Bill the Butcher is probably my fav antagonist of all time. Daniel Day Lewis did a once in a lifetime performance imo. Nobody else could've done it better. The only other person who plays the bad guy as well imo is Denzel Washington. It's like when they speak, it's not just a conversation, it's poetry. Sounds corny probably, but that's the only way I can describe it.
@tokinblckgie You should see daniel day lewis and gerry conlon in "In the name of the father" you'd love that movie all time classic! Gerry was nominated that year for oscars, Its the kind of movie that makes you feel every emotion possible.
One man stole from Bill, and he cut off his hands. The second man offended him, and he cut out his tongue. The third one rose up against him, and he cut off his head, sticked it on a pike, and raised it up high so all on the streets could see.
An error in the speech is that Bill the Butcher says he killed Priest Vallon fifteen years ago, but since the film takes place in 1862 at this point in the film, it was sixteen years ago. In addition, Bill says earlier in the film that his father died in 1814 during the War of 1812, but in this speech he says that he's 47 years old. 1862-47 is 1815, so unless Bill was conceived in 1814 before his father's death, that's an error.
@Sisyphus27 I wouldn't really call Bill saying he killed Priest Vallon fifteen years ago as opposed to sixteen years ago an "error". I mean if something had happened to you twenty days ago, you'd probably just say it happened three weeks ago; people tend to round numbers. And as for Bill being 47, I think that still makes sense. After all, Bill could've been conceived a week or so before his dad's death, and by the time nine months had passed it could've been 1815.
WHEN DANIEL DAY LEWIS IS INVOLVED IN A BIG FILM PLAYING A BIG ROLE... JUST SAVE EVERYBODY THE TIME AND EMBARRASSMENT AND GIVE HIM THE OSCAR.... WHY BUILD UP FAKE TENSION AND COMPETITION ??? THE FACT THAT BRODY TOOK THE OSCAR THIS YEAR WAS OUTRAGEOUS AND PURELY A POLITICAL STUNT.... DDL IS GOD !
This is a great scene, but what the fuck? You get better audio from a Black Eyed Peas concert. Bill should've walked up to the audio man and bashed his head in like he did Amsterdam in a later scene.

@MrBelloq DDL got 2 oscars as a compensation for losing this one? first, if it was compensation, that implies that he deserved it the first time around. second, the first of the two oscars was won prior to this film, so that contradicts your argument. just wondering, but have u noticed that brody's career completely sank after THE PIANIST? it indicates that he isn't a great actor. he just happened to be cast in a role that was a surefire front-runner for the oscar.
@f1tevaldo, many "murderers" have gotten oscars.denzel washington is one of them and it's because he's black that he got the oscar for it.and halle berry; african american female got an Oscar for acting like a whore in film i cannot recall the title of.so are you saying that these Jews are being.. racist? perhaps..
@lordangral666 The Academy should have given Denzel the Oscar a long time ago (Malcolm X), just like they shold have given an Oscar to Scorsese a long time ago for just about every one of his movies. And Denzel showed tremendous versatility in his role of the bad guy in 'Training Day' so get off that just because he's black shit. Then again, to hell with it, you're already decided on it. Peace to you, anyway. Daniel Day Lewis did a hell of a job in this role, down with Adrien Brody!!

@witness124 funny how u posted this comment write before colin firth won best actor over 3 americans and a spaniard. either the academy heeded your indignation, or you're dead wrong.
My family is from Massachusetts. I have some uncles who have rough pasts to say the least and are now older and large with tattoos and moustaches much like DDL's in this movie. The way he speaks as Bill here along with the accent itself is spot on. This guy is an insanely good actor. This man definitely does a lot and goes through a lot psychologically for his job.
The most horrifying and brutal movie I have ever seen. I went to the cinema with my son. We left after 45 minutes because I was going to vommit. I do not know why on earth such insane brutality must be shown to people. Great acting anyway. Thoese Americans can play like hell. It ist in their venes. Nevertheless this movie was nothing but a great butchery.
@gillan5 This savagery you refer to was a central point in this movie. Too often, when American's look back at the Civil War era, it is viewed through the prism of the East being the cradle of American civilization, whereas the American frontier and the battle fronts of the war were the centers of brutality. Scorsese showed us that men that walked the streets in top and tails would slit your throat as soon as shake your hand. Sometimes a spray of blood says more than the most eloquent speech.
Now THIS is a villian by it's truest form. And the man was anything but a villian personally and just an impassioned soul making him even more a villian.

@TheAK4722 Did you not hear what Mr. Lewis just said? Few, he'll cut off your head and raise it high, of course no one is gonna press the dislike button after that! :)
Colin Farrell should have played Amsterdam. I think he would be better at showing all the built up anger that Amsterdam had for Bill. Leo just looked vacant most of the time
@SeppukuDoll DiCaprio has gotten better. This was about the first role where he was trying to get away from the pretty boy persona that had defined his career up to that point. In this movie I thought he struggled with that transition. Also this kind of street tough really isn't his thing. Look at his performance in The Departed. He plays someone who is pretty tough but has to pretend to be much more brutal and is out of his depth. That plays more to his strengths.
This movie is a great example of how the "bad" guy can steal the show. Leo was great in this but Lewis really took this - I was rooting for Bill the Butcher
Diaz sucked. I wish Marty had used Winona Ryder for Jenny - she's so cute and could have blamed pickpocketing on method acting. Then we'd have an awesome trilogy of Day-Lewis and Ryder playing every variation of man/woman imaginable.
This film was a masterpiece in casting, (if you will, a "cast"erpiece). Casting Daniel Day-Lewis for that part was genius. Liam Neeson and Leo DiCaprio are another two of the finest actors this generation has seen, and casting Cameron Diaz in a non-comedy role was a very clever idea!
@deodorant93 Shit film? are u kidding me? how did u not like this...its a lil crazy at times but it was meant to be like that. kinda like moulin rouge.
HELL of a scene. Bill was paying a magnificent tribute to Amsterdam's father. It seemed...almost tragic Am. didn't confess his genealogy to Bill, and a repentance could have occured. Not for great movie making, I suppose, but Bill showed great honor, there.
i usually don't get scared of actors playing the roles of villains, but DDL scared the fuck out of me playing Bill The Butcher, thats how good of an actor DDL is.
everytime this movie comes on tv, the only reason i watch it is because of this part and ever scene DDL is in ..i thought leonardo dicapeio was bad in this.. if day-lewis wasnt in this movie, this movie would suck
This scene is one of the best acted scenes in the history of cinema. I never doubted for a second that all of what he said never happened. You just listen to him and believe everything he says cos he's such a great actor. Whenever he plays a character it's like he's lived their life all his life. Daniel Day Lewis just vanishes into thin air and all you see is his new character
@bjbjbzz Wow. I didn't even think about this. I loved this movie, but after reading your post, I realized I just love Daniel Day Lewis and his character in the movie.
@brackenbus22 Are you kidding me? Dicaprio was good, but he wasn't even close to the level Daniel Day Lewis. Dicaprio was seriously nothing special in this compared to the performance given by Lewis.
...I should also note that Dicaprio does a fantastic job in this film and I'm not sure he ever gets the credit that he deserves for his progression as an actor...
Apparently DDL lives the character, then improvises most of his dialogue around the original script outlines. Absolute genius. And Bill the Butcher is one of the most truly chilling characters ever portrayed on film.
@saantinoo Sure he did, but I seriously doubt he'd take on that role. I don't think many would be keen on it after what Heath Ledger did with it. I really don't think Chris Nolan is going to recast the Joker as much as I'd like to see him recast it and as much as I think DDL would be great for it.
@OlderG0ds Actually Daniel Day Lewis has Irish Citizenship. He holds a dual citizenship (Irish and british) so one could argue that he is Irish by his own choice.
Not to enter into this argument, but DDL is not really that Irish. His mom was English (of Jewish eastern european background). His dad was born in Ireland but raised in england. DDL was born and raised in england and lived there until he was in his 30's...I only tell you this because to me his performances in My Left Foot and In the Name of the father are even more impressive because he was not working-class, Irish, and Catholic like his characters were.
His smile in this film is somehow unique to me-it's very genuine, and not really what one would expect I feel. Of course what makes his performance so great is how genuine it all is, but I felt that worth mentioning. Such a fantastic performance.
@f1tevaldo DDL didn't win the oscar for this performance cuz:
1. he was up against a guy who played a talented, suffering jew in the holocaust (adrien brody).
2. hollywood is run by jews. (btw, this isn't a racist remark, it's a fact.)
hollywood was probably worried about awarding the highest honor to the role of a gangster/murderer, when they also had a historically real holocaust victim up against him.
that said... DDL not receiving the oscar for this was the biggest joke of oscar history.
@prt61370 what does DDL's mother being a jew have to do with anything i said? my comment wasn't meant to convey any anger toward jews. i was just stating the fact that when it comes to holocaust movies, hollywood will always favor them at the oscars.
@ghoststar Your comments regarding 'Jews run hollywood therefore resulting in daniel day lewis not winning Oscar' is idiotic and illogical.
I'm sure everyone will agree schindlers list is the biggest and best holocaust film. May I also add directed and produced by Steven Spielberg.
With such a Jewish influence; why did liam nelson and ralph fiennes loose best actor and supporting to Philadelphia actors tom hanks and denzel washington?
@snessy444 you're attacking a straw man. i never said "jews run hollywood, therefore all holocaust movies win oscars." i said that because DDL portrayed a historical villain, and brody a historical holocaust survivor, it influenced the decision. and as for your statement, "I'm sure everyone will agree Schindler's List is the best holocaust film," HAHA. to make such a bold assumption so nonchalantly is absurd and only serves to show what u consider LOGIC.
@snessy444 and to reiterate, brody was up against a murdering villain. neeson and fiennes were up against hanks and washington, two moral men fighting against corporate infringement of individual rights, let alone the right of an AIDS infected individual. also keep in mind that this was in the early 90's when the AIDS ravaged late 80's was still fresh in the public's mind. if hanks had played a murdering bigot, i'm sure he would've lost the oscar.
@ghoststar Adrian Brody did a fantastic job in Pianist and the Pianist was a better movie than Gangs of New York. Now DDL did a great job in this film and his performance was equal to Adrians but the Pianist was just a better film. DDL has been nominated for 4 oscars and has one 2 so obviously the Jews that run Hollywood like him.
@IronManOfficialguy u didn't read my post very well. i NEVER said hollywood dislikes DDL. i said he didnt win because he played a murdering bigot and was up against the portrayal of a holocaust victim. and to say THE PIANIST was a better film is a matter of taste (which i wholeheartedly disagree with), and irrelevant, since we r talking about the best actor category, not film. also, brody's character required little effort (hunger and dejectedness) compared to the many facets of bill the butcher
@ghoststar Ok so lets forget all the opinion shit then. You thought DDL had the better performance thats fine, and theres no point in arguing it with you. But you think they awarded Brody rather then DDL because it was a holocaust related role and they didnt want the controversy or they were biased for some reason. Well lets rewind to the 66th academy awards then. Up for best actors are Liam Neeson for Shindlers list (which is arguably the most famous holocaust film ever) Continued.
@ghoststar And Tom Hanks for Philadelphia in which he played a Gay Man with Aids which was a HIGHLY Controversial topic at the time. They gave the oscar to Hanks even though Oscar Shindler list was a Holocaust role. So thats why I think your statement is bull. That and you're using of gross generalizations like Hollywood is ran by jews who are all biased.
@IronManOfficialguy please read all the comments i left prior to making your weak arguments. i addressed this issue already in my response to snessy444. AIDS was a very high profile issue then, but not in the way you're stating it. by the early 90's, those infected with AIDS were looked upon as victims, and no longer as the guilty deserving such horror. hanks played a suffering hero. bill the butcher was a murdering bigot who touted the same sort of fascism as hitler. how can u compare the two?
@IronManOfficialguy read up on AIDS history before u speak. i wrote three papers on the issue, so i feel i have a firmer basis than u. also, please for the love of god, stop misinterpreting my arguments. i never said jews will award any actor in a holocaust film. i said because DDL played a murdering bigot, hollywood was afraid of offending the jews by awarding the butcher the oscar over a real-life holocaust survivor. there were even articles about this. look it up man. educate yourself a bit.
@ghoststar that is so true and agreed it isnt at all racist its a fact along with the fact edward norton was robbed of an award for american history x!!
@ghoststar I also think that adrian brody being that young gave him an advantage. Cuz that oscar made him the youngest oscar winner of all time. So if you think about it, day lewis only has two oscars becuase the stupid fucking academy wanted to break a record. Talk about gettin screwed!!!
@ghoststar Can I start listing all the non-Jews that have won Academy Awards over the years and chalk it up to the Jewish actors of those years being robbed because the Academy is full of Nazi Jew haters? No? Then you better stop talking like a fucking moron too.
@kweechy i don't know where to begin with your comment. u completely misconstrued my argument, u make an absurd argument to prove mine false, and u r irrationally angry. what does non-jews winning oscars have ANYTHING to do with what i wrote? i truly hope this is the last time i have to make this clarification: I NEVER SAID JEWS RUN HOLLYWOOD, THEREFORE JEWS ALWAYS WIN OSCARS. every day i am surprised and disturbed by the rampant idiocy on youtube.
@ghoststar Direct quotes from you, I didn't even have to pull these out of context to make you look like the bigot you are:
"DDL didn't win the oscar for this performance cuz: he was up against a guy who played a talented, suffering jew in the holocaust." "hollywood is run by jews."
You said DDL was robbed because someone portrayed a Jew in a movie that year. Personally, Brody played what felt to me a more real character, DDL was more a characateur. That's why he lost. Not cause he wasnt a Jew
@kweechy u can take anyone's words out of context to make them appear to be a bigot. what u just did is the oldest trick in dirty politics (and certainly not a very intelligent one). call me a bigot if that works for u. but u have just proven (once again) your inferior intellect. i have nothing against jews. but if u believe race and politics aren't involved in absolutely every decision made by a committee, then u portray the exact sort of ignorance desired by the powers that be.
@ghoststar Adrien Brody was brilliant in The Pianist, not to say that he was better than DDL's performance, but the fact he won definitely was not a joke. Have you ever seen The Pianist?
@Tehyamz yes, i've seen it. brody acted well, but he really only portrayed three very similar emotions in that movie: despondency, fear, and desperation. of course i understand this is only
Bill the Butcher is one of the greatest film characters of all time. Daniel Day Lewis owns this movie :)

Colin Farrell should have played Amsterdam. I think he would be better at showing all the built up anger that Amsterdam had for Bill. Leo just looked vacant most of the time
Stormsoldier7 1 year ago
@Stormsoldier7 I disagree with that... I don't know why, but nowadays I find DiCaprio a pretty good actor.
SeppukuDoll 1 year ago

Messylin 1 year ago 2
This film was a masterpiece in casting, (if you will, a "cast"erpiece). Casting Daniel Day-Lewis for that part was genius. Liam Neeson and Leo DiCaprio are another two of the finest actors this generation has seen, and casting Cameron Diaz in a non-comedy role was a very clever idea!

HELL of a scene. Bill was paying a magnificent tribute to Amsterdam's father. It seemed...almost tragic Am. didn't confess his genealogy to Bill, and a repentance could have occured. Not for great movie making, I suppose, but Bill showed great honor, there.

Yea Day-Lewis' accent sounds more Irish than Leonardo lol.
But maybe they didn't have him do a thick Irish accent since his character wasn't like fresh off the boat or anything.

Maybe to you, but to an American Leonardo's character has the stereotypical southern Irish accent, and Bill the Butcher sounds like a New Yorker.

@brackenbus22 Dicaprio really started doing some amazing method stuff after working with Daniel. i.e.) Blood Diamond. The Deaparted etc..
reece32100 10 months ago
@brackenbus22 Are you kidding me? Dicaprio was good, but he wasn't even close to the level Daniel Day Lewis. Dicaprio was seriously nothing special in this compared to the performance given by Lewis.
bjbjbzz 10 months ago
@bjbjbzz they were both really good, just an unreal movie all together, i just watched it again for like the 3rd time in a row :)

I still think he should have won an academy award for this epic performance. The best actor today imo...

Do screenwriters delibirately write roles for Daniel Day-Lewis? He always seems to have incredible speeches in quite a few of his films... Just me?
vivalasagne9 1 year ago
Apparently DDL lives the character, then improvises most of his dialogue around the original script outlines. Absolute genius. And Bill the Butcher is one of the most truly chilling characters ever portrayed on film.

saantinoo 1 year ago
@saantinoo Sure he did, but I seriously doubt he'd take on that role. I don't think many would be keen on it after what Heath Ledger did with it. I really don't think Chris Nolan is going to recast the Joker as much as I'd like to see him recast it and as much as I think DDL would be great for it.

They got it right with Priest Vallen though, cause Neeson is Irish lol
OlderG0ds 1 year ago
@OlderG0ds Actually Daniel Day Lewis has Irish Citizenship. He holds a dual citizenship (Irish and british) so one could argue that he is Irish by his own choice.
NiamhyDepp 1 year ago
@NiamhyDepp
Turns out DDL's father was Irish born so that explains the citizenship and I guess he is part Irish then

easynowww 1 year ago

ay fuck you cheese dick i dont care what kind of irish
OlderG0ds 1 year ago
@OlderG0ds

Well, he's got two oscars, now. He's not exactly hurting.
Lassann 2 years ago 3
@f1tevaldo the movie had a bit of fictional feel to it... movies like that dotn really win oscars but in this movie he was amazing...
XXAlbaneziXX 1 year ago
@f1tevaldo DDL didn't win the oscar for this performance cuz:
1. he was up against a guy who played a talented, suffering jew in the holocaust (adrien brody).
2. hollywood is run by jews. (btw, this isn't a racist remark, it's a fact.)
hollywood was probably worried about awarding the highest honor to the role of a gangster/murderer, when they also had a historically real holocaust victim up against him.
that said... DDL not receiving the oscar for this was the biggest joke of oscar history.
ghoststar 1 year ago 53
@ghoststar very true. any film that has something to do with the holocaust always winds up winning some awards at the oscars.
haterssuck288 1 year ago
@haterssuck288 yaeh that wimpy ass piano player got the nod over DDL WTF ??? Hollywoods abunch of cocksuckers not very honerable men!!!
1986billyk 1 year ago
@ghoststar I agree with you. But then a gain Daniel day Lewis mother was a jew.
prt61370 1 year ago
@prt61370 what does DDL's mother being a jew have to do with anything i said? my comment wasn't meant to convey any anger toward jews. i was just stating the fact that when it comes to holocaust movies, hollywood will always favor them at the oscars.
ghoststar 1 year ago
@ghoststar Your comments regarding 'Jews run hollywood therefore resulting in daniel day lewis not winning Oscar' is idiotic and illogical.
I'm sure everyone will agree schindlers list is the biggest and best holocaust film. May I also add directed and produced by Steven Spielberg.
With such a Jewish influence; why did liam nelson and ralph fiennes loose best actor and supporting to Philadelphia actors tom hanks and denzel washington?
snessy444 11 months ago
@snessy444 you're attacking a straw man. i never said "jews run hollywood, therefore all holocaust movies win oscars." i said that because DDL portrayed a historical villain, and brody a historical holocaust survivor, it influenced the decision. and as for your statement, "I'm sure everyone will agree Schindler's List is the best holocaust film," HAHA. to make such a bold assumption so nonchalantly is absurd and only serves to show what u consider LOGIC.
ghoststar 11 months ago
@snessy444 and to reiterate, brody was up against a murdering villain. neeson and fiennes were up against hanks and washington, two moral men fighting against corporate infringement of individual rights, let alone the right of an AIDS infected individual. also keep in mind that this was in the early 90's when the AIDS ravaged late 80's was still fresh in the public's mind. if hanks had played a murdering bigot, i'm sure he would've lost the oscar.
ghoststar 11 months ago
@ghoststar i agree with you
dasdasist 11 months ago
@ghoststar Adrian Brody did a fantastic job in Pianist and the Pianist was a better movie than Gangs of New York. Now DDL did a great job in this film and his performance was equal to Adrians but the Pianist was just a better film. DDL has been nominated for 4 oscars and has one 2 so obviously the Jews that run Hollywood like him.
IronManOfficialguy 11 months ago
@IronManOfficialguy u didn't read my post very well. i NEVER said hollywood dislikes DDL. i said he didnt win because he played a murdering bigot and was up against the portrayal of a holocaust victim. and to say THE PIANIST was a better film is a matter of taste (which i wholeheartedly disagree with), and irrelevant, since we r talking about the best actor category, not film. also, brody's character required little effort (hunger and dejectedness) compared to the many facets of bill the butcher
ghoststar 11 months ago
@ghoststar Ok so lets forget all the opinion shit then. You thought DDL had the better performance thats fine, and theres no point in arguing it with you. But you think they awarded Brody rather then DDL because it was a holocaust related role and they didnt want the controversy or they were biased for some reason. Well lets rewind to the 66th academy awards then. Up for best actors are Liam Neeson for Shindlers list (which is arguably the most famous holocaust film ever) Continued.
IronManOfficialguy 11 months ago
@ghoststar And Tom Hanks for Philadelphia in which he played a Gay Man with Aids which was a HIGHLY Controversial topic at the time. They gave the oscar to Hanks even though Oscar Shindler list was a Holocaust role. So thats why I think your statement is bull. That and you're using of gross generalizations like Hollywood is ran by jews who are all biased.
IronManOfficialguy 11 months ago
@IronManOfficialguy please read all the comments i left prior to making your weak arguments. i addressed this issue already in my response to snessy444. AIDS was a very high profile issue then, but not in the way you're stating it. by the early 90's, those infected with AIDS were looked upon as victims, and no longer as the guilty deserving such horror. hanks played a suffering hero. bill the butcher was a murdering bigot who touted the same sort of fascism as hitler. how can u compare the two?
ghoststar 10 months ago
@IronManOfficialguy read up on AIDS history before u speak. i wrote three papers on the issue, so i feel i have a firmer basis than u. also, please for the love of god, stop misinterpreting my arguments. i never said jews will award any actor in a holocaust film. i said because DDL played a murdering bigot, hollywood was afraid of offending the jews by awarding the butcher the oscar over a real-life holocaust survivor. there were even articles about this. look it up man. educate yourself a bit.
ghoststar 10 months ago
@ghoststar One of the many mistakes. It gets worse every year.
reece32100 10 months ago
@ghoststar that is so true and agreed it isnt at all racist its a fact along with the fact edward norton was robbed of an award for american history x!!
lukeslonergan 10 months ago
@ghoststar I also think that adrian brody being that young gave him an advantage. Cuz that oscar made him the youngest oscar winner of all time. So if you think about it, day lewis only has two oscars becuase the stupid fucking academy wanted to break a record. Talk about gettin screwed!!!
1992gabe 10 months ago
@ghoststar Can I start listing all the non-Jews that have won Academy Awards over the years and chalk it up to the Jewish actors of those years being robbed because the Academy is full of Nazi Jew haters? No? Then you better stop talking like a fucking moron too.
kweechy 10 months ago
@kweechy i don't know where to begin with your comment. u completely misconstrued my argument, u make an absurd argument to prove mine false, and u r irrationally angry. what does non-jews winning oscars have ANYTHING to do with what i wrote? i truly hope this is the last time i have to make this clarification: I NEVER SAID JEWS RUN HOLLYWOOD, THEREFORE JEWS ALWAYS WIN OSCARS. every day i am surprised and disturbed by the rampant idiocy on youtube.
ghoststar 10 months ago
@ghoststar Direct quotes from you, I didn't even have to pull these out of context to make you look like the bigot you are:
"DDL didn't win the oscar for this performance cuz: he was up against a guy who played a talented, suffering jew in the holocaust." "hollywood is run by jews."
You said DDL was robbed because someone portrayed a Jew in a movie that year. Personally, Brody played what felt to me a more real character, DDL was more a characateur. That's why he lost. Not cause he wasnt a Jew
kweechy 10 months ago
@kweechy u can take anyone's words out of context to make them appear to be a bigot. what u just did is the oldest trick in dirty politics (and certainly not a very intelligent one). call me a bigot if that works for u. but u have just proven (once again) your inferior intellect. i have nothing against jews. but if u believe race and politics aren't involved in absolutely every decision made by a committee, then u portray the exact sort of ignorance desired by the powers that be.
ghoststar 10 months ago
@ghoststar Adrien Brody was brilliant in The Pianist, not to say that he was better than DDL's performance, but the fact he won definitely was not a joke. Have you ever seen The Pianist?
Tehyamz 10 months ago
@Tehyamz yes, i've seen it. brody acted well, but he really only portrayed three very similar emotions in that movie: despondency, fear, and desperation. of course i understand this is only
