It's strange to me that the older effects are so much better and all the investment has been in CGI and not man made props. Imagine how good they could look today. We are to intelligent to believe CGI's lack of soul, physics and texture. There is also a huge lack of creativity in the last decade with a ridiculous amount of remakes, in which not even one of them is half as good as the original. Horrors like The Thing will be watched forever unlike the recent remakes and dull teen horrors of today
fuck the small screen bullshit...........the wide screen version of The Thing is the proper film........you won't know what the hell's going on if you watch it in the format displayed on this clip.......Universal Studios is partly to blame....and that dumb lawyer..what's his face....
I totally admit and agree with John about the bloodier the better and the funner, i'm so afraid of scary movies but i work as a freelance makeup artist and photography and i LOVE LOVE LOVE doing bloody shoots and doing zombie make up i recently just did a shoot with a bullet hole in the forehead. They are so much fun.
1982 the thing is the greatest horror movie ever made, it is just the public back in 1982 were such cowardly pussies that they got scared shitless by it thats why it got such a negative review
So that is where the Duke Nukem line came from, you know the one "it's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I am all out of gum". I know the majority of Duke's lines are copied from movies.
I love his quote about how there are only two horror stories you can tell. I never thought of it that way. Now I'll always think of it that way. Thanks, John. You are the man.
this man is a GENIUS, how he came up with the ideas for the monsters in The Thing, I love how he came up with the remote control car as a head in that scene, when they burned it it was all they had XD and went totally well with the movie damn this guy was born to make horror films
I am not that big of a fan of the Nightmare on Elm Street Saga but I have to admit, it is a very original and creative idea for sure! Freddy Krueger is my least favorite Horror Movie Slasher out of the 3 iconic Slashers which are of course: Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger! I prefer Jason out of the 3 to be the best but I still think Michael Myers is the scariest by far!
James Wan and Leigh Whannell are other HUGE Horror Movie Inspirations for me as well! They create such a creepy and eerie atmosphere in their films together! For example, Insidious was the scariest movie I have ever seen that was made in the last 30 years! It terrified me! James Wan and Leigh Whannell know how to create a truly Scary Movie! That's what is so great about them! Also they made another terrifying film called "Dead Silence" which is like Insidious but SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME!
Wes Craven is one of my biggest Horror Film Inspirations! He's the main reason why I want to become a Horror Movie Director or an Actor! Once I saw Scream for the first time, I was immidiately pulled into the world of terror! I have always loved the late 90's "Scream-Like" Horror Films like Urban Legend, I Know what you did Last Summer and Valentine! I love Home Invasion Horror Films like The Strangers, When a Stranger Calls, Funny Games, Kidnapped (2011), THEM etc.
the greatest horror movie ever is John Carpenter's Halloween. It scared me as a child and still sends a chill down my spine whenever i see Michael Myers.
Special effects of this time had character, dimension and atmosphere, CGI is ludicrous and lacks all of these qualities. Indeed; modern film is exsanguineous and mawkish in comparison.
There's a thing to be said about movies, regardless if they are receivers of awards or trashed by everyone, there is some truth, some expression from life that's in every movie ever made, even if you can't see it. Mr. Carpenter, do as your heart pleases, I always support you.
I love how all the most important or scariest things are put into writing for effect, and then "The Stuff in Twinkies" is written up there too. Also Carpenter is a boss.
I love Carpenter's philosophy on filmmaking, that you should be proud and honor your films because they belong to you and it doesn't matter what anyone else says. Even though some of his work is lacking, it's solid advice.
Carpenter is easily one of my favorite filmmakers. Top 3, for sure. His talent is sorely missed from the horror genre. These days it's filled with hacks like Eli Roth, the guys behind the "Saw" movies, etc., who have no idea how to make good scary horror movies. Carpenter can creep you just with a camera angle and a couple piano notes.
- "I have come to chew bubble gum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubble gum."
My number one favorite movie line, favorite movie and favorite director! Tragically underrated film! The plot is friggin genius IMO. Thanks for all your great uploads Splatterandgore, we really love and appreciate the content and effort you put into feeding us horror hogs such good, gooey slop, I'll continue licking my trough clean!
it's surprising for some people that john carpenter actually likes gore & blood, his first film "halloween" used shocks and scares than gore and blood, my friend got surprised about that cuz he doesn't like horror films other than halloween
This guy just knows how to build the suspense...which is the biggest part of a horror film...Halloween the original barely has any gore...but fuck...it fucks with you, you know? He builds up the SUSPENSE like Alfred Hitchcock...
If you like John Carpenter's scores check out my channel. I made a concept record that involves deconstructing Carpenter's scores and remixing Lil Waynes tracks with the deconstructed scores. It is super dark and heavy.
"Last Rites: The Return of Sebastian Vasilis" starring Kurt Russel as Karl, Jennifer Anniston as Barbara, Gene Simmons as Sebastian, Randy Quaid as Lyndon, Robert Deniro as Abssi and Viggo Mortonson as Udo, directed by John Carpenter. A guy can dream!
I saw a clip on AMC where Carpenter appears to come across as sort of a deuschebag in regards to Zombie redoing Halloween. Pretty fucked up considering he remade The Thing.
It's funny, there are so many looney, crazy directors out there but watching interviews with horror directors like Carpenter, Craven, Cronenberg, Hooper, etc i just see the nicest most down to earth people, you wouldn't think that after seeing their movies lol
@favsncrap Nah, a better solution. Bring back the rubber and strings and keep the CGI for when you want a shot that'd be impossible to do without it. CGI isn't going away, it has too much appeal and potential for directors. But at the same time, bring back the physical props and monsters for that real feeling. Seamlessly meshing the two to make a truly superior film would be the holy grail of special effects.
@EvilCleric I agree, CGI is well used (for the most part) in lord of the rings, However i personaly think having CGI for living or organic beings looks so false, Rubber for living or things with dynamic motion is best (with some CGI if the rubber isnt moving in the right way) CGI is awesome for mechanical and non living or things that are not naturaly occuring in nature (such as xwings in starwars or army tanks)
@favsncrap It's funny, everyone who think so have never had any experience in traditional or digital art. CGI is carefully crafted, as much as practical effects were back those days. There are a lot of talented artist who started their careers in latex modeling who are now working on pixels and polygons, the guy who did some main creatures in Avatar is one of them. Computers allow people do more in less time, untalented people are going to make more crap more quickly, it's not CGI fault.
@ErikRicardoLC I know lol ive done it at uni, im still against its application for the most part. The lord of the rings films were a perfect example so many cool cgi parts HOWEVER tons of lotr was done with models and lighting and you can tell, though i love the film and the cgi is well done for the most part you (well i can) tell it feels not as realistic as models. The balrog was an exception but gollum to me didnt look right and neither did the cgi stunt doubles... AVARTA = MASSIVE OVERHYPE
@favsncrap Cinema it's the most technological art, without the chemical industry's new technology back in the 60's there had not been the type of latex that allowed the makeup artists do these classic monsters masks same it happens right now but with computer science right now, there are ALSO some perceptual phenomena factors since now we are more used to visual effect so we don't "believe" those trick that easily.
@ErikRicardoLC And that is why the art needs to go back to being (for the most part) made of physical material. Physical material is real, very few actors / directors can pull of cast interaction with non physical props. Even though chemicals made the original props there was something physical there to hold and observe. Any fans wanting to view cinema props in the future will just be looking at a computer screen on maya or 3dsmax.
@favsncrap i can't be done anymore, the main problem with prosthetic is no matter how well done is they always will limit actor's facial expression as they always stand over the face volume, the Double Face digital prosthetic is a good example of that, it looks like the face was ripped off, you can do that adding latex into an actor face. There are a lot of essays about how we psychological change our phenomena perception along the time, now we "believe" less in vfx.
@ErikRicardoLC yeh i would agree with that, i still think with advances in technology and robotics (take japan for example) that the prosthetics will be amazingly advanced today, i know this will never happen as no one is daring or has the finaces to push for the more expensive physical materials
@favsncrap I hope so too, since there is a lot of effects can be done all CGI. My favorites effects are the one who were made mixing techniques, Jurassic Park doesn't look as an old effect movie because those gorgeous animatronics but now Hollywood just go with all CGI 3D stereoscopic hype.
@ErikRicardoLC Couldn' agree more friend. JP still looks as good today as it did when it came out. Avatar, pffffft please.....looks as fake now as it did when it came out.
I just read one of the coolest horror screenplays of all time! It's at Circalit.com. It's called Something In Return, and it's fucking crazy!
You have to become a member, but it's free and simple and absolutely worth it.
The story's about a devil-worshiper who has to sacrifice his son to claim immortality. Talking about one seriously wild and disturbing story. It's gonna make one hell of a movie!
Halloween, the best horror film, period. Did Rob Zombie not watch the original at all?. It just goes to show John Carpenter is a fucking legend. Thanks for posting.
If I were John Carpenter I would make a prequel of the thing. It would be great to see how those other guys found that UFO and awoke the thing. It could be a great movie if you ask me.
@qwcatfacenamedtimmy i think just The Thing. Funny, it's a prequel, but it's name makes it sound like a remake. At least, i think that's the title. Wiki it.
@maddrex77 they are making a prequel or remake or something that John Carpenter has nothing to do with and its gonna be lame as hell. Check it out on IMDB
@maddrex77 Actually a prequel of the thing has already been filmed and is ready to be released this october 2011, although it's not directed by Carpenter.
@maddrex77 They're making a prequel...I was on a site where the showed all the up and coming remakes and sequels and The Thing was one of them. From the pictures it looks like it's going to be very good...hope they don't f it up.
halloween will always be my fav john carpenter film. his later works, like in the mouth of madness and ghost of mars...iffy. loved in the mouth of madness. still, they have the john carpenter feel to them.
Anyone know if this TV special is available on DVD? I had it taped on VHS but my VCR ate my tape and I lost it. And I never see it on TV around Halloween anymore. I loved watching it around Halloween time.
I remember the first time I saw Halloween. Oh my gosh that movie scared the living daylights out of me. I was like in third grade and I just could not stop obsessing over how scary it was. My mom had to bann me from horror movies for a while.
As much as I love the movie, They Live is not a horror movie. They shouldn't be showing clips...

AVARTA = MASSIVE OVERHYPE
favsncrap 5 months ago
@favsncrap Cinema it's the most technological art, without the chemical industry's new technology back in the 60's there had not been the type of latex that allowed the makeup artists do these classic monsters masks same it happens right now but with computer science right now, there are ALSO some perceptual phenomena factors since now we are more used to visual effect so we don't "believe" those trick that easily.
ErikRicardoLC 5 months ago

ErikRicardoLC 5 months ago
@ErikRicardoLC yeh i would agree with that, i still think with advances in technology and robotics (take japan for example) that the prosthetics will be amazingly advanced today, i know this will never happen as no one is daring or has the finaces to push for the more expensive physical materials
favsncrap 5 months ago
@favsncrap I hope so too, since there is a lot of effects can be done all CGI. My favorites effects are the one who were made mixing techniques, Jurassic Park doesn't look as an old effect movie because those gorgeous animatronics but now Hollywood just go with all CGI 3D stereoscopic hype.
ErikRicardoLC 5 months ago
@ErikRicardoLC Couldn' agree more friend. JP still looks as good today as it did when it came out. Avatar, pffffft please.....looks as fake now as it did when it came out.

I just read one of the coolest horror screenplays of all time! It's at Circalit.com. It's called Something In Return, and it's fucking crazy!
You have to become a member, but it's free and simple and absolutely worth it.
The story's about a devil-worshiper who has to sacrifice his son to claim immortality. Talking about one seriously wild and disturbing story. It's gonna make one hell of a movie!

If I were John Carpenter I would make a prequel of the thing. It would be great to see how those other guys found that UFO and awoke the thing. It could be a great movie if you ask me.

qwcatfacenamedtimmy 1 year ago
@qwcatfacenamedtimmy i think just The Thing. Funny, it's a prequel, but it's name makes it sound like a remake. At least, i think that's the title. Wiki it.
BKAllmighty 1 year ago
@maddrex77 Actually I think this is coming out. Search for the thing a rotten tomatoes and read the description of the movie coming 2011.
DecoyAUT 1 year ago
@maddrex77 they are making a prequel or remake or something that John Carpenter has nothing to do with and its gonna be lame as hell. Check it out on IMDB
revolverroman 1 year ago
@maddrex77 I'd make a sequel to the Thing, show how it gets away, trying to get to civilization.
theScytheofGod 1 year ago
@maddrex77 Actually a prequel of the thing has already been filmed and is ready to be released this october 2011, although it's not directed by Carpenter.

Prince of Darkness was pretty weak. Some cool effects and nifty ideas, but it was pretty forgettable compared to the Thing or They Live
