  • The video was helpful, even though we own a Heavy Duty model. It was more involved process, but I was able to figure it out. Others may want a video for the heavy duty model.

  • Thanks for the video. Turned a $25 craigslist find into my new kitchen centerpiece. Keep them coming

  • This video was EXCELLENT!! Thank you VERY MUCH!!... I completed the repair this afternoon. All by myself!... I am a very satisfied middle-aged woman. I know my family will be very satisfied when I get back to baking now. I had not read the comments here before I completed the repair, and had ordered a can of grease, because I was worried that the existing grease would have bits of the old shredded gear in it and that would lead to a future jam up.. Thank you for sparing me expense and hassles!!!

  • This video is good but if you have an old K5 lever mixer you'll see that things are different in your model. Two screws must be removed along with the kitchen aid band.Pry the apart housing after you get the band off.I found it impossible to remove the electrical cord and to remove the pin that keeps the worm gear on.You can purchase the whole bracket with the worm gear. The worm gear in the bracket is about $13 so why bother with a worm gear to get the pin out? Just get the bracket!

  • Occasionally (1 out of 5 startups) my mixer will not start until I manually turn the beater slightly (while power is off). Turn the power on...and it works again. Any ideas what may be wrong?

  • I just got a Kitchenaid Mixer for Christmas. Any suggestions for keeping it in good shape?

  • Very helpful video. Made repairing my older unit Kitchenaid a lot simpler. Ended up replacing the worm gear and assembly. It was only $16.00, and easier to replace than pushing out the pin. It was very difficult to remove. Thank you for the support.

  • where can u get the replacement piece?!?! can u send me a link?????

  • @xoxdoggieluvxox Just enter your model number on our website and you'll find a list of parts for your mixer.

  • Overall great video - I successfully fixed our mixer thanks to your help. A couple of hints for some other users: The roll pin in the tower assembly was no where near as easy to get out (or back in) as the video. Glad I bought a cheap set of metal punches (set of 6 for $8.50 Walmart) , and I hammered WAY harder than Mark - but it came out. The power cord was attached to the mixer a little differently (string release?). Mine had to rotate 90 degrees - pliers were helpful.

  • If you keep teaching people how to fix everything I will have to close my shop soon.... Stop pleaseeee!!! LOL

    Good video...

  • Neat video, I am a fan of tinkering. I am curious though, how does one diagnose a bad worm gear?

  • @Jhunyor87 My mixer jammed while I was mixing cold butter and sugar for a cake. The mixing bowl became unseated from its locked position then the beater got stuck against it and couldn't turn. By the time I made it over to the counter to remedy the situation, the damage had been done. The beater no longer turned in any speed. I did not know what the specific issue was. But a google search on "Kitchenaid mixer won't turn" led me to a number of pages that mentioned the worm gear. And linked here.

  • This video looks great but I can't get the pin out of the planitary! I have tried everything. I can usually fix things. But this pin is not coming out. Any suggestions?

  • Good evening - thank you for the informative video - I have a 7 year old Pro 600 that I want to refresh the grease on - is there a video that covers that machine or do you have advice in that regard? thanks again

  • Great help! My mixer is back in business. Thank you!

  • Nice video, I have subscribed. I was wondering if I could get that gear at homedepot?

  • This was a great video and I was able to change my worm gear.

However, when I plugged in the mixer after changing the gear, I have no power.

    Can you help?

  • Thanks for this video - the internet can be an awesome thing!

  • Awesome video! Thanks Mark. It worked like a charm. I was going to buy a new one as this one sat for years in my garage and I just came across it. I watched the video and repaired it good as new.I cleaned it inside and out and used the old gear and bought a worm gear for it. I bought a new gear assembly for the replacement and saved the old gear as a spare. I did replace the grease as a precaution. Thanks again for uploading and for saving my machine.

  • Additionally, the replacement part 4159133 didn't fit. I found a spring tension pin 22mm x 4mm was the perfect replacement for it and went in a treat

  • wish i'd found this clip before I did my own. Very informative.

My planetary rotor pin had to be drilled out as it just point blank refused to be knocked out with a punch.

  • VERY helpful - thank you. I assume (!) that the grease in the machine returns to where it is needed?

  • I am unable to get the roll pin out of the planetary. I have tried several different tools and the thing won't budge. Help!

  • @saratoninish i hve the exact same problem! tell me if you find a wawy to get it out!

  • I have a problem with my pro600. When using a dough hook at the speed of 2, it always has a clank clank sound and it seems coming out from between the dough hook lock and the shaft and seems it can't lock well and leaving a space to cause the clank clank sound. Please help.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! It would have cost me over $140 to have mine fixed by sending it to KitchenAid. I'm so glad that I can fix it myself. Hugs!!!!

  • what about the grease? dont you need to replace the dirty grease while repairing?

  • @nauticalPrincess123 It is not necessary to replace the grease just to fix the problem of the mixer not spinning. However, it does make sense to replace the grease just for the sake of already being inside the gear housing. No harm in anticipating another repair down the road and taking care of them both at the same time. Great question and thanks for watching!

  • At first I could hear the motor running and it was not spinning. I took it apart and found the pin fell out by the worm gear. I put it back together, now I don't hear the motor at all. Help.

  • Thanks so much for the video.... It was really accurate except I had wires and chips attached to the base behind the gears that I had to first take a picture of the correct placement of the wires and then disconnect them. once that was done... easy as pie! Saved several hundred dollars doing this.... in Australia my KitchenAid was $799 on sale.... so thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome video--glad I found this. I'm going to subscribe.

  • @Rafikibobll I am also having a tough time trying to get out the pin. I've tried spraying with WD40 to loosen the pin prior to using the punch, but no luck. I got my mixer in 1987 so would there be anything else to be aware of? The model is K5SS with the lift bowl. Any tips would be helpful.

  • @datonkin I am havina a problem with the pin too. I also have a k5ss. Any tips?

  • Thanks for the video. I had to fix my kitchenaid worm gear. The video was very helpful in doing the repair.

  • @Jakerun69 We're always glad to help. Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks a lot for the excellent instructions. A minor note: on my fixed-head unit (K5SSWH), there are four big Phillips screws which need to be removed in order to access the rear head-mounting screws.

  • Thanks, Mark! I followed your instructions and fixed my Artisan. I did have to run off to Home Depot for the punch, though. Also, I ordered the worm gear with the bracket to make it a bit easier (#240309-2). There were some plastic pieces in the grease, but I just fished them out. Cost me all of $16 and 1 hour of time.

  • Hmmm... this is very different than my professional 600 with the same problem. Can you do one for that model?

  • @dcmcstr32 We'll see what we can do. It's just a matter of waiting for a good example mixer to come through the shop. We'll put that repair video on deck for you. Check back in a couple of weeks. Thanks for watching!

  • Hi, thanks for the videos, I have a 325-watt blender Artizan I have 6 years with her, I know that I do it sounds bad lately, as if you were dirty inside, still works well but I like the sound, I hope I understand they do not speak English and translated this into a page. Thank you.

  • HELP! I was trying to remove the first pin and it broke in half or thirds I have 2 tiny peices and the thing won't pop off so I think their may still be pin piece left in the main pin tha holds the mixer pin on... I can't see through the hole. It spins and the thick pin doesn't move. Is their any way to get this off?

  • Hi Mark, my KA is not running. It seemed the power is not connecting with the motor. As I don't hear the motor sound run when I turn on. Please advise me how can I fix it? Thanks again

  • Very helpful video, my KA Deluxe K5 is not working. Please tell me which spare part I need to replace and where can I purchase the replacement part from Australia?

Is the standard mixer parts same as the K5 parts? Thanks

  • Hi Mark,

Cool Videos. I have the KA Deluxe K5 mixer but is not working. Please tell me how can I know which part I need to replace and where can I purchase the replacement parts? Many thanks from Melbourne Australia

  • Nice video, very helpful even though I've got a different model. One thing worth mentioning is that I found little shreds of the damaged worm gear throughout the grease. I filtered the grease through a strainer, which seemed to catch most of them.

  • Mark,

Thanks for posting this video -- it was very helpful. I am having an issue with the governor assembly on my KitchenAid stand mixer -- could you take a look at this video and let me know whether I could fix this simply by replacing the governor, or whether there is something else going on here that may have caused the governor to fail?

    uy17I2L1fgs

    Thanks a lot!

  • Is there any way to remove the roll-pin without a special punch? I have been whacking it with a drill, a screwdriver... won't budge. Is it normal to be so hard to punch out?

  • @RafikibobII You really do need to use a punch to remove the pin. If it is being stubborn back up the spindle with something solid like a vise. That way when you strike the pin all of the energy goes to the pin instead of the rest of the mixer.

    Thanks for watching!

  • I have a problem of certain speeds not working(1-6) but 7-10 work. Before this happened it worked fine but was emitting a burning smell and then started to smoke so I shut it off and unplugged it, then I let it sit and cool down before I tried it again. Any idea as to what the problem may be, and is it possible to fix it myself as there are no people in my area that repair KA mixers.

    Thanks

  • @whitehifi I have similar problem. Did you ever get a response? After watching this video, I think I might actually be able to fix it, if someone points me in the right direction.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  • Mark,

I have a new problem with my kitchenaid stand mixer, and am hoping for an easy video or instructions similiar to yours on replacing the gear. My mixer motor assembly shakes terribly, actually moving the mixer across the counter. Any suggestions?

  • You are amazing. Thanks for putting this on the internet. My kids birthdays can now commence with all the proper cake mixing necessary!

  • @ 1:40 you are using a punch and removing the screws to take off the roll pin and planetary. I can not locate a pin or screws on the pro 600. I assume it has to be removed on the pro 600 if i am replacing the worm gear?

  • Mark,

Could you take a look at my video and help diagnosis whats wrong with it?

    NcJao5DifNo

  • @CandDWedding Absolutely! We'll comment on your video's page.

  • Thanks from Germany fpr your great advice!

  • Great Vid. I took mine apart and found that one of the 5 head screws came loose and caused metal shavings to stop the machine. I could have stopped right then and cleaned up the shavings and re-tighened the screw but I wanted to look at the inside gears, which were fine. So, if the above applies to your machine no need to remove all the parts.

  • @frankeric11 Glad our video helped. Thank you for the advise as well, I am sure that many viewers will find it helpful!

  • thank you so much very helpful. i just took apart my kitchenaid and thought the problem was it didnt have enough grease i changed the grease and it still didnt work so now i know what the problem is

    you saved me time ty!!!

  • What if the attachment hub quits spinning? How do you get it out. I have the machine apart but can't figure it out.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you!! You just saved me $300.00. My mixer is the style that lifts the bowl. With one additional step of taking off the stand to access 2 hidden screws, I was able to do this myself in less than 2 hours. You guys are awesome!

  • @theozfan Thanks!

  • Very nice videos on the KA stand mixer. Can you do some with using a Pro 6, Pro Line or Pro 600 (or Pro 610-620), for those with bowl lift models? --Especially for the replacing grease.

  • @MoosieMoo While we don't currently have a Pro machine available to use for our video production, most of the KitchenAid Mixer basics are the same. Take a look at our grease replacement video and see if it helps. It is titled "How to Fix a KitchenAid Stand Mixer That Is Leaking Oil".

    Thanks!

  • my mixer is still spinning, but is making a grinding noise as spins. do you know what this could be??

  • Great Vid!, but how do you repair the attachment assembly when it is not spinning. The back portion spins but the front part does not. I can only turn it using great force. The planetary works just fine.

  • Great video. My wife made some dough and the dough magically climbed up into the planetary housing. There was no obvious way to clean things out so I decided to take it apart (I take everything apart you know). Your video was VERY helpful. Even though I didn't get into the real guts of the machine, only the planetary head, I really appreciated having your video as a guide. Thank you so much for your good guidance and instructions.

  • Hey Mark, great vid. Help me if you can. I'm having a real hard time getting that roll pin out of the planetary. It won't move at all. Any hints? Thanks.

  • This was incredibly helpful! Thank you!

  • great video, thanx, i have a hobart 10 quart mixer. would repairs be similar of much different. i really want to replace the broken down grease and replace with new food grade grease. any suggestion, cautions, or expertise would be greatly appreciated and thanx again, lbutler.

  • Mark

Before finding your fine video, which helped me re-lubricate the gears, my wife removed the symmetrically placed black screws on the motor, which from what I can see, looks like a timing mechanism. This move disabled the mixer. I am totally unsure how to put them back in, as the shape of the insert, attached to the spring, is abnormal. HELP!

  • what is the model number for the worm gear? I have the same issue with my kitchenaid. Why does this one take one or 2 weeks to repair them? How can you tell whether the worm gear is bad or good?

    Thanks.

  • @fanglong77 The part number for the worm gear that applies to the KitchenAid mixer used in our video is W10112253. That same worm gear is compatible to many mixer models. The best way to match a replacement worm gear to your mixer is to visit our website and type your mixer's model number in the search field. The search will take you to your mixer's parts page. A mixer with a bad worm gear will no longer spin. The gear will also have visible damage on it.

  • @fanglong77 (cont.) One to two weeks? This repair only takes about fifteen minutes or less.

  • Hello Great video,

I have a different model and I have the same issue, mine is the professional model, can you help me understand how to do it with my model?

    thanks

    Roger

  • @merlot2003 If your stand mixer is a KitchenAid, then the repair to replace its worm gear is going to be very similar to this repair, regardless of its model number. Newer KA mixers use metal worm gears instead of nylon ones. Even though the repair would be similar, it still might not be a bad idea to do another video using another model, just to point out the differences. What is the model number of your machine? That'll give us a good place to start. Thanks for the comment and question. :)

  • Hi, great video!! I have a der kitchenaid mixer and the speed don't work anymore, only high speed. Do you have a video on how to fix this? Thanks isla.

  • @islaguy100 and @lordvampir0 Long answer: The speeds breaking on a KitchenAid mixer usually means that its control plate either needs to be adjusted or replaced. Replacing one isn't too tricky, but adjusting it can be, and putting a new one in also requires an adjustment. More importantly, correctly adjusting the speed on a KA mixer requires a special calibration tool normally only supplied to authorized service centers.

  • great video, i have a kitchen aid classic plus, and the speed mixer isnt working

only works on 2 speed, max and when its off.

i think some part inside might went off cause i heard a loud noise, and then started to work like that.

do you have any idea how i fix it?

    thanks

  • Thanks for the great feedback everyone!

  • @MrGeorgeMunroe That sounds like a good plan. The only way to know for sure what's going on inside the mixer is to take it apart and inspect the grease and parts like you say. As far as the noise, it's hard to know without hearing it myself. Bad grease is a possibility. Let us know how it goes and thanks!

  • Great video, it helps to see how the mixer is taken apart.

My mixer still turns but has a bit of a "whirrr" grinding noise when turning, as well as the locking lever never fully locks into place, thought i may take a look around inside and check out the grease situation.

Perhaps the noise is normal with these mixers, it's my first one.

  • @MrGeorgeMunroe Thanks! A little gear noise is normal. If you have noticed it getting noticeably louder recently then it might be worth looking into a little closer. It could be a worn gear or simply a lack of lubrication on the gears. A damaged gear will cause the beater to stop or skip during use.

    Good luck!

    -Mark

  • FAAAAANTASTIC VIDEO!

  • nice job, is there much difference for a hobart 10 qt mixer?

  • THX! I am happy & covered with grease! :-)

  • really interesting, thanks for the video

  • Nice repair job Mark. Clear, no un-necessary movements, and clear instructions. Good Job.

  • That's pretty simple. The only problem I have had with min was it would leak oil. Well it was just from non use. I turn it on and let it run once every 3 months or so (if not in use) and that keeps the grease from liquifying.

    Great Vid!!
