sorry...but that sucks...this is somehow boring...and the play wrong...they don't really follow the changes...they are playing the melody in different keys (three, no four times)...and the are just wank around...they don't listen to each other...it's just noise...sorry al and larry...no me gusta! ugly, ugly, ugly
@neilraoufsw could'nt help but notice that this was done about 24 years ago. About when you were born. If you don't like this fine but save us your critique.... and the melody thing is called harmony like up a m3rd etc. And yeah they are show boating but these guys made acoustic guitar exciting and you probably have an easier time getting a gig do to guys like Coryell who broke new ground and opened ears.
Nice video...The audience is chilling out, having a few beers, smoking cigarettes...You do that today at a jazz concert, you will be kicked out or arrested.
yeah, Al is a great jazz player, blues player, love his walking bass lines, the way he plays a ballad, the way he splits the octave, his intervallic playing,.... just kidding. Al is a fine player and plays his music better than anybody else. But to ramble on about how al is better than all other guitarists; have you thought of doing a stand up act? Comedy aside you are partially correct Al was heavily influenced by Larry. There in one greatest guitarist/musician.
Larry was Dimeolas teacher in a way, but now Dimeola has outran every guitarist on the planet..he's toooooooo perfect..and way faster, accurate, articurate and complete in every way...but as they say there's no arguing on the taste...just expressing the opinion...another perfect guitarist in his style is David Gilmour from Pink Floyd, but that's another story :)
Larry Coryell(and this is is true,Bruce Springsteen too)set a goal to be the fastest guitarist on Earth. The fastest is John Mc Laughlin,The second being Al.The third is Larry.I base this on not how they are recorded, but on how they perform live, and having seen John McLaughlin both acoustic and electric what can one say?Al is always fun,and he knows,Larry knows, perhaps too much,Birdfigers is an attempt.
@69MC97gc there are many things to say. How about do you split the octave when you go fast? or are you playing intervalically when you go fast ? Or how about we just not worry about speed and just concern ourselves with what the artist is trying to say.
@69MC97gc , there is no nice way to say this, but your comment sounds like someone just saying something to appear to have an opinion. This is art, not a sports event.

name calling is the last resort of the 2 digit mentality. i question if you make these remarks to someones face. there is only music you like and why you like something realy doesnt matter. there is no such thing as good ar bad. just do you like it to justify your opinions is to question your belief in yourself so be nice and grow up
HEY...can we all just get along?? I wrote Al a letter from my high school homeroom (1978) and guess what? he personally answered it with his actual signature. I know that because he addressed specific questions and personally filled out the envelope. Pretentious? i don't think so.
That is funny. You are a typical 21 yr old UTUBE commentor know it all even when you have done nothing in real life.
You have seen thousands of videos-that does not make you experienced.
I have met him and Larry.
Young punks with no real life experience are starting to make me think about the good old days before chat rooms and blogs defined the intellect of the average person.

I'm not saying Al is bad. I'm saying he frequently suspends good taste for flash. I hope your vast life experience allows you to discern that much.
I didn't think that Al dropped the ball with his accompaniment. As a matter of fact I liked the change of texture at the beginning of Larry's solo, their interplay at that point made for an interesting transition. However, I thought that Larry's solo ideas were much more satisfying. More imaginative, more prolific, more variety.
i have to say, this was an incredible performance of a jazz classic. the video would have been even better, in my opinion, had the cinematographers and film editors focused more on the musicians than everything else going on at the concert. i mean WTF??? these guys were doing some phenomenal stuff... that got left on the cutting room floor because somebody wanted to show that they could cleverly place video in the photos of a newspaper that a guy is reading. puleeze!!!...give me a break!
Whenever I see video comments, why are there arguments about who does what better? Larry Coryell was playing like this at age 20 when Al Dimeola was age 9. Check Wiki bios. Dimeola is a fine flamenco and spanish style player. They are both masters in their own style. I saw Coryell live and talked to him in Portland OR a few years ago. Amazing diversity and espcially in strange jazz chords like no other. I also talked to Ralph Towner about the group Oregon backing Coryells Restful Mind. Wow! -MS
That's why Al Di Meola is one of the best, and Chick Corea is the best Jazz player in the world !!!! He is making some of the msot beautiful songs of the world !!! Only masters.
Larry Coryell doesn't have the chops that Al Di Meola has, but his solos are creative and intricate. I've seen him live, and he really is a very interesting player. He finishes with such energy here; his solo isn't a bunch of pointless wanking.
Agreed. Larry's a musician. Al's a technician. It's really hard to understand why after all these years Al has yet to have something from the heart, something worthwhile to say other than "see what I learned in school today?" I'd rather read Shakespeare than monkeys on typewriters or Robert Johnson than robot "music" too.
I hate this tune...It's like the "Sweet Home Alabama" or "Hotel California" of jazz. "Spain" was played to death by 1980. I'm REEEAALLY sick of it now.
Just goes to show you that even the most lyrical, smart, and intense players like Coryell, can fall under the spell of competitive wankery. But boy it sure looks like they were having fun!
Larry's the better player. Listen to his comping. Listen to the harmonic complexities of his solos. Al's playing is much flashier, but Larry's solos are much more sophisticated. Al just does the same stuff over and over again on all his records.
I think Larry is the better player ,technically. He takes more chances, goes off on tangents and comps great !But something makes me like Al more..Maybe it's his style and flash...??
larry's better. i like them both but ive always thought of al as being a little too "scaly" sometimes...he might be more technically proficient than larry but that isnt what music is all about
I agree, off-beat clapping is terrible, and it is almost always incredibly off-beat. Luckily this crowd gave up at a certain point, sometimes they just keep on going forever!
This version is just awful.. For a real musical version of this piece you should hear Paco and John play it at the Friedburg concert in 1987. That's really something else.
You don't like the country, get the hell out of it. Looks like you make your living here, like American music and too make fun of farting imams.... Hmmm... yeah, go back to your fare land fool
It is amazing that great American musicians much more appreciated over seas than in their own land, that alone proves that education level of American society, keep wearing your jeans below your ass that just suits you..
Ahh but these great musicians are a product of our uneducated society...And im sure in 10 years most of your countrymen will be wearing their jeans below their asses long after the youngsters here have moved on from that
The USA education now is not the best, even poor Countries have better education, they have the luck of living on a Country that have a great economy based created by their people from a time were they had great education... But now is ridiculous bad... But that is not for everyone who lives there.
wow, they massacred that. totally not up to their standards. and coryell, leave out the bends, man! this version is so cold and it has no heart or subtly, no delicate touch. john and paco's performances of this piece are far superior.
Maybe far diferent but not far superior, why would you say is superior, i think you may play guitar our something, but you don´t realy know what music is...
al's not really a walking rhythm player like Coryell, that's why he sounds a little thin while Coryell plays lead, but their styles do complement each other and they have rock and roll heart.
They add in an extra beat before the G maj7 at 0.15 0.45 ...I'm not sure whether they do it on purpose

Al Dimeola was very young when he developed a reputation as a flashy and egocentic gutarist.
He is so past all that now and has been for a long time.
I suggest that anyone who loves great music to see him perform. He will take the time to sign autographs and visit/chat with everyone that wants to.
He is a great man.Very rare.

I used to listen to Al and Larry when I was 17. Now I'm 47, they are still unbelievable.--carlo salcedo

How can one say Al is not a good player? He is excellent! May not be what you want to hear.

You're really good at not making generalizations.

I won't stereo-type 300M people, that would show a lack of depth and a wealth of stupidity, but I will evaluate you individually as a fool.

Like music is a competition man, do you think guitar playing is a sport?

no.

wow, they massacred that. totally not up to their standards. and coryell, leave out the bends, man! this version is so cold and it has no heart or subtly, no delicate touch. john and paco's performances of this piece are far superior.
dazedandconfucious 4 years ago
Maybe far diferent but not far superior, why would you say is superior, i think you may play guitar our something, but you don´t realy know what music is...

I never heard Larry Coryell play this fast on the recordings he made during the sixties. Could he play like this back then too?
SevenCircles 4 years ago
I didn't mind it overall, but there are a few kind of gross moments. Judging by the crowd's response, they didn't care much for it either...
Podestacide 4 years ago
al's not really a walking rhythm player like Coryell, that's why he sounds a little thin while Coryell plays lead, but their styles do complement each other and they have rock and roll heart.
