@HDXFH Generally anything European, Jap, American or some Taiwanese machines are good.
If i had to go new, and on a reasonable budget ($10,000 bracket) I would look into Taiwanese makers (I don't know any off the top of my head) but avoid China all together. its like buying a car. the big flashy $100,000 Japanese or German lathes are fantastic machines, but only big-time machine shops can afford them.
buying used is often good, but like cars even the best lathe can have hidden demons.
@douro20 I wouldn't say either brand is very nice by production machine standards, but they are a great affordable way for a hobbyist to get his first machine tools.
hell it'll be years be fore I replace my Chinese stuff with real quality machines
@mattyvt93 I might sell some of the more common engines in the near future, I'll see how my storage improvements work out, and how much time I will have to restore them.

If its a Bridgeport clone, its probably about the next best to a real Bridgeport.

how lucky are you, looks like a decent drill too

@HDXFH their just a glorified drill press IMO, but you can mill soft metals with some accuracy on them
its a $2300 machine new, in the state this one is in, about $200

Jet also makes a very nice mill. My school has one with a TECO VFD on it.

Will you have to put a single-phase motor on that Hafco machine?
douro20 1 year ago
@douro20 nah, I'll wire it for 240 - 3 phase and use the inverter drive.
