I believe that the lyricism of The Civil Wars' "Poison & Wine" carries a much greater emotional weight as they are exploring the paradoxical nature of relationships in their entirety, and not merely the good aspects of one relationship. Because "Poison & Wine" examines a relationship's duality, it is a song to which more people can easily relate - making it more dynamic and sincere. Lionel Richie might capture your singular emotions, but he does not

That sounds reasonable. Your first comment did imply an awful lot of negative things about todays music. @elczrilo For Godsakes, I never said I was righteous or that I only listen to Lionel Richie. I didn't mean to imply that ALL music is raunchy - I'm just saying that the Powers that Be in music and entertainment seem to think that you need to be tough and vulgar and sexual and have an attitude to make anything relevant or worthwhile. (The ATTITUDES of the performers). Like some people would call this "cheesy" music just because it isn't the above qualities. THAT'S what I mean.

That sounds reasonable. Your first comment did imply an awful lot of negative things about todays music. Your second comment is closer to the truth, lots of mainstream music does seem to fit into that mold. But I still don't think todays standards would consider this cheesy, I've been to the land of cheesy and come back alive. This is not cheesy although I don't like this song, I do much prefer "easy".
Also there is lots of great music still being made that you'd enjoy :)

@sshelget I agree, Lionel's songs are sung and written so romantically, deep from the heart. Perhaps it is not safe to many to wear there hearts on their sleeves. Many would but those few bullyish people would embarass them to death. Or people might just think others are getting "too" "mushy". In any case, this song is romantic!

@sshelget Hi I agree with you I tell my son we had music with no swearing in it and any slight sexual content was banned, he couldn't belivee it until I played my records and he saw what I was meaning, He loves my music because there is so much variety and its all played with real instruments he's just 18. We need to teach our kids the value of real music and not what is played today.x

@midgelr22 I guess it's true that the older generation needs to teach or show the younger generation what it used to be like because they don't know any different - for example, it's not like my niece and nephew automatically knew who Elvis Presley or the Beatles are or about the 70s music or 80s music. (Or what a record player was, ha ha!) Kids nowadays are only shown the raunchy stuff on TV - and they have no idea where music came from or how it used to be.

@sshelget I love this song, but i also love new music even if its "hip", "in", "tough" and "vulgar". You dont need to label music with your thoughts just because you are too old to understand it. Some people can appreciate music from all periods. Learn from the young people... i have.

A beautiful love song remains just that , despite the years or indeed silly comments made by others who clearly have no idea what love and romance is about. We can only feel sorry for them and hope that someday, when they are grown up, they will love someone enough to understand!

This song reminds me of my parents who were both born in 1925. Went through school together from kindergarten through high school and then were "seperated" by W.W.II They remet at a post office on an army base in Texas in the late '40s. They married in 1950 , mother died in 1999, Dad died in 2002. She was to him "THREE TIMES A LADY" This is a tribute to my parents.
