There are not opposing ILS approaches on that runway. You may have been on an ILS approach, but the other way is a GPS approach with lateral and vertical navigation (NOT ILS).
You did not mention anything about the chatter on the radio.. if the 747 was told to "go-missed"... you would have heard that. Everyone needs to practice approaches, even 747 pilots. SO, strong evidence that the 747 was never intended to land, he was just doing a practice approach with a missed. Not a close call.
@expalman Well the Tower controller told the 747 to "Go Around" after we landed. When we were cleared for the approaches, the controller stated "In the event of a go around, Heavy 747 turn east, and the Piper will turn west for the climbout"
@kawadude111 OK.. that makes perfect sense now. Everyone was expecting what happened... no-one was surprised. Just as I suspected from my first post, the chatter on the radio told you the story. This was not a close call, not a near miss, not much anything special.. just normal everyday flying. Just very interesting it was a 747 bearing down - - not something you see everyday.
@expalman on piper, all the radio comms goes to headphones not on loudspeaker... so no wonder ATC can't be heard on video, as well the sound quality is not the best..
@HotDog12ist I know that the ATC audio was not in the track. Check exactly what I said in my posts, not what you think I said. "You" in my statements means the pilot with a headset on, not "you" the viewer of the video.
@expalman That would be a very expensive go-around exercise if it had to be done in a 747, practising usually is done in the sim. Kawadude111, you've certainly got some extra excitement for your money.
I don't buy it. If that was really an unscheduled go-around by the 747, you would have heard a lot of chatter on the ATC. No chatter? I think because the 747 was simply doing a practice approach and continuing with the missed approach. Why would the 747 be landing opposite direction? Answer: the ILS approach is in the direction oppisite the wind.
@brp7636 Certainly don't disagree with the fundamental priorities of a pilot as you state, but I don't understand how exactly that applies to what we were talking about in the discussion. Please explain.
@expalman The chatter may have occurred after the video ends. Not too difficult to understand. But I agree, either way it isn't a close call.. but for a lot of people that aren't pilots, flying head on with a 747 within a few miles is a close call.
the small aircraft could of ducked off main runway safely and the rogue jet could of landed safely too.The 747 did the right safe move tho. Thanks peter reminds me of when the instructors microlight on take off ran out of fuel and i had to run with him checks 2nd look found fuel pump off.Turned on wait for pressure engine start warm power up and we just missed some big Tuart trees.Pretty cool day tho.Regards peter
Pilot. In. Command. The pilot is ultimately responsible for making decisions that ensure the safety and success of the flight. Piper, 747, Gulfstream, helicopter, IFR, VFR, doesn't matter. If you are at the controls, it's your responsibility to be smart, not blame everyone else around you, although this is what typical, amateur pilots do. Stay out of the way, or keep your bug smasher outside the Mode C veil, and things will work out fine for the people that actually have important things to do.
@kawadude111 Not important enough to make a 747 on an ACTUAL flight go-around. The flight crew of the 747, the passengers on the 747, and everyone else on the frequency will also deem your training flight as "not that important". Enjoy your laughs when you tell this war story with the other CAP doughnut-eaters.
You get your landing clearance, make a 747 go around, and get to laugh about it with your buddies. Had the 747 been a Gulfstream or any other business jet, you would be making that pilot explain to his boss (the guy in the back seat, the whole reason why the plane is flying that day) why they had to perform evasive maneuvers to avoid a fucking piper, and why they are late for their meeting. And you will wonder why you get terrible service when you park next to the professionals at the FBO.
@XxKLBIxX Actually, that was pretty clearly a Qantas 747-400. I could be wrong on this, but I don't think CargoLux even had the -800i yet, in April. Captain Adlai
@CaptainAdlai No, It's definitely a 747-8F. You can tell by the longer fuselage and the raked wingtips. Carlgolux was due to take delivery of their first -8F in a couple of days but aren't because of some kind of contract issue.
The fact that you continued despite knowing the implications regardless of ATC instructions, combined with the fact that you had the gall to video it and post it on Youtube really shows bad airmanship on your part mate. I pray for you in the future, I really do...
Well the pilot of the aircraft i was in continued on and made the same descision as the 747 pilot to continue the approach right? Whatever airmanship the 747 pilot had seems to be the same as the pilot of my aircraft. Whoever is flyin that 747 seems to have had a long life in the aviation business huh. And i filmed it from the back seat.....you're right...pretty damn dangerous.....
@kawadude111 its not really the same decision cause 1: your pilot continued and 2: the 747 had the go around forced upon them (it was only good airman-ship on their part that they didn't assault you verbally on the ground) but you should understand that at very low speeds and distances a piper aircraft is much more manoeuvrable and economical than a pax carrying 747 its just common professional courtesy. This in my opinion is what gives GA a bad name.
Actually, the carious comments of the uploader about this being a towered APT and it all being the Tower's fault really make me question this pilot's attitude. So you just fly into the path of a 747 because the Tower gave you permission for the touch and go? The decision to continue the touch and go was a very, very poor decision.
@ryanhaart We were both IFR, man. Therefore, the 747 would have the SAME attitude, no? Aircraft size does NOT determine right of way in this situation at all. What matters is that the tower overestimated our speed in the piper in an attempt to get us in and out before the 747. Therefore, yes it is the towers fault.
@kawadude111 As a pilot, you have the right to decline whatever the ATC instruct you to do if you believe their instructions pose a risk. Like ryanhaart said, you should have notify ATC and move away - maybe the 747 should do the same too, but by all means you are responsible for your life.
I cannot believe that the pilot of this Piper is continuing the approach. It is insane. At 0:12 the 747 is already in view on the video and was probably visible even earlier to the naked eye. How a pilot can continue an approach towards a visible plane approaching the opposite runway is beyond me. You should have gone around immediately and made a left turn and informed ATC.

I'm not sure that the decision to continue with a 'touch and go', knowing that there was traffic on final in the OPPOSITE direction, was a particularly smart one.
I had a similar incident, quite foggy, and local ATC (small strip) give me clearance, half way through final i hear this radio call,,, XXXX taxi into position and hold. i think hmm thats strange, anyway look at the runway. there is this Mooney bravo sat there, gees, never shit myself so much
Nice video, I like it.
