Wait till I tell my sister what I just found on you-tube...Nancy Wilson giving a guitar lesson on Mistral Wind...I'm a little proud of myself, I figured some of it out. Heart is the reason I started playing guitar. My dad bought me a 12 string for my 16th birthday back in 79. Thanks Nancy...I'm mesmorized!
I just want to say i think it is really great to see nancy doing a guitar lesson .i love her music and she is just a beautiful down to earth lady, one in a million!! i could only
dream of ever meeting someone like her to play music with.. maybe in my next life!!
Im so happy to find this. A guitar lesson from Nancy Wilson. OMG She is so adorable. I LOVE HER LAUGH. I could listen to hear talk all day. Fantastic guitar player and sweet lady. She gets better with age.
Again, another Heart song I love and have been playing but differently. Sounds SO much better now. I've been trying to find a lesson from her on the "Crazy On You" intro.
I truly love the guitar in Mistral Wind. It is why it's one of my faves.... the notes are so odd but they seem meant for each other and sound sooo good :) Haunting...passionate song <3 Nancy<3 she's too cute.
She seems like a very sweet woman. I could listen to her all day and trust me, I don't play guitar and I have no idea what she's talking about. Peace :)
One of THEE coolest Heart songs to date. Interesting how i know ALL the chord names/theory but could never come up with anything nearly as interesting!
I love how half the time she doesn't even know the chords or notes. So many players now can play a hundred notes a second and know every note, chord, and phrase...but hardly any of them can play with the feeling and innovation of players like Ann or others from the 60's through the early 90's. Just my thoughts.
She is so special and unique. She takes what doesn't fit and makes it beautiful. I am amazed at how underappreciated she is. I loved hearing her explanation. don't understand because I do not play music, but you can hear her genius. Thank you.
Is this video from 90's or more recent.. Such a easy going and really nice lady..That era or generation of musicians is so cool and easy to understand..She's probably been playing since the 60's..Strong ass fingers for a woman..She must have wanted to hook up with Page for a jam or lessen by the mid 70's anyway..Id love to here that..What would be missing is Pages fucked up quality..But he'd probably be to fucked up to deliver it..
Nancy thank you so much for taking time to share your thoughts, knowledge, and talent with us! I used to sit in front of my stereo when I was a kid, trying to play a skewed version of Mistrail wind. It's great to finaly learn the proper way it's played. Please share more if you can! Love ya!
I noticed she's using Takimine guitars mostly now. She seems to have abandoned Ovations which is a shame because she looked really cool playing them and she really put them on the map. I bought several just because of her.
She usually plays Takamines now, but I've seen her play a 12-string Ovation fairly recently. I agree that she looked cool playing Ovations and I remember seeing her in Ovation print ads, but I think Takamines sound better.
I have a Takamine-same company makes Ovations. The higher end Takamines have a "woodsy" quality that I think Nancy was looking for. The Bowl-backed Ovations have a snappier, bright tone meant to cut through the sounds typical in Rock bands.

Omg this rules so hard. I wish she'd do another one cause she's the cutest, most relaxing, lucid (and funny!) teacher. I love how she's not totally super down with the chord names/music theory. ALOT of guitarists are like that. They just learn by ear and experience. And sometimes its better to be taught in that loose way so it doesn't get too complicated (like learning a language with Rosetta Stone instead of starting with grammar)
Ah, thanks for posting this. Now I can play Mistral Wind. W00t!
I have so much respect for Nancy and Ann for not only their glory and talent but also that God chose them to stand out so far from the crowd. With Nancy, it's so very clear in all her spoken appearances and here that she is truly a sweet kind considerate and amazingly, despite her beauty and talent, humble soul. Compare her attitude and sanity to say...Courtney Love or Yoko Ono - somehow Nancy has had the eye of the world upon her and remained rather angelic. How can anyone not fall in love?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You nailed it there.
That's one of the things I love about her--her humble, pleasant nature. She just seems so comfortable with herself. Really chill.
Ah, but don't knock Courtney and Yoko. They are just being themselves, just like Nancy is being herself (Courtney is actually very brilliant and interesting). You can't MAKE yourself be that way, you either are or you aren't. And I think it's the goal of all of us--men and women--to be true to ourselves, good or bad. Just be authentic :)

I don't believe anyone is perfect by what society's idea of 'perfect' is (which I suppose is hazy as well) But I do believe people are perfect according to their own subjective viewpoints of what that is.
Perfection is in the heart and soul, and I don't think it would look one way for a man and another for a woman, per se--more like different for every person.

And the only true sin is to go against yourself. I read somewhere that that is the true meaning of that word. Whatever happens, your life is your own, and you are your own judge. Noone else. That's what I believe anyway :)
thank you Nancy!! what I love most about this is that you really did make the song pull the listener from the shore out to sea...truly a mistral wind...

suzylux: Because I have a stalker on YouTube who goes into my Favorites every day and knocks down my comments until they sink into oblivion. It's entirely ridiculous, but it means nothing to me and if this guy chooses to spend his time this way, so be it. I will always have Nancy's gifts, no matter what. Nothing can take that away from me.

suzylux: Yes, but he has multiple accounts, so it's impossible to overcome that. But, as I said, he can't truly defeat me - I will always love the Wilson sisters, and no one can take that away from me! I just got my tickets to see Heart in July. Nothing is going to defeat that. :o)
weird does not mean lack of knowledge. Just weird. Much like if we traded partners. Still human but different. So she is a musical genius, not a schooled nobody. You know there are many out there!
Yes it does. She didn't know what "weird" chord was. That is a lack of knowledge or ignorance. And that doesn't mean she isn't a great player. I always thought she was schooled. Apparently not... Peace

highlife66: I completely understand what you meant. It's almost as if each group can be in awe of each other, and each can learn from each other. I always played by ear and am now finally taking lessons - so when I watch Nancy explain her playing, I feel what I already knew, but I now also have the theory behind it - and so the picture has come full circle. Music is just the most enriching thing, and so many people can share it!
Got all excited and found these free Heart videos and made a bad call. Comments on a few Heart videos about Nancy puttting on a few pounds but was Ann that done it. Just goes to show how old I'm getting, got the two mixed up. You still rock Nancy on your Mistral Wind song, that was great!!!
Hey BacotSia. That is just a harmonic. The one she does here is at the 12th fret. It takes a little practice, but hold your middle finger lightly over the strings at that position over the 2 dots. Lightly down stroke the 1st 4 strings with your pick. D,G,B,&E. At the same time, move your middle finger off the strings. Just be patient and keep trying. You'll get it soon. There's also one at the 5th and 7th frets. They're a little harder to make though. Cheers!
Nancy Wilson, how I love the way she plays. I been playing guitar for about 30 years and I learned from Nancy's playing. It's almost like sounds you never heard from the guitar. I wish Heart would get together with Blackmore's Night.
