However,.Adults that never question what they're told,....frighten me! Since I assume you are not a close, personal friend of Ms M or Ms L, Id say our opinions probably have equal validity.
Its amazing how people can sum people up by just seeing one interview and never personally knowing. Well not amazing but ignorant. Why at this point would they fake liking each other? What is the gain? Why is Liza considered fake for having some ways like her mom. It is natural to pick up characteristics from your parents. smh
It'd be great if you people actually had a frame of reference that encompassed more than this century to talk about. Liza is a treasure, Lorna wrote about how tough it was growing up mostly without Liza due to their age difference. They are blood and the are natural sisters. You critics here are for the most part, inexperienced uninformed blowhards.
At least these two communicate, because the mother is gone, and life ain't so easy without family.
Neither of them is remotely as gifted as the mother, but they each have some very honorable contributions to make on their own.
My hopes:
1. Lorna would shut-up and stop "talking over" liza.
2. Liza would stop the "imitating-a-nervous-Judy" act. It's so obvious & contrived. Even Judy was never that affected. Minnelli was much more "herself" at her peak in 1972.
Vengeance509-Unfortunately, I completely agree with you, and applaud your brutal honesty, because i know it comes from a respectful place. You would think, after all these years in front of cameras, they would be more aware of themselves and their behavior.
Thanks. I think both these ladies are gifted, but find their interview almost shockingly fake. Who are they trying to convince? Themselves, obviously.
I guess it ought to be ideal: the two women both obviously can't stand each other, despite their kudos. I do "get it," though--neither of them came close to the mother's legacy. Minnelli's interesting, but she "peaked" back in 1972, which is very telling, and 'Cabaret' hasn't held-up well. Luft is healthier and the better singer, but clueless.
To be honest, i wasn't sure how to read their behavior, it just seems forced and awkward, as you mentioned. We may disagree about "Cabaret", I still love the movie, but i love your'Tell it like it is" manner.Keep it up!
I don't want to take anything away from either, particularly Minnelli, who achieved success on her own.
But it must've been "ruined" from-the-start, to have been daughters of that kind of mother (no disrespect 2 J.G.)
My take: Liza's voice grates on me, but I think she's one of the great natural comediennes in cinema. Underrated.
Lorna has perhaps a better vocal instrument than sis, but was never as wonderfully "odd." Her legacy rests in being "good to the legacy." Am I making sense?
Complete sense. Ironically, the very movie that perfectly showcased Liza's very unique talent and essence, would be the very thing that would typecast her for life. I find it remarkable, that having watched her mother's life disintegrate before her eyes, that she would make the very same choices that would cause the same consequences in her health, voice, and personal life.....Why would she do that?
Regarding Lorna, for me it's really hard to compare the 2.Her lack of individuality....
I think the younger one had the better vocal instrument (certainly the better "preserved" instrument), but never flitted w/ crowds that would develop her "style"--hence she hasn't got any.
Minnelli', as I said, is one of our most tragically underappreciated comediennes but, to me, a bad singer.
I do agree that she was typecast, however.
Now, if you want a top-notch story, you'll e-me privately concerning a Lorna-show at a "clothing-optional" men's resort in Palm Springs.
I think as their careers failed both of them relied on mentioning their mother more & more to the point where it was just sad and rather pathetic (Judy has been dead over 40 years!)
I think if Garland were alive she would tell them to shut up about her and build careers of their own or give up
@Vengeance509but you always get attacked by loyal fans if you say it - which is understandable
I think as their careers failed both of them relied on mentioning their mother more & more to the point where it was just sad and rather pathetic (Judy has been dead over 40 years!)

It's great that these sisters have become close again after all they have been through. Judy would be happy about that. Lorna has a better singing voice than Liza but didn't go after the spotlight like Liza did. She knows what it did to her mother, so she was a lot more cautious and sensible in her decisions.
She also has some beautiful children. I like Liza as well, but when she was young , she was awkward and mostly looked like her dad.
Well, that's all fine and good, but as he was part of that family, and since they were reminiscing about their childhood, it seems odd to me that he is never included in their stories....ever.I think there may be more to it,than that.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, but let's see if i can explain what I mean, more clearly,. Usually children of alcoholics and drug abusers become very close, becoming their own family within the family. As there were only 3 children ,and Joey certainly went through the same experience as they, you would think he would be included, somehow, even in passing, in their memories of their childhood.I have never, once, heard his named mentioned by either when interviewed.I still find that curious.
Liza and Lorna particularly are extremely protective of Joey. They don't mention him because he has lived a very private life, and the issues that he has had are ones that he doesn't want aired publicly. His sisters respect that and rarely steer the conversation to him. When I've heard Lorna speak of him, it's with great love and affection--but she rarely discusses much about him publicly.
Thank you for expanding on the previous info.Of course his wishes should be respected, but it seems unfortunate, somehow, because his male, non- performer insights on the subject would be invaluable to me, and others I believe, and complete the understanding in the actual family dynamic.Without his input,I don't think we are getting a complete picture.Too bad, really.
I know this program is about the 2 of them, but why is Joey Luft never mentioned....ever! I mean, he is the 3rd sibling, and you would think this would be an appropriate moment to bring him into the conversation, but no.I've never seen him in any interviews either. Why is this?
I think some of the comment you people have left are terrible, especially about Lorna Luft, rude and unkind.
I spent a lot of time with Lorna last year when she toured the UK... she is a wonderful person. She is sweet and extremely kind. each night i'd go back to her dressing room with mates of mine who wanted to meet her and she was fantastic, inviting us all out to dinner and just real fun. I think it's just nasty to rubbish her in this kind of way. She She is a wonderful, generous woman
Difficult to watch how generous Liza is in suggesting that Lorna had a scinitlla of talent. Might as well say that Joe had it as well. Sorry. Liza got in spades and didn't share with her siblings. Judy lives and breathes through Liza...thank God. DNA is sometimes strange that way. Lorna...fuggedaboutit.
@wseabuck neither of them are anything special and their careers reflect that Liza got a few moments in the 70's as Judy's ghost and nothing since and Lorna nothing at all
@grai ...you're half right, the Lorna half. Liza became an icon in her own right, of course to compare to Judy is unfair. It is in fact quite rare for a child to succeed in the shadow of a superstar...see Frank Sinatra Jr. But Liza was a true triple threat like her mother. Her broadway show last year proved she was way more than just a '70's star. Judy died at age 47 with Liza now into her 60's...that is a miracle in itself. Liza, one of the few one name stars.
@wseabuck Liza's career has been patchy at best so I wouldnt say she qualifies for the title of icon She was a good dancer but a limited actress and vocally she was weak to awful (she sounds like daffy duck on speed now and should really stop)
Judy puts the word icon into another league because she was a genius in spite of herself
I dont think Liza Minnelli would have had the little success she did have when she was young if she hadnt been Garland's daughter
Liza is actually a spitting image of her father, but she has a lot of her mother's talent. Awfully hard to live up to being the daughters of the one and only Judy Garland! Liza's performance in Cabaret was brilliant, timeless. I'm just sorry she has smoked so much because her voice is not as robust as it was. I think Lorna does the best with what she has. She's prettier than Liza but she doesn't have the talent, let's face it. I'm glad Liza's still with us -- let's hope for a big comeback.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Lorna luft is such a liar, what a victim. She's saying she was blonde but you can see clearly from her childhood pic she had dark hair. She's also a victim making out she suffered.Liza had the talent and the dignity to carry her mothers name on with grace.Judy should have left lorna at a trailer park or karaoke bar before she got a chance to air all that dirty laundry, honestly or should i say loyalty.....
Had their mother not been Judy Garland both these two would be singing in cocktail lounges.

From what I've heard, Joey Luft was damaged by fetal alcohol syndrome. He is in a special, assisted living situation. Liza and Lorna pay for it. It's sad that Judy could not stop drinking during her pregnancy.
pstone69 1 year ago
@pstone69 That is very slightly disguised slander. He is a normal person and photographer and likes to be out of the scene. Judy did not give birth to a fetal alcohol baby, and I hope that one of the Garland estate people sees your comment, looks you up, and sues your ass off.

She's admitting she cheated on her husband and thinks that is funny?
oldschoolbrawlers 1 year ago
Speaking of Joey Luft never being mentioned or interviewed, the same can be said of Minnelli's other sister Tina Nina Minnelli. Why no mention of her? Did she request to be left out to maintain her privacy? I mean she (Christina) is also the daughter of Vincente Minnelli. I doubt many people even know she exists. I'd like her perspective of things. Or since Tina is not the daughter of Judy Garland, does that mean she doesn't even count? Just asking. Anyone know?

has Liza ever talked about Joey?
or has he ever done an interview? would be great to see him or hear about him for a change
bsw3222 2 years ago 16
I agree, it would be great to see things from his perspective. I think, though, that he's made a conscious decision to remain private, so...I mean, he's got more than every right to, but it would be nice to hear from him. :)
yougottagetagimmick 2 years ago
@bsw3222 Joey was in a Liza concert recently. He, unlike his sister Lorna, doesn't like the spotlights, and he doesn't live off his mother songs. He's a very nice guy.

@bsw3222 The three have done an interview together but I was so young when I saw it that I would have no idea how to tell you when it was. I remember them all sitting on a couch talking about Judy. Sorry I couldn't tell you more but I just wanted to let you know that they have.

what's that crap about not judging other people?
Geekella 2 years ago 2
Excuse me, but just because a person observes something, and has a strong opinion about it, doesn't make them"ignorant" or a "blowhard".We forgive children for believing everything at face value, for they don't have the ability to form nuanced thought However,.Adults that never question what they're told,....frighten me! Since I assume you are not a close, personal friend of Ms M or Ms L, Id say our opinions probably have equal validity.
tet43 2 years ago 4
Its amazing how people can sum people up by just seeing one interview and never personally knowing. Well not amazing but ignorant. Why at this point would they fake liking each other? What is the gain? Why is Liza considered fake for having some ways like her mom. It is natural to pick up characteristics from your parents. smh
missVeemack 2 years ago 3
It'd be great if you people actually had a frame of reference that encompassed more than this century to talk about. Liza is a treasure, Lorna wrote about how tough it was growing up mostly without Liza due to their age difference. They are blood and the are natural sisters. You critics here are for the most part, inexperienced uninformed blowhards.

liza haz her mother's laugh
TheJazzStreet 2 years ago 4
At least these two communicate, because the mother is gone, and life ain't so easy without family.
Neither of them is remotely as gifted as the mother, but they each have some very honorable contributions to make on their own.
My hopes:
1. Lorna would shut-up and stop "talking over" liza.
2. Liza would stop the "imitating-a-nervous-Judy" act. It's so obvious & contrived. Even Judy was never that affected. Minnelli was much more "herself" at her peak in 1972.
Go back to that, Liza.
Vengeance509 2 years ago
Vengeance509-Unfortunately, I completely agree with you, and applaud your brutal honesty, because i know it comes from a respectful place. You would think, after all these years in front of cameras, they would be more aware of themselves and their behavior.
tet43 2 years ago
Vengeance509 2 years ago
To be honest, i wasn't sure how to read their behavior, it just seems forced and awkward, as you mentioned. We may disagree about "Cabaret", I still love the movie, but i love your'Tell it like it is" manner.Keep it up!
tet43 2 years ago
I don't want to take anything away from either, particularly Minnelli, who achieved success on her own.
But it must've been "ruined" from-the-start, to have been daughters of that kind of mother (no disrespect 2 J.G.)
My take: Liza's voice grates on me, but I think she's one of the great natural comediennes in cinema. Underrated.
Lorna has perhaps a better vocal instrument than sis, but was never as wonderfully "odd." Her legacy rests in being "good to the legacy." Am I making sense?
Vengeance509 2 years ago
Complete sense. Ironically, the very movie that perfectly showcased Liza's very unique talent and essence, would be the very thing that would typecast her for life. I find it remarkable, that having watched her mother's life disintegrate before her eyes, that she would make the very same choices that would cause the same consequences in her health, voice, and personal life.....Why would she do that?
Regarding Lorna, for me it's really hard to compare the 2.Her lack of individuality....
tet43 2 years ago
....has always made me see her as a `moderately talented lounge singer...she seems very well adjusted though, and probably a very nice lady(LOL)
tet43 2 years ago
I think the younger one had the better vocal instrument (certainly the better "preserved" instrument), but never flitted w/ crowds that would develop her "style"--hence she hasn't got any.
Minnelli', as I said, is one of our most tragically underappreciated comediennes but, to me, a bad singer.
I do agree that she was typecast, however.
Now, if you want a top-notch story, you'll e-me privately concerning a Lorna-show at a "clothing-optional" men's resort in Palm Springs.
Heh.

@Vengeance509 @Vengeance509but you always get attacked by loyal fans if you say it - which is understandable
I think as their careers failed both of them relied on mentioning their mother more & more to the point where it was just sad and rather pathetic (Judy has been dead over 40 years!)
I think if Garland were alive she would tell them to shut up about her and build careers of their own or give up

Well, that's all fine and good, but as he was part of that family, and since they were reminiscing about their childhood, it seems odd to me that he is never included in their stories....ever.I think there may be more to it,than that.
tet43 2 years ago 2
Not sure what you mean but there is no sinister reason why he isn't mentioned
firefliesuk 2 years ago
Thanks for taking the time to respond, but let's see if i can explain what I mean, more clearly,. Usually children of alcoholics and drug abusers become very close, becoming their own family within the family. As there were only 3 children ,and Joey certainly went through the same experience as they, you would think he would be included, somehow, even in passing, in their memories of their childhood.I have never, once, heard his named mentioned by either when interviewed.I still find that curious.
tet43 2 years ago
Liza and Lorna particularly are extremely protective of Joey. They don't mention him because he has lived a very private life, and the issues that he has had are ones that he doesn't want aired publicly. His sisters respect that and rarely steer the conversation to him. When I've heard Lorna speak of him, it's with great love and affection--but she rarely discusses much about him publicly.
maisonvivante 2 years ago
Thank you for expanding on the previous info.Of course his wishes should be respected, but it seems unfortunate, somehow, because his male, non- performer insights on the subject would be invaluable to me, and others I believe, and complete the understanding in the actual family dynamic.Without his input,I don't think we are getting a complete picture.Too bad, really.
tet43 2 years ago
@tet43 I think he's asked them to let him stay private.

Liza sounds eerily like Judy Garland...
TrooFroot 2 years ago
Difficult to watch how generous Liza is in suggesting that Lorna had a scinitlla of talent. Might as well say that Joe had it as well. Sorry. Liza got in spades and didn't share with her siblings. Judy lives and breathes through Liza...thank God. DNA is sometimes strange that way. Lorna...fuggedaboutit.

Lorna got a huge amount of talent imo
firefliesuk 2 years ago
yeah i agree she does and she's beautiful too :) xx
xxfayerocksxx 2 years ago
@wseabuck neither of them are anything special and their careers reflect that Liza got a few moments in the 70's as Judy's ghost and nothing since and Lorna nothing at all
grai 1 year ago
@grai ...you're half right, the Lorna half. Liza became an icon in her own right, of course to compare to Judy is unfair. It is in fact quite rare for a child to succeed in the shadow of a superstar...see Frank Sinatra Jr. But Liza was a true triple threat like her mother. Her broadway show last year proved she was way more than just a '70's star. Judy died at age 47 with Liza now into her 60's...that is a miracle in itself. Liza, one of the few one name stars.
wseabuck 1 year ago
@wseabuck Liza's career has been patchy at best so I wouldnt say she qualifies for the title of icon She was a good dancer but a limited actress and vocally she was weak to awful (she sounds like daffy duck on speed now and should really stop)
Judy puts the word icon into another league because she was a genius in spite of herself
I dont think Liza Minnelli would have had the little success she did have when she was young if she hadnt been Garland's daughter
grai 1 year ago
Liza is actually a spitting image of her father, but she has a lot of her mother's talent. Awfully hard to live up to being the daughters of the one and only Judy Garland! Liza's performance in Cabaret was brilliant, timeless. I'm just sorry she has smoked so much because her voice is not as robust as it was. I think Lorna does the best with what she has. She's prettier than Liza but she doesn't have the talent, let's face it. I'm glad Liza's still with us -- let's hope for a big comeback.
