I'm aspiring to learn Mandarin Chinese, but it's difficult to grasp because of its inherent differences compared to the English language.

Prior to this... about 3 years and change. The trick for me was to take courses for credit, which gave me motivation to study regularly. After a while things just begin to take off. I also sing a lot of karaoke, which teaches you a lot of characters and perfects your pronunciation (to some extent). It's a fun language, and if you want to learn it, it's not impossible. The grammar's easier than English for sure!

I speak mandarin and english, you're one of the best, i can barely notice your accent, thats pretty good.

anyways, i just wanted to point out, during your video, where you put your caption before you start playing the trombone "Everybody stop watching, maybe I should stop playing trombone" It is more of a western humor, i had to read it couple times to get it, it didn't really make sense in mandrin lol..

Do you mean all white people in UK and Australia are racists? I hope not! As a Chinese American myself, I have experienced racism one way or the other. Chinese people can be racists too! They make racist remarks in Chinese. They refer white guys as "white spirits."  What do you think if they call you a "yellow spirit!" You can disagree with me. Tomorrow is another day! I speak with a northern-influenced accent because my professors have mainly been from Beijing. I have no particular preference, but I can see how people do. I DO find it easier to understand Northern Mandarin but that's only because that's what I learned; I'm sure if my professors were Taiwanese I would feel differently. I'd rather if things didn't get too political here, please.

Everyone knows the Taiwanese accent isn't the "proper" accent. They misprounce words all the time, like instead of "zhi", they'll say "zi".

Yeah very good. Sometimes your tone 1 is off though. You really need to maintain the flat pitch; don't let it drop. A good strategy is to make it even higher than what you produced. Beijing natives talk that way (though standard Mandarin is not like that).

OMG, I went to the same University and took the same Chinese course as this guy. We had to do a similar speech in class and I remember having the same introduction. That class was awesome, but I really don't remember much of what I "learned". LOL
