@SlikkTim - Back in the day (50's - 80's) there were artists making music. Whether it was singing, playing an instrument, dancing or all of the above. They were ARTists. Today, we have performers. There is a HUGE difference and a total decrease in real talent (with the exception of a small few). SMH
Where are the big bands any more?? Kool & The Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, Ohio Players, Isley Brothers, Tower of Power, Parliment Funkadelic...etc! Come on kids pick up an instrument!
@SlikkTim That's possible. But I think it's the changing times (and other factors). Doo Wop groups are no longer popular, having been displaced by the bands I mentioned (and other artists). As rap became popular it displaced the bands...etc, the music industry sees whats selling and promote it, the others (groups and such) can't get the support (record deal, studio time, money) so they end up playing small clubs only not making enough $ to grow, ...in that way it's economical
@SlikkTim But it's not that groups can't find the money for instruments, travel and other expenses of running a band. I say that because the groups of the 60's and 70's were not rich (when they started out) but they found a way. It's just not popular among the new music buying generation. It's a shame because there are some really good musicians...like yourself, you sound like a very good base player.
@SlikkTim And if it was the 70's you'd have a better chance of getting a band together and getting air play because that type of music was new and fresh. I could go on and on about this. I think it's a shame that taste in music is at such a low that some dude with a mic spurting out obscenities or other ridiculous lyrics can sell a million records but real talented musicians can't get a deal or air play.
@SlikkTim Seriously, how do I go from listening to the great sounds of Earth Wind and Fire (with real musicians playing drums, guitars, keyboards, kalimba, symbols, beautiful/ deep lyrics...etc) to Lil Wayne babbling some barely intelligible, uh, "stuff" to some canned music? Not to pick on Lil Wayne, but seriously the drop off in quality of music today is amazing! But it ain't for me, so have at it "this current generation", I'll take my EWF, Marvin, Stevie and Smokey any day!!!!!!!!
@antav9 Thanks for watchin' my channel. One of my favorites artists right now are Gucci Mane and Waka Floka Flame. One of my favorite old shit is Eric Dolphy... both were tagged as crap when they came out.
love those whistles.......basement parties, red and black lights, young girls waiting to grind to their favorite slow jams, and the brothers waiting, too......LOL.....
The horn section kinda sounds like the McDonalds Hamburger commercial theme music. "McDonalds is your kind of place" You old timers from the 60's & 70's will probably remember exactly what I'm talking about, as it was about the same time frame.....Still love this song! Still love McDonalds old, original menu!
@vivwritten Wish you would! My old, white boy ass would love it. I didn't dig it when it was new, but fuckin' A, it beats the Hell outta all that new crap!!!!
I was a three year old kid in pre-school when this played on am radio prior to fm stereo. My sister was a baby at the time. Now this is music unlike most of the bullshit that's out now.
@owiz9212 I completely agree; the Real Kool and the Gang was one before James (J.T.) Taylor was sighed on and they went soft. Trained in Jazz (you know, actually learning how to play an instrument) and grounded in Funk. When I was a kid I grew up surrounded by this stuff so I didn't appreciate it as I should have - the level of musicianship is so much higher than today.
This song was one of the first true funk songs that this nation could listen to. This sound was a brand new funk type of music. White prople never heard anyting like this. Even some black people back in the days.
