In line (arm) POSITION has the right of way on attack when the fencer(in line) isn't attacking, so at the moment you're not attacking you will have the right of way because of your in line position.
So, such an ACTION can be a counter-attack with or without evasion, lunges, fleche,...at the moment your arm remains straight in the valid-target direction. No contradiction...
For me is clear. If you go down, it's a contraatack, no the line.
