Oh, this brought back memories. The tune instanly felt familiar, I've probably heard it many times. Also ran a BBS in Finland for 3 years back in the 90's. Those were the days...
I still have a PC from this era. Actually, this particular demo is newer than my PC (1991).
The music isn't Ad-Lib specifically, but rather, MIDI played on an FM synthesizer. These simple musical devices were extremely popular on lower end, or older, sound cards, starting with Ad-Lib and Sound Blaster 16, and continuing on even as late as Windows 98 era. Windows XP included a software MIDI synth, and some high end cards had MIDI synths to die for. *Drools over his old SB64*
Need to correct on that: the tune in this intro has been composed in Scream Tracker 3 (FC's first tracker with Yamaha OPL-2 ie. AdLib support) so this is indeed native AdLib arrangement.
You can even look up the original s3m module (starport.s3m or something) on the net and play it / take a look at the instruments in ST3 on your old PC with DOS + SB.
Aint that ADLIB Sounds ? i think they used ADLIB to safe even more bytes for the intro since there been no sampled voices. all work was done by the adlib synthesizer chip on those soundblasters or gravis soundcards. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS!
I was the sysop of Starport, and a member of Future Crew (my nick was and still is Abyss / FC). I remember when PSI, our lead coder, showed me this intro for the first time. It just blew my mind - all of it done in around 6 KBs.
So I started bundling it with all the files that were downloaded from my BBS. Ah, good old times =).
@abyssi3 have you thought about putting the BBS back online? Synchonet BBS software as well as others allow you to host a bbs over telnet nowadays. Just a thought!
Holy crap i remember having this on my old computer back in the days of these demos!!! Awesome memories and thank you for posting this..i been loooking for this stuff for a while
I remember this!! I remember how bad I wanted to dial up into Starport BBS, too... But it was...ya know...in FINLAND whereas I was in the UNITED STATES. XD Ah, good times...

Therefore, I blame you for my international phone call fees, and this adlib beauty being stuck in my head for.. decades.
Thank you all.
