Shop-Rite is celebrating their 40th Anniversary Can-Can sale. I do remember commercials preceding the animateds that featured a live can-can dancer in silouette. That was scandalous in the 19th Century?
Hey, cd, they might cut some stuff, but otherwise, their deals are hardly beat in my neck of the woods.
For those unaware of the "Shop-Rite" supermarket chain {along a small portion of the East Coast of the U.S.}, their "Can Can" sales are often held twice a year, during the winter and summer (and there ARE good bargains to be had!). The current versions of these ads are more "cartoonish" [with a little painter aping "Toulouse Latrec"] in execution, yet a lot more fun! The woman who mentions the current specials towards the end still does voice-over work for Shop-Rite today.
I remember this commercial when I was little. Between this, Crazy eddie and carvel, it doesnt get any better. Oh yea Newmark and Lewis was classic too.
Oh good God... I don't know who my Congressman is, I can't remember a single word of High School French, I couldn't name three Shakespeare plays, but 25 years later I still remember every word of the lyrics of this commercial jingle.
I worked at the Shoprite in the Mt. Kisco/Bedford Hills area of New York in the deli dept. in 1984. This brings back memories. Thanks for caring. Mike.
today i was passing by Elizabeth shop rite. bought 3 24-bottled water cases. Plastic wrap was not holding well and bottles were falling out, so i grabbed some extra bags at the register. The cashier said i can only take 2-3. I explained i wouldn't be able to carry the whole case because it would fall apart. The cashier replied "IT (whole case) WOULDN'T FIT INTO A BAG ANYWAY".
hope she gets demoted to maintenance because somebody has to clean up that diarrhea some of them have for the brain.
I live in Ohio now and very much miss ShopRite. Much more reasonable than the supermarkets here. The chain markets here are so expensive! It's weird because the cost of living in Philly and Jersey is more than the cost of living in Ohio.
The can can commercials remind me of my childhood. I always loved the can can commericals.
i remember these commercials always being on around christmas time and this year i didn't see them... thus i came here and guess what? i actually found a shoprite commercial haha
Shop Rite is a nice supermarket chain. In Rhode Island instead of Shop Rite we get the low end, welfare version known as Save Rite. Dirty stores, low grade meats sold warm, low end products and rude cashiers. Avoid this slum and shop at Aldi's
Aldi is a German chain and i was excited to shop there but when i saw for the first time what they sell in the states i never want to shop there again. They don't have any brand names in one store i visited in new jersey. it's clean. but it's for welfare recipients.
Aldi isn't just for welfare recipients. It does have off-brands, though.
The real "welfare store" is Pathmark, which in my former hometown of Warminster, PA was the dingiest, filthiest, most-expensive supermarket in town, but it has since closed.
There were huge yellow signs in Pathmark's windows in both Spanish & English saying that they take food stamps and WIC.
(Women, Infants & Children is a program that allows mothers of young kids to buy nutritious food).
Aldi's is awesome! There garbage can and kitchen trash bags are the best buy. They're a full 1 mil. thick (most off brand bags are thinner) and still among the cheapest out there. Sure, some of their stuff is inferior, but you learn what to buy there and what to go elsewhere for.
They are all over New Jersey. East Brunswick,West Windsor, the shore areas. Most are bigger then ever (the one in East Brunswick is the size of a small city!).
I have heard the old radio commercials from the Seventies recently ("Hey, Mom! What's for dinner? Shop Rite has the answer"), but I haven't seen any videos of it.
Thanks. My mom died in December of 2002. And right up until before I'd sk her "whats for dinner?" and She'd say "Shop Rite's got the answer" BTW thats from the 80's not the 70's. But thank you very much. Please send me a link if you ever find it :)
It was from both decades, Sunshine. In fact, if you ever get a chance to listen to an old "CBS Radio Mystery Theater" program on Live365, you might hear one of the old commercials from the mid-Seventies on it.
Does anybody know if there is an old commercial from the Seventies or maybe the early Eighties that has the lovely blonde spokesperson that used to be affectionately known as the Shoprite Lady? Boy, I had a crush on her as a kid back then! I wonder whatever happened to her.
BTW, I believe that's her voice at the end of this Can-Can commercial.

I see well-dressed middle class or perhaps even upper middle class people shopping at Aldi's all the time, along with poorer customers.
