The shield's go black for Engine Co., Red for Trucks, Blue for Rescue Co., Yellow for Squad Co., Chiefs have special gold leaf shields that will say either Battalion, deputy, etc. Chief on them. FDNY EMS has Modern style orange helmets.

Yellow- Firefighter all with rockers to designate officers up to captain

Red- Engineers

White-Chiefs from battalion to head chief

Jr Firefighters and non scba have a red stripe down the center and across the back. along with the rockers are not on untill you get firefigher 1 and VRT

They definately vary from station to station, company to company.... In some stations not only do the colors of the helmets vary, but the style of the helmet can also change entirely. My station's scheme on our helmets is White: Officer Black: Firefighter Red: Probie/Junior FF One of our mutual aid station's schemes is White Cairn's helmet: Officer Black Cairn's helmet: Firefighter Yellow Cairn's helmet: Special (EMT, Extrication Tech, Etc.) Red Bullard helmet: Probie/Junior

So Lieutenant "lou" Shea would have a White shield with Red numbers as he is a ladder officer.
