@Varese52 They do say that "Geniuses steal from the very best."
Indeed, and they would be correct. But this sort of paraphrasing doesn't really bother me at all. By the conclusion of the film I am always on the verge of outright tears, even if Truffaut mistakenly (in my view) thought that Oscar Werner played the part of Montag dispassionately. It is one of those films which never ceases to move me and Herrman's music is a vital part of it. Happy 100th Bernie!
The Faherenheit 451 soundtrack is among his most beautiful works---even though the movie never made much of an impression on me. His music added a dreamy dimension to an otherwise dull movie.
“I will be very quiet, replied Archie and I will be boldly frank. I do not love my father, I wonder sometimes, if I do not hate him.Perhaps my shame, perhaps my sin, at least and in sight of God, not my fault. How was I to love him? He has never spoken to me, never smiled upon me, and I do not think he ever touched me.He was more afraid of death, than of anything else. And he died as he thought he would, while the first snows of winter fell.” A Classic!!!
I have posted the full scores for two Twilight Zone episodes Herrmann worked on.. .."Ninety Years Without Slumbering" and "The Lonely", feel free to check them out if you'd like.

Bernard Herrmann's music could be moving without being overtly sentimental; noble without being pretentious. That's saying a great deal!

So dystopianly poignant (nearly to point of tears), yet so noble-&-heroic as well. Yet another Bernard Herrmann masterpiece!

@am2boni Can you tell me where this passage is from? Is it read from one of the books that was to be burned in the film?

I hope they use Bernard Herrmann's superb music in the upcoming remake of Fahrenheit 451. It can't be beat.

I love the piece. Bernard Herrmann also composed some haunting music for the original "Twilight Zone" show.

It is so redolent of the slow movement of Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony. But that's fine. He knew to borrow from the very best.

Simply put, the most beautiful music ever penned on paper.

Plus his also haunting The Ghost & Mrs. Muir. Both are his masterpieces.

So beautiful and full of longing.

Amazing theme. Herrmann was such an under-appreciated genius.
Also, this is the only film I've seen where the openning credits are "spoken".

What was that tune at the very beginning during the intro credits?

And that wonderful last scene where the grandson "lives on" as The Weir of Herniston after his grandfather dies.
