  • Taking 8 from 4? Is that how they really did it?

  • Bah. How about E=mc2? If light is the fastest speed how can it be twice as fast at itself? (ha. Got´cha.)

  • Haha, this is awesome XD I think the "new" way makes more sense though... but that might just be because it's what I'm used to doing, being one of these "new fangled" children haha xx

  • FUCK SCHOOLS!!! BUNCH OF FUCKING PRICKS

  • This is nothing new! Abbot and Costella did that a long time ago with 13 X 7 = 28

and they could prove it! lol

  • My brain exploded

  • this is so hilarious :D

he does new math and gets a DIFFERENT ANSWER!

    LOL

  • lol "Lehrer" is the German word for Teacher ^^

  • But subtraction is like the easiest thing in the world! He makes this sound like a complicated system, but I think it's the most intuitive type, or at least the easiest to understand (or learn). Those other methods looked super confusing!

  • @BeNotNormal That's the point of his songs, lol. He's a mathematical genius, but he's also a comedian. Winning combo.

  • funny

  • Well, I enjoyed your video over one of the others I saw. Particularly since it did have the lead up to the song part.

  • I've only ever learned "New Math" but now I want to understand how he did "old math"...looks harder then the new stuff.

  • I think that the old version of math is horrendously complicated. It's not at ALL what you're actually doing.

  • @Gyroglle I don't even understand how it works. I can't get my head around it xD;;;;

  • I was in grade school learning "New Math" (they really called it that) in the early 60s and Lehrer's point *IS* that the Base 8 is confusing, and everyone questioned its relevance. The "paradigm shift" in learning different numeric bases was a high hurdle. It turns out the "relevance" (that was never explained by the schools BTW), was this knowledge is critical for understanding computer memory usage of binary and hexadecimal.

  • Come on, let's do this again in base 8! then base 2.

  • love this video :)

  • I was taught this way when I was in primary school (about 6 years ago) and I found it very simple at the time. Easier than memorizing those damn multiplication tables!

  • I think this way of doing subtraction is better :). It's important to understand how you get your answers

  • I don't think we were taught this way when I was in elementary school, and I'm 19. I think I would have a lot more trouble doing mental arithmetic in my head if that were the case. I can do stuff in base 10, but why you would even bother with base 8 is a little beyond me. I know my parents learned it, though.

  • Lol actually got it :D

  • we allways done this :/

  • @noobyfromhell I don't think that Americans are dumb, there are those of us (of all nationalities) that are challenged! This is actually the method of subtraction that is taught to children in Australia as well.

  • @paulecohen and in holland as well XD

  • @paulecohen and the UK

  • @paulecohen

I know what you mean I was taught math overseas. Everything by hand and no calculators.

  • Comment removed

  • @paulecohen Indeed it is. I use this method because I learnt it here in Aus.

  • @noobyfromhell You shouldn't categorize American's, it's pretty much saying all Asian's are smart or all African American's are thief's and murderers. You obviously do not see me insulting your nationality so why would you do it to mine? ( I do agree that most American's are dumb but please don't put us into one group. )

  • @monkgot45 "American's"... think about it, before you start being a smartass.

  • @limo3000 I suppose my grammar did have quite a few mistakes, but so did your comment. I was simply trying to defend my country. If I said that every person in Switzerland was a homosexual, would you try to defend it?

  • @noobyfromhell how are we dumb?

  • @kittymime You obviously just proved his point by not using proper grammar. He is Greek and he has better grammar than you who is from America. I withdraw what I said in my last comment.

  • @monkgot45 I'm sorry I didn't capitalize the "h" in how but you stereotyping on one person besides were are you from.

  • Comment removed

  • @kittymime Your sentence still had quite a few errors: "I'm sorry I didn't capitalize the "h" in "how". (notice the period.) And "but you stereotyping ( "But you stereotyping" that is just improper all around.)on one person besides were (It's spelled "where") are you from. And I am from The United States of America....unfortunately..

  • @noobyfromhell They are. I'm born in America but I don't think stupid American. I just want to puch some of these "smart" americans in the jaw

  • @noobyfromhell If americans ought to be stupid hehe then how come they are so powerful? (:

  • Even though I know how to do it....he confused me lol

  • whats up paul? you an alien?

  • Interesting. This is the exact method I was taught in primary school. (I'm Finnish and started 1st grade in 1984.) The difference is that it was taught a lot more simply than this! :) We were told to "borrow" from the next column if the subtraction couldn't be done (==the result would be less than 0). Numbers 0..10 were visualized with sets and elements, with addition visualized, but not named as union. Multiplication tables 2..9 had to be memorized.

  • Hmm.. I have this and the full song on my Youtube playlist for Tom Lehrer. This has the intro but bradenmcpherson's has the second "base 8" part. Why cant there be a video with all parts of it?

  • @mabarry3 Check out my reply to you about a month ago! I openly admit that I modified the song to suit my purposes. The whole song has very little relevance to primary school teaching.

  • @paulecohen Ah, yes I saw that and I understand your purposes, I was just generally pointing out that I have yet to find one (I'll check some more today) with both in it, that's all.

  • Where's the full song? Including "base 8"?

  • @mabarry3 Although the Base 8 part is fun, I decided to edit it from the clip. I am a primary school teacher and use the clip to demonstrate how confusing subtraction is for children. The Base 8 part really had no relevance and would just confuse the parents even more! Thanks for watching.

  • @paulecohen I was about to ask the same question, but I can see your point if you are showing this to younger students.

  • @paulecohen When I was in primary school in Texas in the 1960s, we were assaulted with the full arsenal of New Math starting around the third grade, including bases and sets. Your kids are fortunate if they don't have to deal with such garbage.

  • very nice :D

  • I enjoyed your animation greatly. You did a marvelous job!

    Thank you for sharing!
