my mam is ONE HUGE elvis fan, so i know most of his songs, and she was 11 when he passed, and she always says to me if she was older she would of married him, haha x
There isn't a song I've heard of his that I don't like. Perhaps it's because I loved the legend and want or wanted to know the man I'd hope I'd love him enough to save him from his sad unfulfilled life. Yes he was smart, intellectual fascinating, beautiful, humble, generous to a fault, loved his fans, performing, life and laughing since his "friends" and family obviously didn't love him enough. I wish I could have helped him I'm a RN. 💋 Ti amo Elvis 💔.
This version of Memphis seems to me to be a bridge between Chuck's original and the Johnny Rivers version Yes Johnny heard Elvis' version but he gave it a more driving rythem than either Chuck or Elvis Elvis still played it more playfully than Johnny as Chuck did even more so just my opinion
Johnny was able to have his version released PRIOR to Elvis' and when Elvis heard Johnnys version he was LIVID. In fairness Johnny Rivers has denied this and said that Elvis "lent" him the recording but anyone listening to Elvis' arrangement versus Johnny Rivers, knowing that Elvis did his version first, would have to agree that they are EXACTLY alike. Elvis was loyal but if someone betrayed him he never forgot it. Take care.
Thanks for sharing! This song caused Elvis to break off his friendship with Johnny Rivers. The story is that Johnny was visiting with Elvis and wanted to hear some of what Elvis was working on. Elvis brought out his copy of the Master and played this song along with others. Johnny was "blown away" and asked Elvis for a copy. Elvis didn't have a copy and somehow Johnny ended up with Elvis' copy and released his version of Memphis EXACTLY with the same arrangement Elvis used
@JeffSchrembs This is Chuck Berry's arrangement, not Elvis'. Just a faster tempo. End of story. Not sticking up for anyone, just stating a fact. I heard Gene Krupa and Elvis stopped being drinkin' buddies after this version too. ;)
Thank God for XM Elvis radio, otherwise I wouldn't have heard such a great, not so popular song by such a terrific singer. Being brought up in the 70's, my parents loved Elvis and I was exposed to his music, such a gift I was given. I remember when he died and the heartbreak that surrounded everyone, something I have not seen repeated in my 40 years. To the younger generation that wasn't as lucky as I, just listen and learn and you also will be thankful for such a great talent!
I deeply respect Elvis and yes, he had kingly power.
However, may I be quick to add that when someone once brought up to Elvis about this business about Elvis being "King" that Elvis distanced himself from such a remark by saying that Jesus holds the title of "King" and not him.
Now, I'm not endorsing a particular religion and I deeply respect Jesus. My point is that sadly this was a tragedy for Elvis having this title--he was just human, after all! How can anyone live up to such hype?
The key is Rivers sounds like he's having a good time, which is infectious. But in Presley's version, he sounds desperate, hopeful... and polite for the nice lady on the other end of the line. Yeah, I over-think this stuff, but.... am I wrong?
I've been obsessed with this song since I first heard it and for years argued that Johnny Rivers nailed it, but this version is the best one by far. Say what you want about Elvis, but he captured this song perfectly. I still play Johnny Rivers' version more, but Presley sells the emotion, the pain, and the hopefulness inherent in this rendition. Be away from your kids for a few months to know what I'm talking about. Rivers rocks it out, but Presley owns it.
shut the fuck up and listen to the song everything always has to be about this is racist and thats racist just listen to the music have a coke and shut the fuck up :)
back in those days it was impossible for a black man to carry out a successful song becasue of all the recism, so its true Elvis copied and sang alot of songs that were already established by black musicians.....hard for some to believe!..but its true!..Chck Berry sang this one first too!!..Black people are talented just not recognized back in the days....frigin red necks!!...lol
Elvis lived alot of life in a few years, raw talent, looks,a special man with a generous heart ,a born entertainer, everybody has their own demons. Rest in peace Elvis
@UnknownAngelNigh What are you talking about? Chuck Berry did this in 1958 and Elvis followed Chuck's lyrics right down to "Marie" When he recorded it I cannot say but it sounds later than 63 to me but Lisa Marie has nothing to do with it unless he recorded it later which is possible but it wouldn't be the first Chuck Berry song sang by Elvis from the mid 50s to the end
although i am a Elvis fan,, and love most his songs, i would have to say that Johnny Rivers out did everyone on this song, his version is by far the best out there,, or in my opinion anyway...
@alkleiza1995 haha, why living in that time? why dont we listen to this good music in these bad times (justin bieber, lady gaga,... Times will change, my friend
@alkleiza1995 I was fortunate; I did live in those times. I was a teenager in the mid-fifties. AWESOME time!. In South Africa all we had was the audio recordings and the odd movie (no TV). But just with those we got to know the singers of the time.
@jt123egypte I disagree. Been Listening to Berry's version a few times here on You Tube. Berry's inst much of a singer to be honest. He is so irregular with the tempo he is singing the song in, that actually it doesn't inspire me at all. Too bluesy for my taste. Ans the way he sings it lacks emotion. This does not mean I think Chuck Berry is rubish, the man had an enormous influence on rock and should be credited for it.
You are Dutch? Read the book "Muziek van de duivel" from Aspekt publishers. If you want to hear the best version of Memphis Tennessee, according to the people who's knows everything about Rock and Roll, they favor the cover of Vince Taylor on Barclay. Let is be clear Elvis was a great singer but...also he maded recordings that are not 100% quality. I know several singers who are much better, but they did not have a briljant manager...
A notorious drug addict ripping off a true original. The win goes to Chuck Berry! Plus Chuck is a master guitarist, Elvis was a master rip off artist!
@ajturner84 I think Chuck got his royalties, unfortunate for him, this version was never published as a single, becos Johnny Rivers stole it...??? :-D
@Goedhartbros except he could not play a guitar and it was all Clown business, not a real artist. Oh yeah.. he could sing and entertain ! Great clown !
@urkingod he could play a guitar or piano by ear never learned to read music and in the early days he did play rhythem guitar He certainly did not take advantage of his tremendous talent almost from the moment he got involved with movies Being able to sing and entertain? something wrong with that? he could have been more but he was what he was and that was enough
So this is why his voice is studied at universities...even Harvard! :) The most masterful voice in history. I've never heard this Elvis voice before :) He never ceases to amaze me with the artistry of his voice!!! A man of many voices!!!

@celinethequeen5 I agree Chuck didn't make Elvis. I'm sure Chuck was flattered that Elvis who could sing whatever he wanted, choose his song to sing. That is as compliment to Chuck Berry. I love Chuck, his soul sound, but you have to admit Elvis did it better all skin color aside! They respected each other and I think we should enjoy the song and respect both of them!
I saw you are only 40 years old. Chuck Berry was one of the most succesfull black stars of his generation who had a lot of worldhits and before you were born every group in Amerika and Europe and every Rock and Roll star sung songs bij Chuck Berry! Berry was Rock and Roll...said John Lennon, he was right. I don't think Chuck was impressed by a cover from Elvis,Every Rock and Rollstar sung covers of Berry. From Beachboys to Jerry Lee Lewis.
Chuck Berry is a great songwriter and singer, but Elvis' version of Memphis TN is the best I've heard, the quality, voice control and overall production.
"That's my idol, Elvis Presley. If you went to my house, you'd see pictures all over of Elvis. He's just the greatest entertainer that ever lived. And I think it's because he had such presence. When Elvis walked into a room, Elvis Presley was in the f---ing room. I don't give a f--- who was in the room with him, Bogart, Marilyn Monroe".
I'd love to see the look and anger on the Chuckster's face when he first heard this version... More pissed than, say, Keith Richards trying to adjust his amp in Hail Hail rock and Roll.
Funny, without Chuck Berry, no Elvis. You should be gratefull, open your mind to other things! Ofcourse you can prefere Elvis and I understand that but fact is, Chuck Berry is the creator of Rock'n'Roll!
I'm not telling you what to do. It just sounded as if you hated Chuck Berry for what ever reason and I was just reminding you that without Chuck Berry, no Elvis.
Just an advice (not an order -.-), don't swear like that, it makes you look like a complete douchebag
Many people disagree with you that Chuck Berry created Rock'n'Roll! .
CB is a nigger. Elvis is white. Elvis united black and white music.
"That's my idol, Elvis Presley. If you went to my house, you'd see pictures all over of Elvis. He's just the greatest entertainer that ever lived. And I think it's because he had such presence. When Elvis walked into a room, Elvis Presley was in the f---ing room. I don't give a f--- who was in the room with him, Bogart, Marilyn Monroe".
what a catchy little gem of a song...........cute lyrics too...
i wish music was still more like this, recorded with real instruments and not drum machines and sythesizers, sun with digitally UN-altered voices.....
Parkowski, So Elvis never wrote great songs? BFD.He was still a talented and great singer and performer. Streisand, Sinatra, Caruso, are/ were great singers who never wrote songs.
I,m so tired of this never-ending discussion about Elvis and that he did'nt write his songs. I can't see the problem. Could he has been a better singer if he wrote his songs himself? I believe not. No,that's just a bad excusion because the fact is that he did it better than the original artist for the most of the times. Not always, but he really was a genious.
Are you a musician if you write songtext but cant sing them because your voice sounds like SHIT?? And someone else with better voice must sing your songtext?? NO!! Then you are a writer but NOT a musician...!!
This is like the metal of the 60's...next to 'clean up your own backyard', this is one of my absolute faves!!! I like the bluesy elvis, like in Cry like a baby and Hard Luck (which is a huge recommender as well :) )
WOW! This is a wonderful song & a wonderful job you've done on the video! EXCELLENT! I added it to my Elvis playlist! Also put it up on my Favorites for awhile! LOVELY! Red
At the time Elvis recorded this he had no way of knowing this song would become a self fulfilling prophecy in his own life. He even named his daughter Lisa MARIE.

When Elvis walked into a room, Elvis Presley was in the f---ing room. I don't give a f--- who was in the room with him, Bogart, Marilyn Monroe".

A song is composed of 3 parts:
The writer writes the songtext
The composer compose the melody
The singer sings the song
Who the musician???
In music history the composer is the"musician". The singer is the singer.
Both the writer and composer can have personal voices that sounds SHIT
ELVIS IS SINGER!!!

I'd love to see the look and anger on the Chuckster's face when he first heard this version... More pissed than, say, Keith Richards trying to adjust his amp in Hail Hail rock and Roll.

I dont give a FUCK about Chuck Berry.
I have heard him and his nothing more than average...

Funny, without Chuck Berry, no Elvis. You should be gratefull, open your mind to other things! Ofcourse you can prefere Elvis and I understand that but fact is, Chuck Berry is the creator of Rock'n'Roll!

You shall not tell me what to do asshole.
Ypu sound like MJ fan who cant accept that not everybody like MJ. You must like MJ! You must like CB!
Chuck Berry is ok but I lke the Elvis voice and person MUCH more...
MrErikros 1 year ago
I'm not telling you what to do. It just sounded as if you hated Chuck Berry for what ever reason and I was just reminding you that without Chuck Berry, no Elvis.
Just an advice (not an order -.-), don't swear like that, it makes you look like a complete douchebag
burt2800 1 year ago
Many people disagree with you that Chuck Berry created Rock'n'Roll! .
CB is a nigger. Elvis is white. Elvis united black and white music.

what a catchy little gem of a song...........cute lyrics too...
i wish music was still more like this, recorded with real instruments and not drum machines and sythesizers, sun with digitally UN-altered voices.....

There are many great writers who can't sing, the two compliment each other. To say Elvis was a great waste of talent is moronic.

Parkowski, So Elvis never wrote great songs? BFD.He was still a talented and great singer and performer. Streisand, Sinatra, Caruso, are/ were great singers who never wrote songs.

elvis was a great waste of talent. great voice, couldnt handle it all. and he never wrote any songs so he wasnt a great musician.
Parkoski 2 years ago
No, he was the greatest artist - ever !!!
That's why he's called "The King"
bassfeile 2 years ago 2
i disagree. he had a beatiful voice and was a great talent, but artists create.
He never wrote his songs, would da vinci have been an artist if he did 'cover paintings' of other peoples paintings?
I definatly wont argue how just one man had the entire world amazed and that is special indeed.
Parkoski 2 years ago
I,m so tired of this never-ending discussion about Elvis and that he did'nt write his songs. I can't see the problem. Could he has been a better singer if he wrote his songs himself? I believe not. No,that's just a bad excusion because the fact is that he did it better than the original artist for the most of the times. Not always, but he really was a genious.
LPM1254 2 years ago 2
you can only say that he isn't a great writer...but...he was ( is ) a greeeat performer...a great artist..then a great musician....

Did Jesus write the Bible? Well...
Was there any better communicator of the Word?
Same deal here. This "Elvis wasn't a writer stuff" is a red herring, as much as the "he stole black music" crap.
Do you think people bought records thinking "Wow, what a great Leiber and Stoller song?" No, it was ELVIS, the PERFORMER, who was the reason.
Elvis will always be King because he could sing anything--rock, pop, country, blues, religious, even semi-operatic songs--with real conviction.

dude, jesus is a fictional character.

Exactly !! Elvis was not a songwriter.
Elvis was a supreme singer-a vocalist.
Sean Connery dosnt write the filmmanus
so he is not an actor...blabla
YOU are IDIOT!!!!

Parkoski:
Are you a musician if you write songtext but cant sing them because your voice sounds like SHIT?? And someone else with better voice must sing your songtext?? NO!! Then you are a writer but NOT a musician...!!
