hmm, I guess the "Hunley" was watertight, but air vents on the Monitor were not built to hold out the water in rough seas.
I guess time and cost restraints prevented advanced designs by which the turret box fitting and gunwales would have positive locking water seals to be used in case. Air intakes and funnels should have been fitted with snorkel apparatus.
She probably would have dived down a few yards under pounding overwhelming waves and then bobbed back up to the surface again if she had!
