you're wrong. They did stay together at the table. It was Michael Mann's decision to shoot the scene like that. You can't give that kind of performance looking at an extra. It's that simple.
It's a widespread MYTH that they didn't shoot that scene together. But I have first hand knowledge that it did happen; the scene was shot at Kate Mantilini in Beverly Hills. I spoke to a waiter that was at the restaurant during the filming of that scene at 4am. He wanted to stay to watch it. They were there, TOGETHER, and Mann wanted to shoot the scene that way, with a camera over each of their shoulders. Also, Pacino stated that Deniro refused to rehearse before that scene.
