This is a very awesome recording. I love Live in Austraila and I love the fact that it contains some of Eltons most underrated works The King Must Die, Have Mercy on the Criminal etc. BUT...Elton sounds so much better when its just him and the piano. I think something here gets lost. Its like they tried to hard. Its still awesome don't get me wrong, but Elton stripped down to bare bones just sounds so much better. Just my opinion. Honorable men and women may differ.
Elton, Please know that a 40 yr old African American Male in Tokyo from Texas loves this album on the trains each day on his commute. You have touched my life in so many ways with your music. I thank you! You have so much amazing music and I could never begin to list the greatest songs you have sang which never topped the charts but I have them all and appreciate your work. Thank you for making my days just a little easier and my life just a little better. You music will live with me forever.
It's kind of weird to think that part of the reason why this performance sounds so awesome is because Elton was having major issues with growths on his vocal cords during this performance. I love that raspy, gritty, soulful sound... but it comes at a price!
I've been listening to Elton John for many years and have heard quite a few versions of this song. This is by far my favorite because of the ending. It's like the whole song is working up to an explosion at the end, you almost expect fireworks to go off. Love this man's music!!
this version (live in australia) as well as the other songs of the set, all available on the "live in australia" cd. Original studio version released on "elton john" 1970 eponymous album
By far my favorite version of this song. I remember listening to this in college when it came out...good times!
