I remember when this movie came out how we all ran down to the movies to see it. Back then it was such a big deal to see Blacks in the movies. I was only 13 years old when this movie came out.
Trivia: In the first scene of this movie as Claudine converses with her fellow female bus riders notice the older woman. That is actress Minnie Gentry who is actor Terence Howard's [Hustle & Flow] grandmother.
@xchethomasx So, so many. When they get married, when Roop puts the white guy in his place over the garbage, when the kids all want ice cream, etc, etc.
does anyone have the full movie for this film because Ive searched all the thrift stores and retail stores and I cant find this movie anywhere.....I want to see this movie badly....
@Zepoch1 - the song's called "The Makings Of You". The version they put in 'Claudine' is sung by Gladys Knight, tho' there's another version sung by Curtis L. Mayfield, who wrote the song. talk about an absolutely beautiful song, mmm-mm-mmm...~ b.
@MrBillie1234 Yeah I knew that, but was this a special instrumental version they used just for this movie? I can't find the instrumental anywhere else, but it sounds great. I love the sung version as well, but it's nice to just hear the instruments.
@Zepoch1 - i guess i misunderstood. I didn't realize that asking "what is the song that starts at 0:26?...i don't know that one" actually meant "i know this song well, but where can i find the instrumental version?" I apologize 4 thinking that you saying "i don't know" actually meant you did not know.
@MrBillie1234 Haha no I didn't mean to sound aggressive, it's completely fine. This version was probably made just for this movie, and not released separately anyway.
Where is the entire movie? The whole entire Claudine movie was on here, but now it's not. Will somebody please upload Claudine, the whole entire movie, back onto youtube? This is such a wonderful movie and it would be much appreciated if someone would oblige us viewers, please.
this is addressing to you pgwarner women right now in this day and age are still going throught these circumstances this movie is no way are glorifying these situations but its a realilty its real unfortunaltley theres no family unit anymore but its nothing more than a black family rising together and make things happen
Man....talk about your ride or die chic...no one these days have nothing on Claudine!!! But I just have one question...if everybody went to jail...who bailed them out????? Could it have been Claudine's girls from the bus??? Or maybe the unsympathetic lady who employed her. Hmmmmmmmm........LMBO!!!!
I love this movie. It doesn't matter if u like it or not it's some peoples reality. @ PGWARNER, THE PEOPLE IN THIS MOVIE HAVE MORE MONEY THEN U...LOL! It's just a movie enjoy...lighten up!
This movie is bullcrap. I'm not for the "struggle", being on welfare, man with low paying job, 6 kids by Lord knows how many different men. Hey, this is good for the 70's this is not the world today. Men need to quit thinking that women want to struggle with them and be poor as hell. No I'm not for struggling, I'm all for making it and rising to the top. Hey you want to"struggle?" Then go find yourself a crack head.
@PGWARNER Just because you are not for the "struggle" doesn't mean that its' not reality; and certainly doesn't mean that the movie is/was bullcrap! The movie was excellent.
I still tear up when I see this part, I was young when this came out, and my mom raised us alone and I still feel that til this day...I love this movie It was real.
omg I still love this scene to...that was when real black love was hard and strong...thats when a black man was scared but still willing to say lets do it and fight for the family he wanted...missing my dad on that...RIP daddy....
When I was a child my mother used to tell me over and over again how time flies; my goodness gracious I can't believe it's been 37 years since this came out.....................wow!! Did anyone notice Kim Field's mother (Chip Fields), she's is the protestor going up the stairs in the blue shirt!
i dont like how Roop's childs mother tries to make him pay child support to kids he never wanted she wanted them she take care of them. You can tell he didnt want them by the way he wanted to hide. i dont care if it's half his too he didnt want it he shouldnt have to owe his life to a one night stand
@JaceyLP Roop was paying child support but somewhere along the way someone told the ex-wife she could get MORE by securing court ordered payments. $60 was considered a lot of money in 1974.
I love this movie too...My favorite!! I can count how many times I've watched it! I was 9 when this came out..the first movie my mom took me to! Great memories...Black Love at it's best...I'm so glad they 'made a happy home'...
I love this movie, one of my all time greatest... even though he knew it was a "big Load" he followed his heart. The baby girl said Charles and Charlene are moving out , there'll only be four of us.... how sweet... they loved him and wanted him around.
I totally agree. I was only 2 when this movie came out but for some reason this movie speaks to me. And Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs was before my time but damn he was fine. LOL
Yep! I thought that was her on those steps. She really looks like her youngest daughter here. One of my favorite movies and the soundtrack is slamming. I remember being about 6 years old growing up in Washington DC in the 70's when this movie came out. My mom and aunts would put this album on and break out the Miller beer...LOL! Good times, back in the day, great music too back in the day.

God! please bring back those glorious triple features again.
Don't have this movie, i 1st saw this film at a drive in back in 1977 although the movie came out in 1974 but in georgia they always brought back those black movieslike scream blacula scream that came out in 1973 but they brought it back out in 1980.
Hey thanks 4 posting. I love watchin black films from the 70's. Such a simpler time. I don't watch todays black films, there's no substance. Also great soundtrack.
I used to love to watch Diahann Carroll too. When this movie would come on my mother and I would do facials (trying to have skin like hers), eat popcorn, and sing the songs and have a good old time.
I love this scene. My girl said, I'll even go to jail with you. This movie showed what it takes for a black family to stay together despite impossible conditions. James Earl Jones played this role to the ninth. The struggle of a black man in love trying to do the right thing even though he didn't have much to offer on the surface, his manhood spoke reams. He stepped up anyway. It is a classic!
I'm 22 and I watched this film when I was around 11 and loved it even then. I was so happy when I found it on DVD about 3 years ago. Diahann Carroll is legendary and so is this film. Curtis Mayfield did a wonderful job composing the soundtrack (as he did with Sparkle) and to top that Gladys Knight and the Pips on the entire soundtrack. Such a great combination, one couldn't help but love it. I'm highly diasappointed that Ms. Carroll didn't receive the Academy Award for Best Actress that year.
I loved this movie.Remember, when Claudine whopped her daughter with that brush.lol I was rollin'.She reminded me of my mom :) Carroll, always plays such strong black woman roles. I love her.
I remember this scene very well, it was very touching. It takes a hell-of-a-man to marry a woman with six kids. "Mister Welfare Man", alot of women were married to him way back in the day.
i absolutely love this film. just wish that you would have let the entire credits scroll to the end when they all walk hand in hand as a family. thanks for the post still.
