pere ubu is one of the few artists who can stretch beyond punks limitations. if you know anybody who doubts punks talent you should send them a copy of this, what a fucking scorcher!
Pere Ubu makes me proud to be from Ohio. I grew up in Columbus, and before I moved to NYC I used to perform in Cleveland all the time (it still has a great music scene). We used to playa t the Pirates Cove and I always felt honored, playing the same stage that Pere Ubu had.
...and thank god they've remained something beyond the pidgeonholing sleepy walls of definition. As I lived across the pond, my first impressions of them came with DubHousing, just later getting in hindsight touch with the modern dance.. anyway, it was mental revolution all the same. America's anti-pre-post-modern most well hidden secret for the world to discover...and counting... they're like a prankst cenotaph to the unknown modern rock hero.
4 people need a drug or a final solution? I'm like #389. Hearthan 7" released 3/1976. I drove friend Simon (Kirk D) Agree to record stores (1975-1977) 'n listened to what he played, He had "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" so I taped all 4 sides, late '76/early '77, Final went straight to #1 on my top 45 (I used 90 minute cassettes, 45 minutes a side). Datapanik 10/4/78 for $3.69 then fell into the "Heart of Darkness" that was the 80s, My Dark Ages of poverty in Phoenix. Modern Dance LP 2/20/88 for $2.99.

My favorite piece of music: dense, throbbing, intense, so much sound in such a small space, the best guitar solo ever! David is as always, at the top of form, vocally and lyrically. One of the first songs my kids remember me shaking the house with: stereo cranked full: damn the neighbors!
I was there in Cleveland when Pere Ubu first started playing around town...down in the flats, weird gigs here and there. I had been in some abortively quick-to-die bands with Peter Laughner, but all I knew about David Thomas was that he had been a bouncer/doorman at the Viking Saloon over by the Cleveland State Campus, and we all called him "Crocus Behemoth". Back then, I prefered Peter's Bands, Cinderella Backstreet, The Wolves, even his Blues Band, The Blue Drivers to UBU...
David Thomas from Pere Ubu actually wrote the lyrics for Sonic Reducer as he was one of the singers in Rocket from the tomb. He told Cheeta Chrome that the dead boys could use all Rocket material that they wanted, except for Sonic Reducer, which they did anyway. So he's referencing to his own song in this one. ;)
Sonic Reducer was actually originally written and performed by Rocket From The Tombs which was the band which split both into Pere Ubu and The Dead Boys.

@kiely Sure, Wild Giraffes, Easter Monkeys, Pagans, X_X, Tender Buttons. I never saw the Action, though. How about all the way back to the Electric Eels, Mirrors, ore even Cinderella Backstreet which featured Peter Laughner and Chrissie Hynde for a minute.
De repente, lembrei-me do mestre do post-punk. Sempre bom voltar a ouvir o gordão, mas é mais interessante (e cômico) ver suas apresentações - sempre um show a parte.
@starlight68100 You will find it on the Pere Ubu 'Terminal Tower' compilation, along with this track and a bunch of others. Should be able to get it from iTunes or Amazon no problem.
I lived in Cleveland '77-'78 and was smart enough at 23 years old to spend most Thursday nights at a dive bar in the Flats called the Pirate's Cove. Thursdays were Ubu's night there. They always played and would have a guest band (Destroy All Monsters, DEVO). They were recording The Modern Dance then, so you can imagine how brilliant they were. You'd expect them to play this song for an encore, but much of the time they ignored it altogether and would instead do Sloop John B of all things.
"Of all things?" Come on, Sloop John B is a GREAT song to cover, especially cos it's the worst trip they've ever been on! :)
I used to spend my Thursdays going to see Kreamy 'Lectric Santa and the Laundry Room Squelchers at Churchill's in Miami. But I can't brag about them (yet).
Now I'll retire to be alone with my envious thoughts.
Truly awesome. How many people were there? 20? 40? All scenes start off with 8-14 people, the ideal number for a hunter-gatherer clan of humans, btw. London, 1976, Liverpool, 1962, New York City, 1944, Cleveland, 1974, New York, 1975, Washington, DC 1980. 12 people, give or take.
I played bass in a new wave band in the 80s and we covered this song. A real gas to play and the lyrics are so great! Alot of morons think it's about concentration camps and such.. but no it isn't. We played a gig, opening for Pere Ubu at one of their hometown bars in Cleveland once. We debated before the gig if we should play this but we didn't, wish we had.
This was recorded in 1975, but it sounds like it was recorded in 1979 during the post-punk thing. And even then, they still were the weirdest band around when their first full-lengths came out in 78-79! One of the most influential & unique rock bands of all time, and this to me is their most potent moment on record.
absolutely the most amazing song ever, heard it as a senior in high school and it still stands the test of time. It changed how I heard everything; the beginning of a flood. The best guitar solo ever, must be played at MAXIMUM volume!
Sublime, and dougsha has a good-sounding live concert vid from last year that has Non-Alignment Pact, Final Solution, AND Cloud 149. I'd love it if someone posted the album version of Cloud 149.
Discovered this gem on a Compilation disc. This is, was and will forever be my teenage angst soundtrack number uno. I don't need a cure I need a Final Solution
Mission of Burma was OBVIOUSLY listening to this song when writing "....revolver"! I fucking love Burma though, and they openly admit that Pere Ubu is a main influence. But hey, if you NEED to sound like anyone.......
When I was like..around 12 years old, I went to the library and took out this Post-Punk compilation cd. This song was on it..it was definitely one of my favorites on the disc. Used to listen to this all the time..
I just found out about this band going through a page called gnoosic, you type 3 favorite bands and it keeps suggesting other bands that you might also like.
This is one of the best bands I've heard, I don't think I ever want to listen to music on the radio again because it just can't compare to this.
This perfect single was mixed by Tim Wright, who also played bass and some of the guitar on it. I included it on the Max's Kansas City 1976 compilation album. It can also be found on the Terminal Tower - An Archival Collection LP. Both of these records are also available on CD. A close listen to the lyrics reveals the fact that Crocus's Final Solution has absolutely nothing to do with The Holocaust.
@petercrowley41 david thomas has said he was reading a sherlock holmes story called the final problem and he thought if there's a final problem there must be a final solution.
and i first heard pere ubu in 1980 from the max's compilation. thanks.
@mrblue99 - Thanks Mr. Blue... In case anyone's wondering, David Thomas went by the moniker, "Crocus Behemoth" during the time of the original (and finest) lineup of Pere Ubu.
@m0de absolutely. This song would not sound at all out of place if it were released today. And for it's time, it was radically original. I really can't believe this was released in the 70s; there really doesn't seem to be any point of reference at all for this type of music at that time.
I'm looking at my original copy of the single as I write this (couldn't find a 45 spindle to play it so I was glad to find it here). I've also got "30 Seconds over Tokyo" (their 1st single?).
I knew Peter and played with him at least once back then. Last time I saw him was at the Pirate's Cove (Later called Peabody's Downunder) in the Flats. He never really "got" why I wanted to play jazz (think that was our last conversation before he died).
@Kohntarkosz - the whole track is very much the wild side of Can......ubu were - by admitting themselves in interviews in the late 70s more influenced by Can than a lot else.....
As far as I hurd........David Thomas yanked all vinyl 45 of this genius song because the skin heads came up right after and he did not want any association with them
They (as well as we the listeners) were lucky to have access to a recording studio in '75. This version of the band had only been playing a few months when they recorded this song. They did not have a record label, not yet toured and the production of these songs were as good as most major label bands from that time. They had not even played live yet and they recorded this rock classic!!
@11spike7 - there were two guitarists on it, I think (runs to get single - yes, Tom Herman and Peter Laughner - but I suspect Peter is the lead guitarist/soloist at the end...) (yes, I have the elusive Hearpen Singles box :) ).
Esta version me la envio hace un tiempo un amigo. Me gusto mucho, yo solo conocia la de Peter Murphy, que me encanta, pero esta tiene mas fuerza, mas poder, la de Peter suena algo pop, aunque salva por su magnifica voz.
... I get so excited I always gotta lose it Then they send me off and make me take the cure But I dont need a cure D-dont need a cure I need a final solution Buy me a ticket to a sonic reduction Guitars gonna sound like a nuclear destruction Its seems Im the victim of natural selection Meet me on the other side--no direction! Cause I dont need a cure D-dont need a cure I NEED A FINAL SOLUTION
Frankly, without Pete Murphys version would have passed me aside, it wasn't promoted or anything. Love the original, as well as most of the output of Pere Ubu.
As I recall, the original single was only released on a small label, and only for a brief period of time. Apparently, there was a lot of negative publicity from people who thought the song was about Hitler's "final solution", and hence the song was pulled from release.
Saw them at the Town and Country when they reformed went with Keith Allen, e'd up in the early days when it was soooo pure......lovely night, don't remember a lot; this song and people having sex on the floor in Shoom later....happy days.
Somebody posted this song ( Final Solution ) of them playing it in concert with two drummers and I was blown away! I didn't know at the time that I could've flagged it under my favorites. Anybody know what happened to it? It was a couple months ago and it just disappeared.

I just found out about this band going through a page called gnoosic, you type 3 favorite bands and it keeps suggesting other bands that you might also like.
This is one of the best bands I've heard, I don't think I ever want to listen to music on the radio again because it just can't compare to this.

Me encanta esta cancion, es bastante pegadiza, pero prefiero la version de PETER MURPHY.

Does anyone have the tabs or even just the chords to this song? I'd love to learn it. Thanks a million to anyone that responds.

@m0de This and non-alignment pact, played very loud for a great deal of 1977.
Other fav at the time Wreckless Eric, go the whole wide world

Sounds a bit like Can on the intro.

Some of the coolest guitar ever.
Pete Laughner?
11spike7 2 years ago 5
@11spike7 - there were two guitarists on it, I think (runs to get single - yes, Tom Herman and Peter Laughner - but I suspect Peter is the lead guitarist/soloist at the end...) (yes, I have the elusive Hearpen Singles box :) ).

David Thomas is notorious for taking down Ubu video he doesn't approve of.

Fortunately, a different Ubu is now in charge of video vetting, and he's apparently more generous or at least open to discussion.

Bloody hell, amazing amazing amazing...can't even begin to spew enough superlatives! Punk as f@#k!
The Peter Murphy cover doesn't even come close to Ubu, but at least he has good taste.

Somebody posted this song ( Final Solution ) of them playing it in concert with two drummers and I was blown away! I didn't know at the time that I could've flagged it under my favorites. Anybody know what happened to it? It was a couple months ago and it just disappeared.
