For those under the impression that this reading of Rachmaninov 2 is from 1996, please allow me the opportunity to clarify: this is a recording from the late 60's made for Deutsche Grammophon. Perhaps it was remastered in 1996? At any rate, Richter did not record this piece just before his death. I hope I've been able to impart some clarity in the matter of this timeless, and indeed superlative, rendering of one of the great works of the piano repertory. Cheers.
No way. That wasn't that great. That sounded like Richter having an off day to me. Particularly in the final section, he kept disappointing by failing to sustain the level of energy every time the piano entered.
@TheSwordsweeper The date is wrong. Could be CD release date. I happen to know the date because I own the original LP and had it since the sixties. It says on the cover "Warsaw, April 26-28 1959".
For me, Richter has expressed the dream-like beauty of this concerto, with tone colour, virtuosity, and musicianship merged together in the service of music. I was really moved by this interpretation.
i've always liked PC3 a bit more than PC2, which i've always found kind of hard to "connect" to, until i heard this version by Richter, that is.
when i 1st heard this, i felt like "ah, so this is what PC2 is about, that's why so many people are in love with it." The versions by other pianists such as Cliburn are good too, but they don't give me this feeling, for some reason. i guess it's a personal thing.

@steamednotfried Actually, interesting to mention that the notoriously self-critical Richter named this as one of the few recordings he was proud of.

I have heard this same concerto by over 23 different legendary artists.
And Richter's interpretation is unparalleled.

Was he 81 when he played this? Amazing!

@TheSwordsweeper No, Richter was 44 at the time. (1959)

@vova47 But in part 5 the title says "Richter 1996". Something's off.
