I have to apologise I misunderstood your comment. However, the song is dedicated to John and June, who helped show me how to beat the devil.
It is obvious JC was going through something and it may have been the first time KK saw him a a man rather than a god. The rest of the song is the song. The dedication is part of the song as a whole. I feel we need much more info to determine what it is really about. I always thought JC wrote songs not poetry? The way they met was really strange.

Great video and a great song with meaning. Kristoferson did write this and dedicated it to Johnny cash and June Carter. Probably cause they save his life from partying and drinking.

The piece is about an idealistic down and out song writer who ends up in a bar and is chatted up by whoever. Mr. whoever sings him a ditty about the silliness of being idealistic. The singer drinks the guys beer and steals his song. The idealist writer changes a few words and behold the meaning of the song now reflect the writers Ideals. I understand the song, but the intro is about Mr Cash. the meeting was a reality check for KK in my view. JC even said so in an interview. Thanks for your input .

I have to apologise I misunderstood your comment. However, the song is dedicated to John and June, who helped show me how to beat the devil.
It is obvious JC was going through something and it may have been the first time KK saw him a a man rather than a god. The rest of the song is the song. The dedication is part of the song as a whole. I feel we need much more info to determine what it is really about. I always thought JC wrote songs not poetry? The way they met was really strange.
