Before Ingrid Newkirk founded PETA, she worked in an animal shelter where she witnessed some of the most sadistic cruelty toward shelter dogs and cats that the human mind could ever devise. You cleverly omit that pretext from Ingrid's quote to Michael Specter of The New Yorker, wherein she explains how working for the shelter left her shocked at the way the animals were treated: "The Extremist: The woman behind the most successful radical group in America", The New Yorker, April 4, 2003.
