You listen to this song again and again over the years and it always brings back memories of your life. But then there is this moment in your life when you start to realize that there are things you can't buy: family and friends. The point of view changes: you're not the young guy singing that song anymore - you became the old one listening to it and if it is not to late, you should drop anything, follow your heart and go for family&friends.
6 days ago, my grandad passed away at the age of 77, he was the most influential man ive ever known, to battle TB since he was 24 and cancer since 1996. to battle it all, he was a plasterer for 50 years. I quit my job yesterday and went to 30 plasterers in my town and asked to work for free, Im now unpaid, But im doing what my grandad did. Eventually, I will make him proud, if i end up half the man he was, I ll be a damm good person. THANKS GRANDAD LAD! love youxxxxx
There should be an I love thumbs up for this one...He's like a great aged scotch, every sip is a different sensation, a different depth, a deeper flavor.
For all the sons (and daughters) who have fathers both present and past, put all the troubles you have aside and as Neil Young says, have your old man take a look at your life, and you'll see he's a lot like you
My grandfather died when I was 7 years old... Here I sit, 24, and I think of how I am. How I am a photographer just like he was, I'm as tall as he was, I drink black coffee just like him, I put family before everything else, I love everyone I meet just as he wanted me to. I wake up and think "What can I do today to be half the man he was?" Thank you Neil Young for helping me remember who I am, and what life is truly about.
@MarioMaster1979 I love reading comments like these, where people express what I song means to them. It just goes to show you how powerful music can be. This song means something to me but I just haven't found that meaning yet. One day when I'm an old man, I believe it will all just come to me, just maybe.
@MarioMaster1979 My story is very similar. when i listen to this song it bring back memories of my late grandfather and i cant help but cry a little. crying from sadness and happyness. There needs to be more positive attitudes like yours Mario. thanks for you beautiful post.
I just turned 57, and when this was a radio hit I was 16. I'm still that young man, rebelling against older authority....I'll always be that 24 year old guy.
i met a guy, that they just hired into my work, he sais he hasnt seen his daughter since she was a baby, sais that he had to divorce his wife because they just were to young, and now, i asked if he talks to his daughter, he said no, she lives in texas with her mom, i dont know all the details, i have three of my own and no hell on this earth can keep me apart from my babies, there just no way i could ever let them live in doubt of my love, old man look at my life, im nothing like you

OH BOY! Played a long list of happy Hippie tunes & thought I blocked this. To many tears in the memory's . A life time of hearing this & the relationship with my old man always comes out I guess. It became, It means EVERYTHING to mean something to YOU. Old man & young hippie meet in the middle, became two grown MEN can laugh NO MATTER what.I have evolved into a bit of an old Hippie with a lot of my OLD MAN'S character etched in to it. RIP DAD Rick
Alone on Christmas eve! song keeps popping into my playlists? RIP DAD . Life is short make it count.Look at how the time goes past. It means everything to mean something to you. Peace. Rick Wichita Kansas
@Piannnnnno Yes merry Christmas to you as well. Have a great day. Rick Wichita Ks. via western slope Colorado
In the recording, before he started this song, he admonished someone for taking photos because 'the clicks are out of time'. then listen to the precision as he strums. Like a metronome. He's the only one I've ever heard play that clawhammer picking or whatever it's called. Brilliant.
This is the real music. now the music's lyrics like, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez and Taylor swift use the almost the same music tones. i think the 60's to 80's musics are the best.
theres nothing like good old old school tunes people who worked and lived life in the old school ways hade it much harder then todays so called bands but some do sing with feeling and heart back in the old days cold not ask mom or dad for money to sing not like todays world.I love old school rock
A true troubadour. Musicians with this level of talent have always been rare, and sadly, it seems at least for the moment, are becoming even more rare. Such a shame that in 30 or 40 years, there are going to be a lot of people that have never heard of artists like Neil Young, The Allman Brothers, and Eric Clapton. Such a shame.
@Levering87 People will always turn their kids onto artists such as the ones you named. I'm 20 and the majority of the music I listen to comes from the 60's, 70's, and 80's, mainly because of my parents' influence. As for these types of talented musicians becoming more rare, I don't think that's the case, I think the recording industry looks for something different now than they did back then. Then they were looking for talent, now they're looking for brands. All about $.
49 people don't have a clue as to what real music is, thats their loss . They will never see or hear anything like Neil Young again. It takes a lot of courage to get up on stage, no backup band, and just bare it all and make this kind of music .
The era of Neil Young listeners dont' go on YouTube to give a thumbs up on a video. They are too busy raising the grandchildren of the future... the ones that ARE on youtube voting on Beiber videos. Dont sweat the small stuff. Neil Young paved the road.... Beiber Barely rides his big wheels on it.
@des519cgs506 You hit the nail on the head. Neil Young is pure beauty. I heard the studio version of this last night on the radio, and the haunted, slide guitar half-way through the song gives me chillls. It reminds me of my childhood, driving through the Owens Valley, gazing at the flattest prairies leading to the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. That's how brilliance like this can have euphoric effects like mine on others, in this troubled world. Aloha and Happy New Year.
@des519cgs506 well said. This is coming from a 20 year old... I really regret my birth being so soon. If i could make one wish, it would be to have been born near the time when music like this was in it's glorious era!

God bless you Michael Jackson. Over the years old man has always been the best that he's done. R.I.P the king of pop, and such a wonderful song he did
Christ, shut the hell up. Way to over dramatize. The reason for that is modern marketing tactics. Neil Young and artists of his era didn't have the kind of commercialism and media that we have today, let alone the Internet. Plus, this artist has age against him where there's millions who would love this song but aren't aware of it since it isn't as new. It isn't the end of the world or humanity, just a sign of the times.
God I wish I was Canadian! Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, you folks are blessed. As for this song, well I have a tortured relationship with my parents, need I say more ....
@ArcticeSports Neil Young is alive a kicking at 65 and he's still touring. This Canadian Icon that's in the Rock'n Roll Hall Of Fame "twice" is doing what he does best, playing his great music so next time you hear Neil Young's music you'll know his music will never die..

@klinga8 justin bieber is has talent he is a homo but he can have talent
jeremywells1977 2 weeks ago
@klinga8 yur comment is talking about him, so it's kind of hypocritical when ya think about it
thewesleyapples 2 weeks ago
@thewesleyapples kind of hard avoiding when making his (good) point. What do you propose, that he call him "the-kid-who-must-not-be-named? instead"

@fullboxxskater

@DaedalusReturned It's funny that you used the word christ and hell so close to one another
