@WingKrest It's probably the number one most basic sweep from guard (that or hip bump) that people learn very early on. Because everyone knows it, it can often be difficult to get on someone without setting up feints and distractions.
the scissor move is taufht in krav maga-it is a good defensive movement-this particular vidio shows a lot of good movements-we should learn some of them to put in our tool box for reference- oldsgtmajusmc
i have fought in two ufc's 68 and 73, i own my own mma gym in orange county california, every time i visit mr. clingerman, he gets a tap out of me atleast once... i think, no no! there was that one time when he had an injured knee and we didn't roll. this guy is the real deal for sure, find out if you don't believe. and no james i am not kissn' your butt, credit is due sir.
I'm no jiujitsu master, but I can tell you he's doing the sweep incorrectly. The knee does NOT go across the belt line. If the guy in the blue gi just puts his weight down on that leg, he's trapped the guy in the black gi and can pass to half guard.
@johnblaster I was taught/ picked up from somewhere to always keep the knee at the solar plexus. It feels safer and seems to set up the triangle/wing sweep/grip breaking better, but this is just a different way of accomplishing the same thing with very similar results. When he does the actual sweep, if you look close the knee is at about the nipple level. I think it's just an issue of showing the technique slow.
admittedly i am a white belt but ive been going for quite some time now and just never gone to a grading but the higher grades on my club use it all the time against not just me but against blue and purple belts too
obsolete? i love this sweep. and you can do it no gi as well...you just have to get creative in how you pull their weight towards you when you "scissor" your legs.
it IS an obsolete move, but only because most people no longer use it. It and butterfly sweep are still my two favorite sweeps, and 2 of my favorite moves, mainly because almost nobody expects them
I'm a lowly blue belt in BJJ, but I get people with scissor sweeps quite often. It's silly to call this move "obsolete." People should always remember to keep an open mind.
Nice armbar transition

"The scissor sweep is considered by some to be an obsolete move."
Why do people think this??

@RASHskins
Ah yeah, so if everyone knows it, they're gonna know the countermeasures before you even pull it off. Makes plenty sense, cheers

@johnblaster
He actualy addresses that concern at the 53 second mark. There is also the option of kicking out the knee
Its a good list of variations

great vid. good information on my favorite sweep.

great sweep!
I find it funny when white, blues and even purples refer to this sweep as "obsolete" or jsut a beginners sweep
NOT AT ALL!
I know several black-belts that use this sweep ALL THE TIME! Their bread and butter sweep!
Not a beginner or obsolete sweep at all
you just have to know how to use it properly!
again, great video!

Awesome video. I use the scissor sweep just to get reactions kind of the same way you set up throws in Judo with ashi waza.
Im giving 5 stars not only for the content but for using the word congruent in the description!

I never get people with this, they always move in when I hip escape. I'll have to try this one though, we wern't taught to move out of the way.
Cheers

i dont think its a very good sweep, not terrible, just not that good. There's better options from open guard.

good video. good details and thorough explanation. I don't consider this obsolete at all and I've used it from white to purple.

haha i used this sweep like a million times. just need to see if there are people on youtube that know it :)
ya this is my favorite sweep with or without gi pants. but, like all moves its never guaranteed

How do people consider the sweep obsolete? It is not always easy or appropriate, however, there are situations where it is the best technique to use.
