Wow, this commercial sells me on Betty Crocker more than any other modern commercial I've seen for the brand. Can't beat the integrity of this commercial.
Adelaide Hawley was "Betty Crocker" in General Mills' TV ads, and on their "Betty Crocker" radio and TV shows at the time. The "Betty Crocker Test Kitchens" are still in operation...yes, ice cream and "marshmallow topping" does NOT hold up under hot lights when you're filming a commercial for an extended period of time, so that was "lard" {chocolate lard?} and liquid shortnening. That's Verne Smith as the announcer under the closing credits.
Back then there wasn't the deluge of information on cholesterol and saturated fats...yet only a relatively small percentage of obese people were walking the planet. The exact opposite is true today. We know a lot about what makes us overweight, and it hasn't stopped the obesity epidemic.
And the marshmello "right out of the jar" looks like it's from that horror movie 'The Stuff'. I'm sure it wasn't ice cream either - back to good old shortening, spooned out in heaping spoonfuls to stand in for ice cream.
Her husband is dead now so she can bake whatever the hell she wants without his nagging for cake:D
Betty Crocker, I love you....and your'e a hell of alot better looking than Duncan Hines. P.S. a handmade cake from a real bakery would cost about $30.00 today
That cake looked mighty good! I'd give anything to have a slice of spice cake and a tall glass of milk! I'm diabetic, so :( no cake for me. I remember my mom baking cakes all the time! Yum!

She was real, but she WAS NOT HUMAN. The BC corporation doesn't want you to know this BUT IT'S TRUE

I just found out today that Betty Crocker was not a real person. Life shattering? Not exactly, but a big disappointment.

I wish I could compare the mix from back then to the mix from now. They had better quality stuff back then.

I wonder if anyone actually wrote to General Mills demanding their 25 cents back.
BTW: Betty Crocker was not a real person.
