  • first one was 6914 what were the other two loco numbers?

  • My Brother....you did a great job! I have dug this video for years!! Glad to see another brother out here "chasing trains"!!! Later!

  • Greatest diesel locomotive ever built!

  • Cool video, but you sound like you should be an voice in porno movies.

  • nice historic footage I got caught by 6936 a few years ago on a buisness car train ...man i wish people could still go to all these locations now UP has them all fenced off to the public I hve been over Sherman hill and this mainline one time last year on an Amtrak detour

  • V12 engine

  • Actually, they have dual V16 engines. The same engine that EMD put in the SD 40, which is why it has the designation DDA40X.

  • really??? that's great!

It is the locomotive which cannot come out in Japan

Because the ground is weak, and the Japanese freight train declines

  • Sadly, only DDA40-X 6936 is left in operation.

  • Yep that's true. Well 6930 is used as a cab control, but no working motors and 6946 is missing a few pieces.

  • um, how did you pronounce depot?????

  • depo is the answer but they spell it like depot

  • Great Job, wish I could capture something cool like that without my camera shaking so much! :) :D

    Way to go!

  • AWESOME JOB!

  • very nice

  • wow...thanx

  • While you were chasing these locmotives were they going about 90mph?

  • Spawn and Crazy...you guys are great!! You know years ago I knew I would regret not following this train all the way to North Platte. I had motored all the way from Chicago just to visit Cheyenne and Sherman Hill. I knew it...I knew it...I knew it.

  • @msibnsf you shot that Acela video from the early 2000's right?

I mean I'm sure that many other people have done the same so if I'm wrong I apologize but you're voice is unmistakable.

  • @Amtrak1194 Yes, I shot both videos.

    David

  • My headphones need checking. Never mind.

  • Dear SpawnofChaos...I beg to differ...listen closely. The comment over the radio is as quoted.

    David Harrison

  • INCORRECT CAPTION! "You got'm all" is "You've got the ball" as in highball.

  • Saw these runnung the Feather River in 1984 - - - amazing sight ! The only other sight I would enjoy would be a restored and operational Big Blow ! But I'm sure the " Greens " and " Naysayers " would Bitch about the noise and turbine exhaust. Heard a " Blow " in Wyoming in the mid 60's, sounded like a 737 throttling up for take off.

  • NICE!!!!! The train at 3 MIN is rolling slow until the Waycar (caboose) started rolling and all the slack was out. I shot video from that bridge in 1994, ten years after!!! The train your following (6914) came off the CNW A Freemont, NEB. We called 'em "Falcons"..or "Birds. Still do yet today, although it is no where near as interesting. THank sfor sharing!!!

  • Great video! It brings back a lot of memories when I was a teen in the late 70's and our house was across I-15 from the UP main. It was not unusual to see sets of 3 and on rare occasions 4 Centennials in a lash up.

  • A 27,000 horsepower lashup! Wish I could have seen that!

  • You mean 19,800 horsepower. There would have to be four DDA40Xs to come colse to 27,000.

  • Nice video! Love to see the 6900s in action. Please post more if you have any, thanks.

  • I think dude you've got some great VHS Video of the DDA40X those were really experemental GP40-2's with a DD Wheel arangement and 2 3,300 hp 645E3C still just as beautiful as those 8,500 Hp Gas turbines, to have a DDA40X and a Gas turbine of 8500 HP wiould create a great force of brute freight train pulling power. Andy Bowe these videos bring back memories, Andy Bowe

  • sheesh. a total of 19,800 horsepower in this video. Im surprised their haul-load wasn't longer.

  • Nice video, love that 84 breakdancing style electro-music in the background while driving, lmao! Those DDA40x's were giants!

  • UP's DDA40Xs, probably the most popular locomtoives of all time! When UP took 25 out of storage in 84, fans were flockin' UP Country to find them!

  • My brother,

Thanks for the DDA-40x footage...I am an eastcoast boy...B&O born and bred...but i have always liked the 40x's...they were in a word...impressive.

  • great footage, never saw the DDA40X in action.

    Massive dieseling !!!!

  • Thanks soohoojrj for a follow-up. I'm on both sides of the fence...a UP fan and modeller and a member of IRM. I imagine electric traction and Chicago area history are most important in deciding which museum pieces get inside storage and get preserved. Unfortunately, the DDA40X doesn't meet either of those qualifications...in fact Union Pacific has only been in Chicago less than 30 years. Although an operational DDA40X never made it to the Windy, a DD35 did...but thats another story, LOL.

  • I live in Chicago and go to IRM all the time, I am a huge DDA40X fan. I am diapointed with its condition as well, I am thinking about proposing some ideas to IRM, the most realistic being that since IRM isnt laiden with cash they could do a cosmetic restoration and send it to UP for a mechanical resto. In partial payment for the work they could lend the unit to UP for excursions (the same deal they worked out with BNSF on the executive locomotives) think that could work?

  • All i meant was, they have 9 large barns on the property, and i'm sure their are some cars and loco's of less importance, that they could of put 6930 inside to better preserve it. Ron Lehmers website shows photos of the steady decline of 6930 over the years, while in IRM's posession. And yes, volunteers and donations make it work, but they still have 9 indoor barns. IRM does do fine work, they just need to throw a little more towards 6930. I wasnt trying to start a flame war, have a good one

  • I don't think the locomotive at IRM came directly from the UP...so don't blame them, If I recall it was outside in the Kansas City area being restored by a local group who did not have the means to finish the job. The locomotive then went to IRM. IRM is entirely voluntary....including workers and funding and there is just so much their meager funds can do. IRM will consider donations for specific projects....one way DDA40X fans can participate.

  • It is an utter disgrace at the rusting hulk condition of #6930, that the Illinois Railroad Museum has let this locomotive become. U.P. should not of let the poor bastards have it, if they are to poor to maintain it in the fine condition they received it in. U.P. needs to take it back, before it rusts to the ground.

  • gr8

    thank you 4 narration

  • I've seen it on a freight one time. After it hit the dump truck in Louisianna, it came to NLR, AR for wreck repairs and it left on the QNLNP headed to North Platte. It was a sight to see.

  • What's the # for the last of the Three Jacks? I can make out #6914 and #6917, but the I'm not sure if the third is #6923 or not. Great and fun video!

  • Those beasts are fast.

  • The world's largest diesel locomotives.

  • I guess the DD40AXs were the first diesels to have the wide nose cabs

  • The only surviving DDA40X locomotives are 6900,6901,6911,6913,6915,6916,6922,6925,6930,6936,6938,6944,6946. 6936 as every knows is opertional and 6930 is used as a cab control,so the motors are not opertional. 6930 is probably the next DDA40X to be restored into service.

  • theres a easy way to restore a DDA40X

Take the components out of two retired SD40-2s and put em in the DD40AX

  • I wonder if 6936 ever done freight service after it was restored into UP's heritage fleet and used.

  • Never seen 3 of them in one lashup. Usually i would see 2 of them and a SD40/SD40-2

  • One of those Diesels lives right near me!

  • BIG MONSTER

  • Do you have more videos of the DDA40Xs?
