There is no date of the concert anywhere on the CD or its booklet. In researching this I did find reference to the date of 1980. I was thinking more of 1988, but then I read that Freni who was married to Leone Magiera, the conductor here, divorced him in the early '80s. So....I'm still not sure, but I will continue to look.

Such an easiness in Freni's singing, but Pavarotti doesn't match Schipa,from far,though he's excellent.

It depends how you look at it, Pavarotti's voice was much more beautiful and full, but Schipa had the edge on the pianissimo notes.
It's not a case of 'matching'.

Sure, Pavarotti's vocal texture is more appealing, but his rendition, taken as a whole, is inferior to Schipa's, though, once again, first class.

I love this opera, especially this duet. They make the perfect Fritz and Suzel. The 1969 recording of this opera is one of my favorites to this day.

I agree. And you know I have their studio recording of L'amico Fritz" and I actually prefer this live version of the duet to their recorded version!

I also had a live version with Gianni Raimondi and Freni at La Scala in 1965 or 66 - excellent !
