These green hills and silver waters are my home. They belong to me. And to all of her sons and daughters May they be strong and forever free. Let us live to protect her beauty And look with pride on the golden dome. They say home is where the heart is These green mountains are my home. These green mountains are my home.
It breaks my heart too... I am from Lebanon, NH and am living in Pennsylvania now and it just hurts to see where I grew up torn apart.... Seeing my neighbors from the upper valley struggling to put their lives back together. My thoughts are with you and will continue to be.
It tears me up have been unable to get back to Vermont during this time of trouble. Many people who have lived in Vermont call themselves Vermonter's. I have lived in that state-- but not long enough to call myself that----but.. I Love that state..and its people. They are a tough bunch.. I've heard that GOD does not put people to the test unless he knows they are up to it.. Well. they are up to it. I am proud as hell every time I hear about how they are helping each other during this thing.
I'm from NJ and my heart goes out to the good people of Vermont. I've been there many times and am saddened to see roads I've driven on and bridges I've visited just crumbling and washed away. It is especially tragic because so much of the state relies on tourism to support their local economies. This will have devastating long term effects. I plan to return as soon as I can.
To all my Vermont family, know that my heart is breaking for you. I will pray hard that all turns out well, for the most beautiful state in the northeast.
Jim I hear ya. I also grew up in Vermont and it breaks my heart as well to see this devastation. I would also like to say to the Vermont farmer who lost his entire winter crop. We pray for you and your family that there is some help from the state to get you by for the next 12 months. We understand it's going to be hard on you and we hope the tight community that we all once knew and enjoyed is with you all now more than ever.
People saying this was all nothing but overblown hype are ignorant. Trust me, we haven't seen even half of the true scope of devastation yet. Those of us that are up here will be feeling this for years to come. It's about time someone spoke up about the lack of coverage this far north. You people who have been minimizing it should just shut up. Just shut up.
The Weather Channel did eventually post Jim's actual broadcast message here on YouTube with the title "Cantore's Message After Irene". The audio and picture quality are much better in the Weather Channel's video than from my pocket camera pointed at the TV.
He said it well. These people that are being so sarcastic about the weather people and others making a big deal over nothing should look at photos of Greene County, NY where I've been since my childhood. Some towns are completely gone and people are still trapped today. Good job Jim. My heart and prayers go out to you and your home state.
Thanks Jim! You are the best. I love Okemo Mountain, Ludlow Vermont. I have been going skiing there for 44 years and have been sitting at my computer crying at the devestation. Jim you are without a doubt the best weather reporter.
jim, i went to college with you and i also was raised in VT - we're heartbroken for sure. i also know vermonters - we will prevail and while our 300 year old bridges will be gone, we'll rebuild bridges to withstand another 300.
@pamelajaye - I was watching this live on the Weather Channel and was touched by his comments. I just "rewinded" the DVR back a few minutes and recorded it by pointing my pocket camera at the TV - thus the poor quality. It was more important to me to share his comments with everyone who missed them.
I was watching the Weather Channel live when I saw and heard Jim make his comments. It touched me as a Vermonter and I wanted to share his words with those who had missed them. I just "rewinded" the DVR a few minutes and pointed my pocket camera at the TV - thus the poor video quality. It was more important to me to share his words with others than to figure out the technology of how to do it well. Jim was back at the Bartonsville Covered Bridge site broadcasting again last night.
thank you, jim. i'm working in tennessee and my heart has been breaking for 24 hrs+ now, talking to my family and friends in vermont and looking at videos and pics on facebook. you let the country know that the u.s. doesn't end at nyc and boston. going home tomorrow to help clean up. 802 stay strong!
you can tell he is waiting to let every one know about his home state and to bring attention to vermont from the rest of the country. thank you jim for your concern.
The photos are heartbreaking. Seeing all these people, who have made their homes in Vermont for years, getting uprooted in a period of twelve hours. Some friends of ours no longer have a backyard, its solid MUD.
Thank you Jim. As a native of Quechee, my heart breaks as well. I remember when the covered bridge went out in 1973, (my HHS graduation year), from the large ice jams, but this has been much, much worse. :( VT loves you Jim. ♥
I know exactly what he means. Watching from afar, I felt so helpless and it broke my heart to see covered bridges being torn away. Roads being washed out...roads that I have been on a thousand times. Bridges that I drove by every day. It's terrible.
I just moved from Vermont in march and I miss it every day! Those are some of the strongest people in the world. They bend a LOT but they absolutely will not break! I love you Vermont and all of you who inhabit that magical wonderful place. Please know that the rest of the country is with you and we will do everything we can to help!
The passion in his voice when he spoke of our great state, the determination on his face as he spoke directly to us. I am proud of you Jim and I am proud to be a little ol Vermonter. We stand tall like our mountains....
Great....but once again, upstate New York was forgotten about. Entire towns in rural upstate New York are gone, washed away by flood waters. The media has forgotten that there is an entire state beyond just NYC.
Im from Rutland Vermont, and whats a wreck, as of right now there is no way to get out, either the roads are literally gone or bridges are knocked out. i realy appreciate what Jim did here bu informing people across the country and world about little Vermont.
Of course, most Vermonters won't see this for awhile, because so many are without power....and will be for a very long time, we expect. I happen to be fortunate enough to be near an essential services station, so we were only out for about a day.
But there is devastation here in southern Vermont. Devastation.
It's so weird to here about all this flooding through out my state when I look out my window and there is no damage anywhere I can see. My heart goes out to all the Vermonters effected by this storm!
Thanks, Jim. Thank you for remembering us in Ludlow and at Okemo. We love you. Things look a whole lot better the day after Irene. Vermonters are a tough breed.

I didn't know Jim was a Vermonter. I saw the posting of the Barton Covered Bridge going into the river, and the videographer crying as they photographed it. So sad that structures that have been around over 100 years are gone!
im a french teen, i went to vermont last feb and before to leave france i was like vermont sucks but when i got there i thought this state is amazing and beautiful, god bless you vermonters<333 stay safe!!
never knew you were a Vermonter Jim! I am so heartbroken over our beautiful state. I have been out of the state for the past 7 years but I left my heart there!
Jim Cantore is the man... you could tell how passionate he was about what was going on... and as someone who works in tv... NY did get hit hard in some spots... but from some of the videos that have surfaced I think Jim wants to be in Vermont covering this storm.
Thanks for thinking of all of us in your homestate, Jim. It's tough seeing all this damage to a place that is normally so sheltered from a lot of the weather (except some big snowfalls at times). I live just outside of Ludlow myself -- I haven't been down there, but it's strange seeing streets I was traveling early this morning so flooded! The bridges being destroyed is rough too. Again, thanks for extending your thoughts to all Vermonters.
im sorry, but Jim kinda sounds like kermit the frog in this in a way...
i hated to leave my house in Irene.Fucking scars ya
