You make very fine products, In fact I bought your Walnut Tennor's about a year ago and its sound is just beautiful. Although I lost it in a housefire a couple months ago I am exited to purchase one again soon :)
I love the sound of this instrument however I noticed that it's made of walnut and I'm allergic to walnut so do you know if it's possible to get the same ocarina but with a different kind of wood?
@cheatsensei sweet potato ocarinas are much harder to craft out of wood and corian compared to the clay models of competitors. Materials, such as different types of wood, also tend to bring up the price.
As everyone else constantly tells you on a daily basis you have VERY beautiful ocarinas. I was wondering what "model" this ocarina is and is it for sale?
It's "bass ocarina". If you are talking about the ORCHESTRAL range that ocarina is in an alto range. But ocarinas aren't orchestral instruments so it's OK to call it "bass ocarina"
Lower range ocs take a ton of breath, I've even heard some basses that pros had to breath every couple notes on. It's just because you have to move so much air to play any note.
Oh, I hope my thumbs are not too small! I'm hoping to order a nice cocobolo bass once I get enough saved up. There's something really handsome about it. I love your work, Mr. Hind.
Lately I have not been able to keep many of the sweet potatoes in stock and for sale on the site, because I've been working on custom orders. All are available but there is a waiting list. On the main sweet potato page you can download a price list. Thanks.
Thanks. Actually, the term "transverse" has been used recently to distinguish them from "end-blown" ocarinas. This shape ocarina has affectionately been known as "sweet potato" since the early 1900s. Please, let's not quibble over the name. "Transverse" is a nice descriptive name and may well be the best "technical" term for the instrument. But, it is not the only correct name for this style of ocarina.
you should make limited edition Ocarinas, like just make three with one part of the tri-force(from Zelda) symbols in the middle with runes and stuff surrounding it, those would probablly fetch a great price. Specially made ocarinas with various old world symbols adorning them would be pretty mystical
I can't speak for clay, but for me the bass costs more because it's so much bigger and there is so much wood to take away to get the outer shape and chamber right.
hah, I gathered that after going over a picture of the clay bass ocarinas for sale at stlocarinadotcom
I hadn't realized just how much bigger it really is compared to the others. It makes sense now that they cost so much more.
For that reason I'm pretty interested in knowing what your walnut bass sounds like. I haven't been able to find any videos or sound samples of that instrument, do you suppose you might be able to put out a video sample sometime?
I'm actually making clay bass ocarinas, recently. Check out my videos for some of the home-made ones I have had. My recent video is a bass I'll be selling after a while.
It costs a lot because making it costs a lot, plus the accuracy in which it is tuned, the craftsmanship and labor put in, and the materials used. If I made wooden ocarinas, and were as good at making them as Mr. Hind, I'd be selling them for around the same price.
I haven't tried, but considering how precise the air chamber's size and general shape (As well as the finger holes) need to be, I imagine it would be very difficult to make one that sounds the way you want it.
Also, Mr. Hind makes his instruments from solid pieces of wood, which is more expensive than making them from clay, so it's not something to be taken lightly. But if you have easy access to those materials, you might try finding some guides on ocarina crafting and give it a try.
Wow that is an amazing ocarina! I received your SopD wallnut today, and I am very happy with it! Thank you so much for making such wonderful ocarinas. I'm sure I'll buy more of them in the future =)

I'm not calling it simply BASS. I'm calling it a bass ocarina...which it is. It's lower than soprano, alto, and tenor ocarinas.

yes, but compared to the rest of the ocarinas out there, it's really low.

Yes it is too big for some people...especially if you have small thumbs. However, if you want a low tone, the ocarina has to be big.

@dmfws It requires to be bigger so Its sound is deeper

I've been interested in a Clay Bass ocarina, but finding one of good craftsmanship under $200 (Or even 3-400) seems very difficult.
Are bass ocarinas very low demand, or otherwise more costly to make? What makes them so much more expensive than the usual variety?
