@whydoyouhateonme Nip training is a very easy, 2 rule process. 1) When they bite too hard you scruff them behind the neck and give a low hiss in their face, then slowly unscruff them (do not let them dangle and do not let them go if they swing around and bite, this will encourage future biting) 2) If they nip at your feet or other parts of your body ignore them best you can, if they continue do the scruff + hiss (they do this for attention, so it is important not to give them any if they do it)

Well, the funny fact is (and I'm NOT shitting you here believe it or not) but kissing pets like ferrets, guinea pigs, cats, dogs (yes, even dogs!) on the mouth is a ot more hygienic than kissing a human. Animals are used to eat "unclean" food from nature, so their mouth flora has certain bacteria to prevent infections, illnesses etc. which we humans do not have.

Also they were not just "pets" to me, but more like my own children, so I wouldn't care what anyone thinks. ;)

males (hobs) are best buy far they are more gentle and loving when girls (gills) come into season they have to either bred put with a versectamissed hob or have a hormone injection if they dont have one of the above they will die, plus when girls have their season they can be really moody and sometimes bite

@WinterTwWolf i totally fell in love with my brother and sister-in-law's ferret! they bought him from a pet store, which tried to refuse selling him because he was a biter. but my brother and sister-in-law pretty much demanded him, so they took him home after a few discussions with the pet store people... then they rescued two more and i KNEW i had to have one or some very soon! so i got myself a little sable blaze and named her Aurora. she melts my heart everyday! <3

Actually, baring major injuries, ferrets dont require vet visits any more often than a normal house hold pet. We've had six ferrets, and only one has needed to go to the vet, hes gone twice, once because he got in the couch and caught himself in a spring, and another time when after he got out side for a while and got a bot fly egg. Ferrets come spayed and neutered, so you dont have to worry about that either.

they normally are descented as well.

i'm not sure if every breeder does this, but my ferret is a Marshall's ferret, and when they get their kits "fixed" and descented, they tattoo two little dots in one of their ears to let buyers know the ferret they're holding has had those two operations already :)

Im pretty sure all breeders do that to ferrets, not sure why, but I suspsect its to keep people from starting their own breeding. Ours are all Marshal ferrets and yes, they have the dots.

@foughtwolf You are correct. Kits also come fixed because if a female comes into heat and cannot mate, she will die. Its just how ferret biology works. So to prevent unnecessary suffering and death, the kits come spayed and neutered prior to leaving the breeding facility.

Lu is a boy. It all depends on what you want. Girls tend to be more frisky and curious, boys tend to snuggle. (there are exceptions of course)

@9Ferrets In my experience, it was about even between who was snuggly and who was "let me go"ish. It also depends on how exited they are at a given moment. You are likely to get chomped (play bite) if you try to pick up a ferret doing the "weasel war dance". :-)

Generally speaking I would agree with this, but there are always exceptions. Lu is one of those (for proof check out my Leaping Lu video) and on the female side we have Sabrina who is, for lack of a better word, a princess. If we didn't drag her out of bed she's only come out to eat ... and I swear she's trained some of the younger ferrets to bring the food directly to her so that she doesn't have to leave a warm blankie. :)

That sounds like my ferret Buddy.He's the fat lazy one who stays in his tent while the others play. Ricky is the medium one who is a ball of energy.Coda is the boy who is SUPER skinny. When I let my ferrets run in my room buddy has this spot in a corner wear he likes to sleep. He sleeps on a nice clean wee wee pad. We have the water bowl on the pad because Coda likes to dump it over. Coda hides food under the pad. Buddy doesn't even have to move! He has his food and water right there!H

Personally I'd recommend a female. Sable doesn't bite and scratch like Tachi does. but we raised her from a kit so that may have something to do with it. though she will nip at you feet for attention. but kits are the best time to get a ferret. particularly for potty training.

We own four deaf ferrets. we have found that deaf ferrets are more feisty but act just as normal as any 'healthy' ferret.

Litter boxes. You need to remember that ferrets are latrine animals. Basically what that means is you see which corner they use most often and put a litterbox there. Are they going to use it all the time? No, but it will help. Also, when they wake up or when you wake them, put them in the litterbox and keep putting them there till they are go or 'insist' they don't need it.

We get our ferrets from PJ Pets... and the ones here refuse to get ferrets from Marshall Farms. Check with teh petstores around you that sell ferrets... Great Canadian (think that is the name of teh farm) Ferrets is the ones we have... all healthy so far (including the deaf ones)

Marshal farms are pathetic. I got my ferret from a pet store where they only shipped Marshal ferrets, and he was very skinny and small, like he was too young to be sold. He's fine now, chubby and adult, but I went there earlier today to get him some food and I saw two ferrets that were brothers, and they were either horribly scared or sick, because they were very skinny and did not have any physical activity with me and my mom.
