Wow, your Chinese is so good. I remember taking Professor Li's class in Winter 2004 and there was this guy that's really good at Chinese, are you him?
Keep up the good work! And just practice with the tones a bit more...
I'm left rather speechless after witnessing your performance. People such as yourself give me inspiration that everyone can find harmony amongst our worldly differences.
May I ask how long have you learned Chinese prior to this event? And what your Also, do you have any pointers that would help in the overall learning experience?
I'm aspiring to learn Mandarin Chinese, but it's difficult to grasp because of its inherent differences compared to the English language.
Prior to this... about 3 years and change. The trick for me was to take courses for credit, which gave me motivation to study regularly. After a while things just begin to take off. I also sing a lot of karaoke, which teaches you a lot of characters and perfects your pronunciation (to some extent). It's a fun language, and if you want to learn it, it's not impossible. The grammar's easier than English for sure!
I speak mandarin and english, you're one of the best, i can barely notice your accent, thats pretty good.
anyways, i just wanted to point out, during your video, where you put your caption before you start playing the trombone "Everybody stop watching, maybe I should stop playing trombone" It is more of a western humor, i had to read it couple times to get it, it didn't really make sense in mandrin lol..
As a multilingual speaker, I don't have problem understanding the humour. I speak mandarin, Cantonese, English, Malay and several other Chinese dialects.
They are much more appreciative of people participating in their culture than most arrogant white people are. Imagine if they all told him to get off stage until he could speak perfect Chinese. That would probably happen the other way around in racist countries like the UK and Australia.
If you're calling all white people arrogant, and their countries racist, that doesn't say much for being more appreciative, does it?
And if you're not calling all white people arrogant, then it's vacuously true that a random group of people would be more appreciative than a group of only arrogant people.
So, thanks for your comments. They speak for themselves.
Do you mean all white people in UK and Australia are racists? I hope not! As a Chinese American myself, I have experienced racism one way or the other. Chinese people can be racists too! They make racist remarks in Chinese. They refer white guys as "white spirits." What do you think if they call you a "yellow spirit!" You can disagree with me. Tomorrow is another day! Life is short and try to enjoy it! Try to open up yourself and you will be fine!
I know. he speaks it better than me. he can quite wipe off the English accent. I can't. I'm a Chinese from Singapore but when i speak Chinese, it's sounds as if i'm white.
i got a singaprean girlfrined, she doesn' sound white at all when she speaks. singaporean ppl r nice but they carrying a huge accent when they speaking their perfect english.
Haha....I was surfing videos of people speaking Chinese and when I saw this, I was like, "Is that Tom?" Then I saw the username and I was like, "OMG, it is!" Hi Tom! It's Josephine! Nice video...Reminds me of the one you sent me of you in China.
I speak with a northern-influenced accent because my professors have mainly been from Beijing. I have no particular preference, but I can see how people do. I DO find it easier to understand Northern Mandarin but that's only because that's what I learned; I'm sure if my professors were Taiwanese I would feel differently. I'd rather if things didn't get too political here, please.
Yeah, quit the fake modesty, you know your Chinese is very impressive....especially in the most recent video, you have virtually no accent...only like two or three wrong tones....like "can jia" you said jia in fourth tone.
you need to go to taiwan, though....you've been brainwashed by the zhonggong, man.
Yeah very good. Sometimes your tone 1 is off though. You really need to maintain the flat pitch; don't let it drop. A good strategy is to make it even higher than what you produced. Beijing natives talk that way (though standard Mandarin is not like that).
OMG, I went to the same University and took the same Chinese course as this guy. We had to do a similar speech in class and I remember having the same introduction. That class was awesome, but I really don't remember much of what I "learned". LOL
WOW!!! I am not chinese but I am sure that is astounding regardless of any acute flaws in pronunciation you may claim to have. Good job, thumbs up? Was there more of the other clip you had in there, randomly inserted?

Everyone knows the Taiwanese accent isn't the "proper" accent. They misprounce words all the time, like instead of "zhi", they'll say "zi".
